The Fourth of July is rapidly approaching this Friday and Walt Disney World is a great place to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day. What is the holiday you most closely associate fireworks with? Fireworks of course are a special treat any time of year, but Disney really ramps up the pyrotechnics for the Fourth of July.
At the Magic Kingdom, their Independence Day fireworks called Disney’s Celebrate America! – A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky are actually shown on both July 3rd and July 4th at 9pm and lasts about 15 minutes. If you get the chance, I highly recommend catching this show on 7/3 as crowds tend to be a little lighter, plus this allows you to catch a different fireworks show at either Epcot or Disney’s Hollywood Studios on the Fourth.
Epcot will show their Illuminations: Reflections of Earth regular fireworks show at 10pm, then adds a 7 minute tag starting around 10:13pm called The Heartbeat of Freedom. This is honestly my favorite fireworks show of the entire year, so if you are here for Independence Day, this is my recommendation. If you do end up at Epcot on the 4th, do not miss one of the performances of the Voices of Liberty! Their Fourth of July Concert at the America Gardens Theatre will be held at 12:30pm, 1:45pm and 3:00pm. The last two times I have seen this show it has moved me to tears. Their live version of Golden Dream and the military medley especially can turn even the hardest of hearts to mush. At the Kidcot Fun Stop guests can stop by and test their knowledge of Americana and learn fun facts. Once guests complete the Discovery Experience, they will receive and award certificate.
The fireworks for Independence Day at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, called the Special July 4th Fireworks Presentation, will be at 10:20pm. They last about 12 minutes and will be fired off behind the Sorcerer’s Hat and are often best viewed from Hollywood Blvd. or even just outside the park entrance.
No matter which park you choose for fireworks, you will have a blast! 😉 Stay tuned for resort activities for Independence Day later this week. In the meantime, check out our videos below from previous years’ Fourth of July celebrations!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom has offered a tour called Wild By Design for several years now. It focuses primarily on the onstage areas of the park including details of Anandapur in Asia, Pangani Forest Exploration Trail in Africa, Dinoland U.S.A. and Discovery Island.
This three hour walking tour is available to guests ages 14 and up and costs $60 plus tax. Some discounts such as Disney Visa Card may apply. Contact Disney’s Tour department directly at 407-939-8687 to schedule this tour before it ends on September 26th. The tour is held on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
The tour also includes a light continental breakfast and possibly a souvenir. While focusing on design of the park and animal care, this seems like a great tour to check out while you can before it disappears.
Prepayment is required for the Wild By Design tour and it has a two day cancellation policy. Theme park admission is not included, but is required for this tour.
How many of you have seen the 1959 Walt Disney Productions film Darby O’Gill and the Little People? This gem features a young Sean Connery as Michael McBride along with Janet Munro as Katie O’Gill and Albert Sharpe as the title character. If you haven’t seen this classic yet, let me tell you a bit about it.
For those who aren’t aware, I have a slight affinity (read: obsession) with Sean Connery. He is my favorite actor hands down, the celebrity I’d most like to meet, and the lock screen on my phone. He is James Bond to me, and many others. I will revisit that character in a bit. I discovered this film existed, thanks to a Disney cd box set I bought in the mid 1990s. I made it my mission to track it down and eventually got it on dvd when it was re-released a few years back. The cd had Sean Connery singing a lovely ditty from the film called Pretty Irish Girl.
Darby O’Gill is the caretaker in Ireland for Lord Fitzpatrick at the beginning of the film, but is shortly thereafter replaced by Michael McBride. Darby has a habit of spinning tall tales at the pub over several pints of whiskey, so it isn’t surprising when nobody believes him that he is friends with little people and their King Brian. Quite a bit of hilarity ensues throughout the film while O’Gill tries to convince others that he now has three wishes since he’s captured the leprechaun. There are definitely some darker elements to the story as well that younger children under 6 or 7 might find frightening. Without spoiling too much, it is safe to say this is a family friendly film that is filled with comedy, a bit of drama, action, and even romance. Peter Ellenshaw and his crew did an amazing job with the special effects of this film.
While Darby O’Gill and the Little People may not be the best known live action Disney film, it is definitely entertaining. It also helped launch Sean Connery into superstardom. It is because producer Cubby Broccoli’s wife Dana saw Sean Connery in this film that he was even considered for the role of James Bond a few years later. The dvd even includes an extra called Mr. Connery Goes to Hollywood. There are also two other fun bonus features called Little People, Big Effects showing how trick shots were used to imply the size difference, and I Captured The King of the Leprechauns, which was a segment on Walt Disney Presents the Disneyland TV show. If you are looking for a fun way to spend a couple of hours with the family, I highly recommend checking out this underrated classic. Darby O’Gill and the Little People is available through iTunes, Netflix and to rent through Amazon Instant Video.
“This film deserves to be seen as a major breakthrough for Jenny Slate who commands the kind of humor and honesty that stars possess.” – Erik Childress, FILM THREAT
Based on the 2009 short of the same name, OBVIOUS CHILD takes on the controversial topic of abortion as part of its story yet somehow manages to be as charming, humorous, and irresistible as any indie romantic comedy in recent memory. Saturday Night Live veteran Jenny Slate plays Donna Stern, a 27-year-old, Jewish, Brooklyn bookstore clerk by day and aspiring and affably lewd comedian by night who struggles to keep her spirits up, on and off the stage, after a traumatizing break-up. Turning to alcohol to drown her sorrows, Donna performs a depressing set of break-up vengeance and Holocaust jokes, and then has a one-night stand with a nice WASPy guy named Max (Jake Lacy, TV’s The Office). A few weeks later, she finds herself facing an unexpected pregnancy. Filmmaker Gillian Robespierre has crafted an honest look at abortion, which is funny and frank without being negligent of the emotional weight that comes with such a harrowing choice. And Slate is absolutely terrific here-adorable and hilarious and genuine-in a breakthrough performance that is nicely supported by Gaby Hoffman, Richard Kind, Polly Draper, and David Cross
Toy Story was the first feature-length film animated entirely by computer. The star of the proceedings is Woody, a pull-string cowboy toy belonging to a wide-eyed youngster named Andy. Whenever Andy’s out of the room, Woody revels in his status as the boy’s number one toy. His supremacy is challenged by a high-tech, space-ranger action-figure named Buzz Lightyear, who, unlike Woody and his pals, believes that he is real and not merely a plaything. The rivalry between Woody and Buzz hilariously intensifies during the first half of the film, but when the well-being of Andy’s toys is threatened by a nasty next-door neighbor kid named Sid, Woody and Buzz join forces to save the day. Superb though the computer animation may be, what really heightens Toy Story are the voice-over performances by such celebrities as Tom Hanks (as Woody), Tim Allen (as Buzz), and Don Rickles (as an appropriately acerbic Mr. Potato Head). Director John Lasseter earned a special achievement Academy Award, while Randy Newman landed an Oscar nomination for his evocative musical score.

Lions’ 2-0 win on Sunday extends Club record for unbeaten matches to 15 consecutive
Dayton, OH. – Orlando City SC (12-0-3, 39 points) set a new Club record for consecutive unbeaten matches on Sunday afternoon, after defeating the Dayton Dutch Lions 2-0 in Ohio. The victory over the Dutch Lions propels the Club record to 15 matches in a row without a loss, surpassing the original record of 14 games which was set during the 2012 campaign.
It took all of 53 minutes for the first goal of the match to arrive for the USL PRO league-leaders. Adama Mbengue, who was a constant headache for the Dayton defense in the first half, controlled a pass into the box from Boden nicely before firing the ball into the bottom corner past Williams.
Boden was also a constant threat down the left side and created the chance for Mbengue after cutting inside and calmly rolling the ball to the Senegalese winger for his second league goal of the season.
Six minutes later, Kevin Molino was able to provide what seemed to be the second goal of the match, after pouncing on Ceren’s powerful shot that was saved by Dayton ‘keeper Matt Williams, but the current USL PRO leading goal-scorer was ruled offside.
Moments later, F.C. Dallas loanee Brian Span, who has been in good form as of late, had a prime opportunity to find the back of the net but was unable to properly connect with Boden’s ball into the six yard box.
After a relatively quiet first half, Lions Goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo was forced to make two key saves just ten minutes later, parrying strong efforts from both Eli Garner and Matt Walker in the 67th minute as Dayton attempted to level the score-line.
City’s increasing momentum would be stalled momentarily, though, when the match was delayed for a half an hour in the 68thminute of play, due to thunder and lightning strikes nearby the stadium.
With play resuming one hour later, the match picked up where it previously left off, in Orlando’s end of the pitch, and Aaron Schoenfeld came close to nodding in a header from an in-swinging corner kick. Schoenfeld, who sits in second place behind Kevin Molino on the USL PRO scoring charts, was capably managed throughout the match by the City backline- which looked impenetrable all afternoon.
Throughout the final 20 minutes of the match, the Lions’ defense was forced to sustain Dayton’s late push for an equalizer. The back four, anchored by veteran center-halves Rob Valentino and Brad Rusin, was able to withhold the Dutch Lions’ pressure, allowing Orlando to maintain its clean sheet through 90 minutes and break the club record for consecutive unbeaten matches (15).
Molino provided the final dagger in the 93rd minute when the Club’s first MLS signing weaved through the box and slotted the ball away for his 10th goal of the season.
Orlando’s next match will take place at ESPN Wide World of Sports on Saturday, June 28 when the Lions take on second-place side, LA Galaxy II. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. EST

Guests can now interact with green-energy based models as part of Tampa Electric partnership at LEGOLAND Florida
LEGOLAND Florida and Tampa Electric unveiled a new 6-foot LEGO ® Globe next to the Imagination Zone attraction venue as part of initiatives to further education on renewable energy inside the park. Built out of more than 250,000 LEGO brick, guests will be able to enjoy the installation along with a new interactive area that features LEGO mini-model communities. The additions to the park emphasize the use of renewable energy, reinforcing LEGOLAND Florida’s efforts on green energy education.
“We are excited to add both the LEGO Globe and interactive communities to Imagination Zone, giving our guests a new way to interact while learning the benefits of renewable energy,” said LEGOLAND Florida General Manager Adrian Jones.
Guests will be able to experience an entirely new interactive area within Imagination Zone, including mini communities that show the full effect of renewable energy. The LEGO Globe will also include tactile elements, with visitors able to affect the rate of rotation with solar panels located around the new model.
LEGOLAND Florida and Tampa Electric previously kicked off the partnership on Earth Day 2014 (April 22) by running the park completely on renewable energy for the entire day- the first theme park to do so in the U.S. The partnership also included the installation of a 30-kilowatt solar panel array mounted atop the Imagination Zone attraction venue. Funded by Tampa Electric, the system supports Tampa Electric’s Renewable Energy program that lets the company’s customers purchase a portion of their electricity from renewable sources. Imagination Zone, where the LEGO Globe is located, is being solely powered by this program.
The new areas add to the multiple educational aspects already within LEGOLAND Florida. The park gives children a chance to learn and play with STEM-based activities such as LEGO MINDSTORMS robots, Build & Test and Power Towers. The additions are included with park admission.
Fun facts about the new LEGOLAND Florida LEGO Globe instillation include:
The Globe took over 600 hours to construct and stands 6 feet tall
The model consists of over 250,000 LEGO brick
The LEGO Globe rotates based on the amount of sunshine , showing the effects of solar power
The model is also interactive, with visitors able to affect the rate of rotation with tactile solar panels
Mini landmarks are visible for guests to enjoy, including the Eiffel Tower, pyramids from Egypt and much more
