SeaWorld Orlando Works With Local Eye Clinic For Penguins

A rockhopper penguin has his eyes examined by the veterinarian.

SeaWorld Orlando Veterinary & Aviculture Teams Work with Local Animal Eye Clinic to Remove Cataracts from Four Penguins

A total of four SeaWorld Orlando penguins — one rockhopper and three gentoo – are healing nicely after receiving a specialty surgery on August 28, 2014 to remove cataracts at Animal Eye Associates in Maitland, Fla. The surgery was performed by veterinary ophthalmologist Dr. Heidi Denis, who specializes in animal ophthalmology.

SeaWorld Orlando SeaWorld Cares Penguin Surgery
SeaWorld Orlando’s Veterinary and Aviculture teams work with the Animal Eye Associates, in Maitland, Fla., to remove cataracts from four penguins.

“As penguins get older they begin to show age-related health issues, just like humans,” said Dr. Lara Croft, SeaWorld Senior Veterinarian. “One of these signs is cataracts – a clouding of the eye lens that affects their quality of vision and quality of life. Thanks to this surgery, these four penguins will eventually regain vision and can return to normal behaviors, including eating on their own and swimming.”

The four penguins range in age from early to late 20s, which exceeds the life expectancy of their wild counterparts. Older penguins in the wild with compromised vision would most likely succumb to predators or starvation.

SeaWorld aviculturists noticed some of the older penguins in the Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin habitat weren’t eating and needed to be hand-fed. The vets arranged a consultation with eye specialists, and the ophthalmology team at Animal Eye Associates cleared the penguins for the procedure.

“Cataracts are very prevalent in our more than 20-year-old birds, and we now have regular ophthalmology consults for all of our older birds.   Including these recent procedures, 17 penguins have been given restored sight with this surgery,” Dr. Croft said.

Halloween Party Costume Fun

One of my favorite things about attending Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is people watching and checking out all the great Halloween costumes. Don’t get me wrong, I love the fact that the Magic Kingdom is one of the few places it is okay for an adult without a kid to trick or treat and subsequently bring home two full bags of Halloween candy. The Boo To You Halloween Parade is my favorite and do you ever really get tired of Happy Hallowishes? I think not.

I thought I’d share some of my favorite pictures I took of costumes from the Halloween Party the other night. I had a great time and got to do almost everything I wanted due to some well executed plans. I saw so many awesome Halloween costumes and some were so creative and well planned I wish I had thought of them. Some of them I didn’t recognize and wish I had asked who they were. The most prevalent I think were probably Anna and Elsa for the girls, Captain America for the guys, Rapunzel for ladies, and Batman for the boys. All in all it was a ton of fun and I asked everyone if I could take their picture before I took it, especially making sure I got permission from parents before taking kids’ pics. Hope you enjoy!

In addition, the astronauts will be featured throughout the day in Astronaut Encounter at the Visitor Complex. Each astronaut will give a 30-minute“Mini Mission Recap” highlighting their missions aboard Atlantis. Astronaut Encounter is included in daily admission.

The 12 astronauts also will participate in signing opportunities in the Space Shop throughout the day with lithographs and books available for sale and signing.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex annual passholders can attend a special presentation featuring a question and answer session with the astronauts in Space Shuttle Atlantis from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.

Space Shuttle Atlantis has become a “must-see” experience for Central Florida tourists following its grand opening on June 29, 2013. Guests experience the inspiring accomplishments of the U.S. space shuttle program at the unique 90,000-square-foot attraction where visitors get nose to nose with a real spaceflown orbiter. The Atlantis orbiter is displayed as if floating in space as if departing from the International Space Station – the only space shuttle orbiter in the world exhibited this way.

Space Shuttle Atlantis Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

Guests also can train on various realistic Space Shuttle Atlantis simulators: take a simulated spacewalk, land the space shuttle on the shuttle landing facility, operate the robotic Canadarm or dock with the International Space Station. Shuttle Launch Experience®, part of Space Shuttle Atlantis, is an incredible journey of vertically launching into space and orbiting Earth aboard the space shuttle.  Guests also strap in for an all-too-real simulation, which immerses visitors in the sights, sounds and feelings of a space shuttle launch, including simulated weightlessness.

Space Shuttle Atlantis Great Balls of Fire Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

Since Space Shuttle Atlantis opened, the Visitor Complex has added the new Great Balls of Fire interactive exhibit which allows guests to discover the risks that asteroids, comets and meteorites present to our planet. The exhibit explores how we keep track of near-Earth objects while examining the effects of possible impacts. Within the Great Balls of Fire exhibit is Asteroid Encounter, where guests can climb aboard a “spaceship” and blast off to the asteroid belt and Jupiter while compiling data about asteroids and comets. Guests also can explore what would happen if one of these celestial bodies were to hit their hometown, determine Science Fact or Science Fiction of Hollywood movie clips and much more.

Space Shuttle Atlantis Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

Also new is the KSC Up-Close Explore Tour, which gives an insider’s view of the U.S. Space Program, from the launch sites of today at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station to the past and future of space exploration at Kennedy Space Center. The KSC Up-Close Explore Tour includes up-close views of the massive, 525-foot-high Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) (one of the largest structures in the world) and the Shuttle Landing Facility. The tour stops in between the Kennedy Space Center launch pads for a close-up photo opportunity, in front of the VAB, and on the NASA Causeway where guests are surrounded by a panoramic view of launch pads at Cape Canaveral that are currently accommodating rocket launches by NASA, SpaceX and the United Launch Alliance.

The Visitor Complex also provides some of the closest public launch viewing areas for the ongoing schedule of rocket launches taking place at Kennedy Space Center/Cape Canaveral Air Force Station each year. Guests can experience the sights, sounds and ground-shaking vibrations as rockets launch, carrying not only NASA science missions and government satellites, but also commercial space endeavors, such as SpaceX.

The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic returns for the fifth year to the Epcot Resort Area hotel October 31 – November 1, featuring more than 40 food and wine stations; 10 food and wine seminars and the opportunity to meet the masters behind the culinary magic.

Amidst a backdrop of live entertainment, celebratory surprises and even some spooky fun on Halloween night, guests will enjoy numerous opportunities to sip and savor all weekend as they stroll along the hotel’s causeway.

The two-night event offers an enticing array of culinary options from the hotel’s award-winning signature restaurants:  Il Mulino New York Trattoria, Shula’s Steak House and Todd English’s bluezoo, as well as wine and spirits sampling from around the globe.

The food selections are as innovative as they are enticing, ranging from Italian arancini, marrying Carnaroli rice, Osso Buco and spicy tomato sauce, and the Asian-inspired grilled scallops with puffed rice, edamame and ponzu jelly; to barbeque handcrafted bacon, accented with sweet potato puree and caramelized onions. And, the hotel’s World Champion Pastry Chef, Laurent Branlard, provides intrigue on the sweeter side with finishing touches like a chocolate crunch Napoleon with hazelnut daquoise and chocolate whipped cream, and a lemon peel mousse dome with blueberry cream and lemon angel food cake at its center.

“We’re excited about the fifth annual Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic,” said the hotel’s Director of Food & Beverage, Tony Porcellini. “This year, we’ll present even more intriguing wine selections from around the globe; showcase our culinary creativity with exciting new dishes; expand on our seminar offerings, and introduce a beer garden! Our goal is to make this event bigger and better each year and have fun doing it!”

New to the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic this year are:

· A beer garden, featuring a variety of local and seasonal brews from around the world, alongside homemade bar snacks made by the hotel’s culinary experts. An upgraded ticket option provides guests access to the beer garden.

· The Cheese Course seminar, which pays homage to fromage with a unique look at the art of wine and cheese pairing.

· The Fine Art of Sushi and Sake seminar, which will teach guests how to identify quality sushi and sake flavor profiles and pair the two.

· A hands-on Caipirinha seminar, where guests will learn both the traditional recipe and try some unique twists to this ever-popular Brazilian cocktail.

· Tequila University, offering an in-depth look at tequila, its different styles, the artisans who make it and the secrets to making the perfect margarita.

Returning seminars include: pasta-making, Italian wines, modern mixology, beer, wine-blending and champagne.  All seminars require separate tickets in addition to the causeway tickets, and space is limited.

To add to the event’s appeal, guests can enjoy a meet and greet with celebrity chef Todd English, the namesake of the hotel’s Todd English’s bluezoo restaurant.

New Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day Clip

A new clip from Disney’s Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day starring Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner is now available.

 httpv://youtu.be/c8OHYkVOJVI

Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day follows the exploits of 11-year-old Alexander (Ed Oxenbould) as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life—a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one calamity after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him. He soon learns that he’s not alone when his mom (Jennifer Garner), dad (Steve Carell), brother (Dylan Minnette) and sister (Kerris Dorsey) all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Anyone who says there is no such thing as a bad day just hasn’t had one. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, directed by Independent Spirit Award-winner Miguel Arteta (“The Good Girl,” “Cedar Rapids,” “Youth in Revolt”) from a screenplay by Rob Lieber, is a 21 Laps Entertainment/Jim Henson Company production. The film hits theaters nationwide Oct. 10, 2014.

Shopping With Character: Minnie Mouse

Shopping at Walt Disney World is always a lot of fun, and a great way to show your #DisneySide is by shopping with character!

I enjoy adding a bit of my favorite character to my everyday outfit or even my beauty routine.

While staying ‘budget friendly’ with gifts and souvenirs can be a challenge, I found some great ideas for under $25!

Since my favorite character is Minnie Mouse, I thought I would start with her!

Shopping With Character: Minnie Mouse

IMG_6137

Anytime I can find a kiss-lock coin purse I am over the moon! This embossed silicone coin purse is perfect at $9.95! I like to use them for keeping my earbuds, cord, and a brick organized in my backpack or purse.

IMG_6140

When I picked up this embroidered vinyl cosmetic case, and saw that it was only $9.95 I was thrilled. It would be great for keeping items like pencils organized, small necessities in a purse together that end up in a mess in the bottom (I hope that is not just me…), and even as a way to keep things like boarding passes and passports organized for longer trips. This pouch is a great bargain for any use!

IMG_6145

Want to add a touch of bling to an outfit? These rhinestone classic three circle Mickey Mouse silhouette bobby pins are awesome. They are super sparkly and useful, and at $19.95 a really playful touch for a fancier outfit.

IMG_6148

I adore wearing a bow in my hair, and for $9.95 this fabric bow is fun and durable! I am also a sucker for polka dots, so it is the best of both worlds for me!

IMG_6153

If you don’t like to wear bobby pins, these rhinestone and pearl classic three circle Mickey Mouse silhouette head bands are for you. At $16.95 you really can’t go wrong!

IMG_6157

You can also find these rhinestone classic three circle Mickey Mouse silhouette hair bands that are $14.95 for two. These are great if you like to wear a band around your wrist.

IMG_6160

Beautifully Disney has some amazing brushes, and this Minnie Mouse inspired Kabuki brush is no exception. For $21.95, this high quality brush is a great value.

IMG_6165

If you are looking for a utility pouch that is on the larger side, this pie-eyed Minnie Mouse vinyl case would be a good choice at $19.95.

IMG_6171

Beautifully Disney has this red and black polka dotted vinyl large cosmetic case with bow and mirror for $24.95. I like these vinyl cosmetic cases, because if a powder or eyeshadow breaks the clean up is easy.

IMG_6174

And rounding out my list is the zip ID Mickey and Minnie Mouse Bouncing Bouquet case from Vera Bradley. The Disney Vera Bradley Collection is wildly popular, and even on a small piece like this you can still get a glimpse of a character. This one takes some patience, because if you are set on finding the perfect one for you it could take some time.

I hope that you enjoyed a look at how you can add a touch of your favorite character to your wardrobe on a budget.

What is your favorite character to add as you are shopping with character?
