Theme Park Reopening Tips

The theme parks of Central Florida are once again open and welcoming guests, and while your next visit will be different here are some tips to make the most of your time in the parks.

Give Yourself Extra Time

Theme Park Reopening Tips

I am a fan of arriving early to help cut down on any anxiety around sticking to a schedule, however, now giving yourself extra time is essential as security and temperature check lines can get long.

Security and temperature check areas tend to open before the park, and I try to arrive at least 30 minutes before park opening to make sure the process does not affect my schedule for the day.

Don’t Forget Your Face Covering

Theme Park Reopening Tips SeaWorld Orlando Reopening June 11 2020

All of the Central Florida theme parks are requiring guests over the age of two to wear a face covering while they are in the parks and the specific requirements vary by park.

Guidelines to consider when choosing a face coverings include:

  • Face covering must fit snugly against the sides of your face,
  • Both your nose and mouth must be protected by the face covering,
  • Face coverings should be made of a breathable material, and
  • Face covering should be secured with ties or ear loops.

Review Park Information

Theme Park Reopening Tips

Before you choose a park to attend, take a moment to visit the theme park’s official website to review ticket availability, reservation requirements, modified attraction and show lists, and operations guidelines.

Each park is managing each of these aspects differently, and it will definitely make your day smoother if you are familiar with them.

A good rule of thumb when setting expectations for your day is to remember that SeaWorld Orlando and the Walt Disney World Resort are requiring theme park reservations to attend, that fireworks and parades are temporarily suspended, and that character meet and greets are held from afar in a group setting.

Meal Planning

Theme Park Reopening Tips

With the greatly reduced capacity of full-service restaurants in the theme parks and quick service restaurants operating like casual dining restaurants with reserved seating, you will want to make sure that you schedule extra time in your schedule for a meal.

Don’t Overpack

Theme Park Reopening Tips Walt Disney World Reopening Theme Park Essentials

While you might be tempted to bring extra items with you to the theme parks, keep in mind that some theme parks, like the Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld Orlando, are still requiring bags to be put in lockers before you enter most attraction queues.

These lockers are not very large, and if your items do not fit in the complimentary lockers you will be required to purchase a larger locker for your items.

Prepare to Combat the Heat

Theme Park Reopening Tips Walt Disney World Reopening Theme Park Essentials

Wearing a mask while you are outside can make things feel hotter than expected, and to help with this I bring a battery operated fan that I’m able to pop on when I need an extra boost of cold air to help me feel more comfortable.

Download Official Theme Park Apps Before Arrival

Theme Park Reopening Tips Pandora the World of Avatar Before You Go -

The theme parks have made efforts to reduce their points of contact, and one way they have done this is by integrating actions into their official apps that can be downloaded for free.

I suggest downloading the theme park’s official app before you arrive to help ensure that your park entry and cashless payment processes take as little time as possible.

Summerfest 2020 at the Gaylord Palms Resort

DISCLOSURE: I was invited by the Gaylord Palms Resort to stay at the resort with my family to experience SummerFest. All opinions are completely my own.

The Gaylord Palms Resort has always been a special place for my family, and this summer the resort is welcoming back guests in a big way with their Summerfest offerings!

Safety is Key

Summerfest at the Gaylord Palms 2020 -

Guests at the Gaylord Palms will find that Marriott has implemented a new Travel with Confidence Program that welcomes back guests with enhanced cleaning procedures, safety and social distancing reminders throughout the resort, and extra in-room amenities.

Discovering fun around the Resort

Summerfest at the Gaylord Palms 2020 -

A staple of celebrations at the Gaylord Palms Resort has been their scavenger hunts, and the Florida Scavenger Hunt is not for the faint of heart.

We are looking for the best and brightest Florida Explorers to pass on the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully explore the interesting, incredible, and sometimes treacherous state of Florida. Your journey begins inside the 4.5-acre atrium, filled to the brim with Flora (plant-life) and Fauna (animal-life) from all over the state. To succeed in becoming a real-life Florida explorer, you will need to navigate through the atrium and learn about unique plants, animals, and historical landmarks. Good Luck!

The Florida Scavenger Hunt, $9.99 plus tax at the Pool Towel Hut, is available for guests to do at their leisure, but don’t be fooled…this one isn’t a walk in the atrium! (See what I did there…)

Illuminated Evenings

Summerfest at the Gaylord Palms 2020 -

Every evening at 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm the St. Augustine Atrium lights up with a celebration of all things ‘Florida’ in a way you’ve never seen before!!!

This multisensory celebration of the Sunshine State will excite and amaze with an epic musical score set to millions of choreographed lights. Take a journey from the swamplands to the beach, and enjoy all Florida has to offer!

While I could have watched the show from my balcony (super cool, right?), I opted for a private viewing from underneath in the atrium.

Summerfest at the Gaylord Palms 2020 -

Either way, you can’t go wrong!!!

Fun in the Sun

Summerfest at the Gaylord Palms 2020 -

You can’t celebrate something like Summerfest without a trip to the Cypress Springs Waterpark!

While the pools, slides, and kiddie play area are amazing, this summer you can experience a fab pool party with DJ Sunny on Fridays and Saturdays.

ALSO, they now have reserved seating that takes the hassle out of finding a great seat at the pool.

Summerfest at the Gaylord Palms 2020 -

Trust me, once you get there no one will want to leave!!!

Summerfest at the Gaylord Palms 2020 -

These are just a few of the Summerfest offerings that my family enjoyed during our stay at the Gaylord Palms Resort, but there are so many more ways you can explore this celebration!

And on top of all of these things, you can take advantage of some AMAZING deals for your vacation on their official website.

We all agree that Summerfest is definitely a 10/10 experience!!!

Rise of the Resistance Virtual Queue Update

Rise of the Resistance star wars galaxy's edge
Joshua Sudock/Disney Parks

When Disney’s Hollywood Studios reopens on July 15, guests with Disney Park Pass reservations will be using the virtual queue to experience Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.

If you’ve joined the Resistance before, you will want to note a few changes to the process beginning July 15.

Most importantly – as availability allows – guests will have an opportunity at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. or 4 p.m. to request to join the virtual queue which is AMAZING news because this means there is no need to arrive early to the park to check the virtual queue.

CAN I GET A HALLELUJAH???

Whether it’s your first trip to Batuu or you have joined the fight against the First Order before, there are a few important details to know before you arrive:

  • First, make sure you have the My Disney Experience app installed on your phone before you arrive at the park.
  • Once you enter Disney’s Hollywood Studios, log in to your account at one of the distribution times (10 a.m., 1 p.m. or 4 p.m.).
  • Once you have logged in, select “Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Virtual Queue” on the home screen. You will be able to view the current status and next steps for joining the virtual queue.
  • The app will indicate when there is no availability for a specific distribution time, but make sure you read your distribution time carefully as some guests may join backup groups.
  • As long as your My Disney Experience account is linked to park tickets for you and the others in your group, you can enroll everyone in the virtual queue at the same time.
  • In order to give as many guests as possible the opportunity to join the Resistance, each guest can enter the virtual queue no more than once per day.
  • Make sure push notifications are turned on for My Disney Experience so you will be alerted if your group is called to return.
  • You’ll have up to an hour from the time of the alert to go to the entrance of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.
  • Please note that joining the virtual queue does not guarantee the ability to experience Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.

If you have any questions or need assistance with joining the virtual queue, cast members at Guest Experience Team locations throughout the park are available to assist. While you wait for your virtual queue group to be called, you can enjoy other experiences at Disney’s Hollywood Studios including our newest addition, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.

For other attractions at the Walt Disney World Resort, plan to use the regular standby queues and maintain physical distancing.

Walt Disney World Reopening: Theme Park Essentials

Walt Disney World Reopening Theme Park Essentials

With Walt Disney World reopening today for an Annual Passholder Preview and this weekend for guests, I thought that it would be a good chance to share the theme park essentials I take to the parks in our new normal.

Walt Disney World Reopening: Theme Park Essentials

Walt Disney World Reopening Theme Park Essentials
Hand Sanitizer

While you can find hand sanitizer and hand washing stations throughout the parks, I really like having my own hand sanitizer with me because it gives me the opportunity to go ahead and use a little as soon as I get on or as soon as I get off of an attraction.

Walt Disney World Reopening Theme Park Essentials
Battery Operated Fan

I find the most useful thing to have in my bag when I go into the theme parks is a battery operated fan.

Wearing a mask while you are outside can make things feel hotter than expected, and when I have my battery operated fan I’m able to pop it on when I need an extra boost of cold air to help me feel more comfortable.

Walt Disney World Reopening Theme Park Essentials
Extra Face Coverings

Speaking of feeling more comfortable, I always pack extra face coverings just in case I need to switch them through the day.

It’s the rainy season and wearing a wet face covering is about as comfortable as wearing wet socks, so just make sure you pack an extra mask so that you’ll have it just in case.

Walt Disney World Reopening Theme Park Essentials
Alcohol Pads

This one might sound weird…but stick with me…

I bring alcohol pads, much like the ones that you’d find in a Doctor’s office, to help clean my phone throughout the day.

One thing that I have become hyper aware of is how many times I pick up and put down my phone from a surface during the day, and this gives me an extra slice of peace of mind.

Walt Disney World Reopening Theme Park Essentials
Portable Cell Phone Charger

On every list I’ve ever made about what I keep in my bag, a portable cell phone charger has always been on the list.

However, it’s even more important now as you are going to need to do more things on your phone in the theme parks throughout the day.

These are my five theme park essentials, but I’m sure as I visit the parks more I’m going to find there other things that I like keeping with me so I’m sure they’ll be a part two to this post.

If you have a must-have to bring in your theme park bag, especially for the Walt Disney World Reopening, I would love to hear about it!

Orlando Science Center Pompeii Exhibit Update

Orlando Science Center Pompeii Exhibit Update

The Orlando Science Center announced today that Pompeii: The Immortal City will now premiere on October 26, 2020.

This blockbuster exhibition features over 100 authentic artifacts and experiences that will plunge visitors into the heart of the ancient city.  Orlando Science Center is one of only three locations in the nation to host Pompeii: The Immortal City and is the last stop on its US tour, which concludes on January 24, 2021.

The exhibition’s stay in Orlando is funded in part by Orange County Government and its tourism partners through the Arts & Cultural Affairs Blockbuster Program. It was developed and produced by TEMPORA in collaboration with Civita and Filmmaster based on the scientific research of Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli and Museo Galileo Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza, Firenze and distributed by Exhibits Development Group.

“Pompeii is the perfect exhibit for these times,” said JoAnn Newman, President and CEO of Orlando Science Center. “The artifacts encourage quiet contemplation while timed entry limits capacity and offers people ample time, and distance, to examine displays and better understand the magnificence and ultimate tragedy of this remarkable place.”

Spectacular immersive moments will allow visitors to experience the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius and its destructive path through the city. In just 24 hours, Pompeii was buried, and perfectly preserved, by volcanic ash in 79 AD. Displays of artwork, jewelry, statues, architecture, multimedia experiences and recreations of mechanical devices, allow visitors to discover this first-century Roman town and its many technological achievements.

Advance tickets are now on sale at www.osc.org/pompeii. People who originally reserved tickets for Pompeii before it was postponed can contact gservices@osc.org to reschedule their visit.

General admission tickets will be $26 for adults and $18 for youth (advance booking fees and parking fees apply) and include access to Pompeii: The Immortal City plus Orlando Science Center exhibits and experiences.

Orlando Science Center Members receive free admission to Pompeii: The Immortal City with their membership (advance booking fees apply).

Tickets are only available online

Please review Orlando Science Center’s health and safety guidelines (subject to change) before visiting at www.osc.org/reopening-plan.

A Taste of Epcot to Debut at the Park

A Taste of Epcot International Food and Wine Festival 2020

One of the best times of year to visit the Walt Disney World Resort is the annual EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival, and Imagineers have cooked up a creative and modified festival experience that will be the longest festival yet – A Taste of EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival!

This new take on the foodie festival will debut July 15 and continue through the fall, offering over 20 signature global marketplaces like Hawaii, Hops & Barley, and Islands of the Caribbean, spaced out around the park.

A Taste of Epcot International Food and Wine Festival 2020

The Taste of EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival combines the floral fun of Flower & Garden with the global goodies of the annual Food & Wine Festival.

If you didn’t get to see the park’s newest topiary, Remy, in the France pavilion, or to purchase any Flower & Garden merchandise, this is your chance!

A Taste of Epcot International Food and Wine Festival 2020

For scavenger hunt fans, Remy’s Ratatouille Hide and Squeak scavenger hunt returns to take guests on an adventure to find their favorite ’Tiny Chef’.

While we don’t have information about the Food & Wine merchandise yet, we are sure to share the information as the products join the fun later on after the festival begins.

While popular musical acts during the “Eat to the Beat Concert Series” often pack the house, they will not be a part of the Take of Epcot International Food & Wine Festival in an effort to accommodate proper physical distancing.

However, there will be plenty of music to enjoy at America Gardens Theatre with local EPCOT entertainment such as Mariachi Cobre, the JAMMitors and more.

It’s going to be awesome to see these fan favorites perform throughout the day, giving audiences more options to enjoy them.

The Orlando Crayola Experience has Reopened

The Orlando Crayola Experience at Florida Mall is once again welcoming guests to get creative!

Orlando Crayola Experience

The attraction has implemented several new protocols aligned with state and local requirements, guidance from the Centers for Disease Control, and industry recommendations that are designed to promote cleanliness, social distancing, and reduced physical contact.

Some key things that you will notice on your next visit to Orlando’s Crayola Experience include:

  • Limits to the number of guests in the attraction, theater show, and retail store.
  • Entry screenings and temperature checks on team members (employees) prior to entering the building for work each day and requiring those who don’t feel well to go home.
  • Required face coverings for team members while in public areas.
  • Enhanced and increased frequency of cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces – such as tabletops, countertops, stools, computer screens, doors, handrails, trash containers, water fountains, and restrooms throughout the attraction, café and retail store.

  • Additional hand sanitizer stations throughout the attraction.
  • Acrylic barriers around registers and guest relations.
  • Signage and ground markers in high-traffic areas to remind guests to maintain proper distancing when in line or navigating through the attraction and retail store.
  • Temporary modification to certain activities and food service areas to promote physical distancing and cleanliness.
  • All payments must now be made with cashless transactions. Self-service payment terminals at registers in both the attraction and retail store accept major credit cards, debit cards, and Apple Pay.
  • Touchless e-ticketing for general admission tickets purchased at a cashier or kiosk on site.
  • Extending annual pass and ticket expiration dates.
  • Offering a new ticketing option for unlimited visits through the end of the year.

  • Crayons have been removed from tables and the Colossal Caddy, and chalk from the Scribble Square area; instead supplies are included in each guest bag received upon admission.
  • Theater show seating is limited to 25 percent capacity.
  • The number of available stations on some attractions has been reduced.
  • Character appearances are suspended until further notice.
