2017 World Sword Swallower’s Day at Ripley’s

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium Orlando will once again play host again this year to a majority of the world’s most skilled sword swallowers as they demonstrate their death-defying skills to mark World Sword Swallower’s Day with free events on Saturday, February 25.

Ripley's Believe It or Not! Odditorium Orlando 2017 World Sword Swallower's Day

This will be the tenth year that Ripley’s has hosted the event, which celebrates the 4,000 year old art and honors the few people in the world who risk their lives every time they swallow a sword. The event also recognizes the contributions that sword swallowers have made to medicine and science. There are only a few dozen people in the world able (and willing) to swallow swords.
“Sword swallowers have been prodded and examined by doctors and scientists in the name of science for the past 150 years, often without being recognized for their contributions,” said Dan Meyer, President, Sword Swallower’s Association International. “We want to change that. That’s one of the reasons we celebrate World Sword Swallower’s Day.”
Ripley’s Believe It or Not! will host sword swallowers at more than a dozen of its Odditoriums across the country, providing FREE shows for the public.

Central Florida’s own Ted Campbell
In Orlando, Central Florida’s own Ted Campbell (aka “Will Rotten”) will demonstrate his amazing sword swallowing skills on World Sword Swallower’s Day. He’ll be joined by other local sword swallowers, including Red Stuart, who will attempt to swallow more than 50 swords at one time! The show will start at 1:30 pm with the Big Swallow finale at 2:25 pm. The show is FREE and will take place at Ripley’s Orlando Odditorium.
Ripley's Believe It or Not! Odditorium Orlando 2017 World Sword Swallower's DayRipley’s Believe It or Not! has long chronicled the incredible feat of sword swallowing.
Sword swallowers were prominently featured at the very first Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit News

A restored print of Poor Papa(1927), the first Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon, will be included when the Walt Disney Signature Collection Presents Disney Pinocchio is available on Blu-ray and DVD on January 31st.

Walt Disney Studios Movie Round Up 1 26 2017 - Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Poor Papa Short
D23.com

This amazing restoration is sourced from digital scans of a 16mm silent print that was made in 1930 for home use and discovered in the UK. This is one of only three known surviving prints on this title.

Max Lark on D23.com shared a little bit of the history behind the short.

In 1927, while Walt was wrapping up the “Alice Comedies,” his distributor, Charles Mintz, brokered a deal with Universal for Walt to create a cartoon character. That new character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, would go on to star in 26 cartoons from the Disney studio. The series proved popular, and the character was the first to generate Disney merchandise—a candy bar, a stencil set, and a pin-back button!

Poor Papa was the first Oswald cartoon produced, but Mintz felt that Oswald looked “old” so the short was not released. The next Oswald short Walt and Ub produced, Trolley Troubles on September 5, 1927, debuted a redesigned younger version of Oswald. Given this second short’s positive critical reaction by the public, Universal and Mintz ultimately released Poor Papa on June 11, 1928. In this rather charming story, a bunch of storks bombard Oswald with bunnies until our hero figures out a way to thwart them.

All-New Original Song announced for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Soundtrack

Five-time Grammy winning and best-selling recording artist Celine Dion will perform an all-new original song, “How Does A Moment Last Forever,” for Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast that is included on the film’s soundtrack.

Disney Music

Written by eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin”) and veteran lyricist and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice (“The Lion King,” “Evita”), “How Does A Moment Last Forever” is an emotional ballad about holding onto life’s precious moments. Portions of the song are performed throughout the film and interpolated into the underscore before Dion’s full-length version debuts in the film’s custom main-on-end title design.

Says Dion, “Being a part of the original ‘Beauty and the Beast’ was such a magical experience in my life, and I’m truly honored to be a part of this film again.”

Character Posters for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast

We also got our first look at the character posters for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast from Walt Disney Studios, and they look PERFECT!!!

Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as the Beast and as the Prince, Luke Evans as Gaston, Kevin Kline as Maurice, Josh Gad as LeFou, Ewan McGregor as Lumière, Stanley Tucci as Cadenza, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Plumette, Audra McDonald as Garderobe, Ian McKellen as Cogsworth and Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts.

Disney’s Magic Camp in Production

Production has begun on Disney’s Magic Camp, a live-action comedy starring Adam Devine (“Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates,” “Pitch Perfect”), Gillian Jacobs (“Community,” “Girls”) and Emmy® and Golden Globe® winner Jeffrey Tambor (“Transparent,” “The Larry Sanders Show”) directed by Mark Waters (“Bad Santa 2,” “Mean Girls”).

Walt Disney Studios Movie Round Up 1 26 2017 Magic Camp Collage

Tambor plays Roy Preston, the owner of a summer camp for aspiring young magicians and Devine is Andy, a former camper whose flailing career as a magician has forced him to return to the camp as a counselor. Also returning to the camp is Andy’s former partner and current nemesis, Darkwood, played by Jacobs, who is now a successful magician. When preparations begin for the end-of-summer magic contest between rival teams of campers, Andy and his team of ragtag misfits must go head to head with Darkwood and her campers. In the process, Andy is inspired by the young campers and rediscovers his passion for magic.

The film is shooting on locations in and around Los Angeles and is scheduled for release in 2017.

Relaxing in the Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom
Relaxing with Mom at the Magic Kingdom

Sometimes you just want a quiet day in the park. Other times you’re with a theme park newbie or someone who isn’t a fan of rides. For whatever reason, there are times that you find yourself not riding rides, and that’s okay. Some of my favorite attractions past and present are not rides. I thought I’d share a few so if you are touring a theme park with someone who is unable or unwilling to ride, or you just want to experience a park in a different way, here are some of my go to attractions. I’m starting this series with the Magic Kingdom, so enjoy!

Relaxing in the Magic Kingdom

Fantasyland holds one of my favorite things of all, an attraction that typically has a very short wait time, is sitting down, and in air conditioning. This magical show is called Mickey’s PhilharMagic and is a fun 3D film featuring some great songs from Disney movies and that rascal Donald Duck.

Me enjoying a/c at PhilharMagic

A classic in Adventureland that has thankfully been restored to its previous incarnation, is the wonderful Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room. This great show exhibits the audio animatronic birds who sing words, and flowers who croon in the tiki tiki tiki tiki tiki room. Again, this is sitting down, and in air conditioning. Are you following a theme here folks?

Tiki Room

Now Frontierland holds another classic that was a favorite, then we had a parting of ways, but have since reconciled. The Country Bear Jamboree still has some of the great bear band rhythm, but not as much as it had before, and it made me sad/mad for awhile when the cuts were made, so I may have stayed away for a bit. Time has passed now, and I’ve missed those bears dearly, so again, sitting down, air conditioning, clapping, singing, and Max, Buff, and Melvin.

Country Bears

On Main Street USA it is truly a must to catch the Dapper Dans and listen to a set or two of their a capella harmonies. Often they will even take requests and can be found around the Harmony Barber Shop, which makes sense as they are a barbershop quarter. The Mayor is often hanging around, and if you’re lucky, you may even get one of his super rare business cards. Also on Main Street if you are around for it, you should try to see the Flag Retreat ceremony, but be warned, you will probably need a tissue as they typically honor a veteran guest each day in the Magic Kingdom.

Dapper Dans

Parades are great ways to enjoy days without rides and see lots of characters without standing in line to see them. You can often find a spot to sit and grab a snack and rest before the parade. While you are waiting for the parade to start, you can people watch, which is another one of my favorite park activities in the Magic Kingdom. You will see people from all over the world, but you may even see someone you know from home. It is funny what a small world it is!

It was announced that Cristela Alonzo, as unconventional trainer Cruz Ramirez, and Armie Hammer, as next-gen racer Jackson Storm, will be joining Owen Wilson in the cast of Cars 3.

Cruz Ramirez is a sunny-but-fierce unconventional trainer at the Rust-eze Racing Center. She expertly arms the team’s talented rookies with cutting-edge tools to tear up the track—but she nearly stalls when her longtime idol Lightning McQueen shows up. While she’d love to help him find his way back to the top, she knows the competition is faster than ever, and victory is all about speed—or is it?

Jackson Storm is fast, sleek and ready to race. A frontrunner in the next generation of racers, Storm’s quiet confidence and cocky demeanor are off-putting—but his unmatched speed threatens to redefine the sport. Trained on high-tech simulators that are programmed to perfect technique and maximize velocity, Jackson Storm is literally built to be unbeatable—and he knows it.

Lightning McQueen is world champion—a modern-day racing legend who’s riding high with five Piston-Cup wins under his hood. Suddenly, he finds himself faced with a new generation of racers who threaten not only his dominance in the sport—but the confidence that got him there. Determined to get back to the pole position, the #95 must decide if his love for racing is enough to fuel the comeback of his life.

And finally in Cars 3 news, I wanted to share the new extended look!

Dining with a Food Allergy at Walt Disney World

Dining with a Food Allergy at Walt Disney World Pizzerizzo Allergy Menu
Pizzerizzo Allergy Menu

Dining with a food allergy can be very tricky and a source of stress when you are traveling. However Walt Disney World has quite a number of options available to those with a food allergy, dietary restriction, or lifestyle choice for their diet. I wanted to share a few of the things that you can do ahead of time to help you in your planning if you do have a food allergy or sensitivity to make your dining plans easier (and safer).

Dining with a Food Allergy at Walt Disney World

With Walt Disney World being one of the most visited destinations in the world, they see millions of guests annually. Accordingly, they have started to recognize that many of us have food allergies and/or dietary sensitivities and restrictions.

The process starts when you are making reservations or going to a dining location, because you will always want to make the cast members aware of your allergies or dietary restrictions so they can accommodate your needs in the best way possible.

If you are calling Disney Dining to make a reservation, let them know you have an allergy so that when you check-in the host or hostess can easily mark your table as having a special dining request. Or if you book a dining reservation online, simply check that boxes that best fit your dietary needs. But don’t worry if you forget to do either of those, because you can always let them know when you arrive at the restaurant. You can also contact the Special Dietary Requests Line for further assistance at 407-824-5967.

If your allergy isn’t listed in the most common ones online or on the My Disney Experience app, there is an “other” box that can be selected and you can explain the specifics to the server when you arrive.

Dining with a Food Allergy at Walt Disney World Advance Dining Reservation Food allergy question

In the last few years Walt Disney World’s restaurants, both table service and counter service locations, have started to provide guests with what they call Allergy Menus. These menus address the most common food allergies, which include: milk (dairy), corn, egg, wheat (gluten), peanut, soy, shellfish, fish, and tree nuts.

Here is an example of the allergy menu I received on our last visit to Narcoosee’s.

Another option at the restaurants of Walt Disney World is to speak with a chef if you don’t see any choices that meet your needs on the Allergy Menu.

When the chef comes to your table, they will ask you more about your food allergies or sensitivities to better discuss all the options you have at their dining location.

If you are dining at a buffet, the chef can walk you through the line and tell you exactly what you can and can’t have. At a table service restaurant if you see something on the regular menu that you’d like, but has something you can’t have in it you can ask your chef, and more often than not, they can tweak it for you. The chefs are great and like to be creative and will even sometimes make completely off the menu custom dishes if you don’t see something to your liking on the Allergy Menu.

It never hurts to ask! Always make sure you let them know what you like, too. My friends and I have been amazed with some of the dishes the chefs have come up with when we let them run wild with a little freedom.

I recommend looking at menus online before you make your reservations to get an idea of what the restaurant offers to make sure they have something you may be able to eat, keeping in mind that items are subject to change. Some of Allergy Menus will be more extensive depending on the restaurant.

When you are On the Go, there are tons of great snacks being added to the parks and resorts for guests with allergies all the time.

Throughout the resort you will find snacks ranging from fresh fruit to other vegan and gluten free items readily available in the Snacks with Character line that was recently introduced.

If you have a sweet tooth AND food allergies or dietary restrictions, a visit to Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC at Disney Springs should be in your plans. All of the treats in this special bakery are nut free, vegan, Kosher, and gluten free. I’m allergic to pistachios and am gluten free, and I am usually restricted in what I can have…but not here. It is amazing!

The bottom line is don’t be afraid to eat at Disney restaurant because of a food allergy or if you’re vegan or have a food sensitivity. I promise that whatever dietary sensitivity you may have, in the 45 plus years Walt Disney World has been operating there’s a 99.99% chance that they’ve handled it successfully multiple times over.

Doing a little homework before you arrive never hurts, but Walt Disney World will always do their best since your safety is their number one priority during your visit.
