A Colorful Look at Cinderella

cinderella-landscape

Although Cinderella is a centuries old folklore tale, it was originally popularized in the 17th century by Charles Perrault.  In this version, titled Cendrillon, were added certain features of the tale well known in modern times: glass slippers, the pumpkin coach, and the fairy godmother.  It’s easy to see how, in the late 1940s, after enduring bad box office numbers due to World War II that Walt Disney himself turned to this version of the tale to create his next great animated movie Cinderella in 1950.  Now here we are in 2015, and Disney, as it moves toward a litany of live action remakes we get a new version of Cinderella.

This movie is brings in a mix of up and coming and seasoned actors and actresses like Lily James (Cinderella), Richard Madden (The Prince), Cate Blanchett (Lady Tremaine), and Helena Bonham Carter (Fairy Godmother).  In doing so it is clear that they are trying to attract a broad audience of both old and young adults.  To bring in a still younger audience to see the movie they have attached the new short Frozen Fever to the movie.  It’s not quite the Frozen sequel that people are looking for, but it will appease Frozen fans with a look at Anna’s birthday and what happens when Elsa gets sick.

At 30 minutes longer than it’s animated namesake, we get a lot more background into the story of Cinderella’s (simply Ella at the beginning of the movie) parents.  We also get to see the downward spiral of Ella into becoming Cinderella as her stepmother and stepsisters press her ever down until we find her at the bottom.  Her lowest.  Thats when Helena Bonham Carter comes onto the screen and works her ever quirky magic for viewers as she works magic on the screen as Cinderella’s fairy godmother. And from there it’s pretty much the story you already know, with no twists, turns, or deviations.

I have to be honest, I was not excited to be seeing this movie.  It’s not the sort of fare I tend to enjoy or that attracts me to the theater.  So I went in with low expectations.  And I personally could not bring myself to connect well with the movie.  My primary problem revolves around the main character.  Maybe my own personal feelings are too wrapped up in the animated version of the movie, but Lily James, to me, simply doesn’t evoke the elegance or grace as shown in Ink & Paint.  All the other characters to me are fantastic, and it’s not that James acts poorly… just to me, that’s not Cinderella up on the screen.  So I did not enjoy it.

That’s not to say it not worth seeing the movie.  It, like Maleficent, is a cleverly pretty movie.  It’s use of color, camera, space, and depth are fantastic.  If you watch closely during all of the ballroom scenes you will understand what I mean.  I suspect that overall critics will be split on this movie.  It’s well written, well directed, well shot, and even well acted.  But it lacks the quality and magic of the animated version.  Disney fans will want to see it.  Cinderella and Frozen fans will be there too.  Game of Thrones fans may go to see Madden.  But, if you love and are nostalgic about the animated Cinderella, you might find yourself seeing things my way.

Pick Six: Favorite Disney Movie Songs

Last night as we were watching Idina Menzel perform ‘Let it Go’ during last night’s Academy Awards, Congratulations to Frozen for two Oscars and to Robert Lopez for being the youngest EGOT, a few of us got into a discussion about what our favorite songs were from Disney Movies.

I thought I would take a break from the theme parks to share with you a personal post on my Pick Six of favorite Disney Songs.

Favorite Disney Movie Songs

Pick Six: Favorite Disney Movie Songs (In no particular order)

1. A Dream Is A Wish – Cinderella

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9H_1PiRg2H4

I will tell you in all fairness that Cinderella is both my favorite Disney Movie and Princess, so I fully admit to bias here! I adore this song with all of my heart! It’s haunting melody, beautiful message, and I feel the same way every morning when I hear my alarm. Also, I really wish I had birds that would help be make my bed!

2. Jolly Holiday – Mary Poppins

httpv://youtu.be/kw4gpy1BweM

When I was growing up, during the summer my brother and I were each able to pick out a VHS to rent from the local video store to watch for the week (I am REALLY showing my age here…), and while we would often choose different movies we always agreed on Mary Poppins when it was available. We would watch it over and over again, my Mom warned us we would break both the rewind button and the tape, and we sing and dance around our den like we were penguins or chimney sweeps.

Jolly Holiday was always our favorite, because it was just so fun and whimsical that you couldn’t help but sing a little louder or dance a little crazier. We would always get in trouble, but it was soooooo worth it!!!

3. Part of Your World – The Little Mermaid

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2TT7sN5iKU&feature=share&list=PL-muvh_380IZ0sptF1gJve_HVC95y3PJd&index=4

Little Mermaid came out when I was in Middle School, and we are all awkward and looking for our place in the world so Part of Your World really spoke to me.

I will also admit that I cannot help myself, and no matter where I am or what I am doing I will ALWAYS sing this song at the top of my lungs. It’s really involuntary, and I apologize in advance if you ever have to witness this!

4.  I Wanna Be Like You – The Jungle Book

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKnQoWWySm8&feature=share&list=PL-muvh_380IZFvEqlrEjQuuO2pou730Os

My husband, Dave, loves The Jungle Book, and as a result it has become a family favorite and go-to movie. There is nothing quite like watching your husband and you daughter dance around the house as they sing ‘I Wanna Be Like You’! The giggles, the shaking, the funny conversations about ‘What is he saying, Daddy?’…nope…It will never ever stop making me smile.

5. Reflection – Mulan

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgWiMm_Nffc&feature=share&list=PL-muvh_380IafMMO3fC55frFmfTG0tiyX&index=5

I seriously cannot see, sing, watch, or think about ‘Reflection’ from Mulan without welling up with tears.

We all struggle with finding our place in this world, balancing family and their expectations of us, and accepting & embracing that we are the way we are, and this song beautifully sums up these battles in a way that makes you feel like you are not alone. The no one is really who you think they are, because we all have our issues and insecurities.

It’s just perfect!

6. Whistle While You Work – Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Disney’s On The Record Version)

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cm-BILfr5js&list=PL71E8503E3E194BD9&feature=share&index=1

If you haven’t given Disney’s On The Record a listen, you are doing yourself a disservice! It is a glorious and wonderful arrangement of Disney songs from movies, shorts, attractions, and more. Seriously, GO LISTEN!

The Whistle While You Work mash-up featured is incredibly infectious, and I dare you not to move to the beat!

I’d love to hear what you think of my Favorite Disney Movie Song choices and what your favorites are!!!

Disney Movie Love Songs

It’s almost that time of year. Yes, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. So, I thought I’d share some of my picks for the most romantic Disney music to set the mood for your Valentine or any date night. Some are quirky, some are traditionally sappy, but I love them all. Hope you do too!

Married Life (Score from Up)

Hear me out on this one. I know it is practically enough to induce instant waterworks for me if I step onto Main Street and hear this song playing, but then I think about why. The beauty of it is, I cared so much about the love Carl and Ellie had for each other that in that montage of only a few minutes it was enough to make me love them and their relationship. It is a roller coaster ride of a piece of music that I adore.

Up

I See The Light (Tangled)

Okay, another one of those sometimes tear inducing songs (it’s not just me, right?), I know, but it is so gorgeous. So before I heard him sing as now, possibly my favorite prince, Flynn Rider, I loved Zachary Levi for his role in the tv series Chuck. This song took my adoration for him to a whole new level. The lanterns still kill me when I see them in the film, on the castle projection or during World of Color. It is fear and love rolled all into one poignant song that I absolutely love.

Tangled

Bella Notte (Lady And The Tramp)

This is one of those classic songs that has permeated pop culture and for good reason. The iconic image of Tony serenading Lady And The Tramp outside his restaurant while they share a plate of spaghetti and meatballs is indelible in many people’s memories. This was my picture of love as a child.

Lady And The Tramp
Lady And The Tramp

So Close (Enchanted)

A grown up love song for Giselle and Robert as they begin to realize their feelings for each other, while dancing at a ball all dressed up in New York City. And thinking of Patrick Dempsey doesn’t hurt the swoon factor for this song.

Enchanted

So This Is Love (Cinderella)

I’m not sure how many of you have picked out your wedding song before you’ve even met your spouse, but this is the one my Prince Charming would agree to if I had my way. Cinderella is my favorite and this song is two minutes and ten seconds of what I hope to someday feel for the man of my dreams.

Cinderella
Cinderella

Something There (Beauty And The Beast)

Another fantastic song playing out Belle and the Beast’s road to love. It isn’t love at first sight, but it takes a while to get there after a friendship blossoms.

Beauty And The Beast
Beauty And The Beast

Define Dancing (Score from Wall-E)

This isn’t the most traditional pick, but the love that develops between Wall-E and Eve is fantastic. I remember when the movie first came out that I was very apprehensive. How on Earth could I be entertained by a movie with very little dialogue that turns out to be a robot love story? Wow, was I wrong. The score does a phenomenal job of mirroring the “dance” between the two leads.

Wall-E

A Whole New World (Aladdin)

I recall purchasing this cassette when I was in middle school as a single with the Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle version on one side and as a bonus the Brad Kane and Lea Salonga version on the other. My love for Lea Salonga and her amazing voice grew deeper with this song, but it is really about Jasmine and Aladdin and finding each other when they are both running from their own worlds.

Aladdin
Aladdin

I’m sure I’ve left out some, but these are my picks for romance in musical form. They aren’t in any particular order, just that in which I remembered to write them down. Did I leave out any of your favorites? Let me know. I hope you all have a Valentine’s Day that is even half as romantic as these couples had in their movies!

Tour of Cinderella Castle Suite and Be Our Guest

When the Disney Parks Blog announced that they were going to be doing tours of Be Our Guest restaurant and Cinderella Castle suite, I just knew I had to get my name into the hat! And thankfully I was selected and I enjoyed every single second of being apart of this Limited Time Magic!

Magic Kingdom will always feel like my “home” park – it’s where I started when I became a cast member. And as many times as I’ve seen Cinderella Castle, I never imagined I’d be able to go into the castle suite.

Cinderella castle

My part of the group started in Be Our Guest and one of the imagineers that designed the restaurant gave us a tour of all the rooms.

We learned that the little cherubs on the ceiling *may* have a slight resemblance to the imagineers that worked on the restaurant 🙂

I had the grey stuff for breakfast. Breakfast of champions, right?

After that treat, it was time to go see the Cinderella castle suite! I have walked by this door more times than I even know and yet I was finally seeing it open!

cinderella castle suite door

We rode the elevator up to the suite level and before the door to the suite opened, I was already amazed.

And then it was time…

The details are beyond amazing!

The windows in the living room area tell Cinderella’s story.

Her home, the invitation the the ball, the clock striking midnight.

The glass slipper, Gus and Jaq finding the key, and the happy ever after.

These little mirror on either side of the fire place have a prince and princess on them. The best part is they were not made for the suite. The imagineers found them and knew they were perfect!

When they picked this chair out, it was purchased for its size – for kids. However, they were told that this little chair is a “slipper chair”, which people would use to put their slippers/house shoes on. How perfect is that?

I’m still in shock that I have been in the suite!

Disney Film Project Podcast Review

Disney Film Project Podcast
Disney Film Project Podcast

Films, for those who aren’t aware, are some of my favorite things in the entire world. My affinity for almost all things Disney mostly stems from my love of Disney movies. From there it grew to parks, music, tv shows, and beyond, but for me, it all comes back to the big screen. Imagine my excitement when a little over two years ago I learned that friends of mine were putting together a podcast revolving around reviewing and critiquing Disney films! I have to admit that I was a tad jealous that I wasn’t involved in the podcast, but that soon dissipated.

The Disney Film Project, from whence the Podcast was born, started as the brainchild of owner and proprietor, Ryan Kilpatrick. He began the project with this as his goal: “This is my attempt to view all the Disney films, both shorts and features. Read along to see what I learn as I embark on this voyage, and see what I discover as we watch the true genius of Walt Disney.” Ryan would often conduct what he called tweetwatches in a FriendFeed chat room where he would live tweet a movie and a bunch of us would all press play and watch along at the same time. We would jump in to the chat with questions and comments in awe of Ryan’s often exhaustive research regarding the film we were watching.

Eventually, the project grew into what quickly became one of my favorite podcasts, the Disney Film Project Podcast. Ryan recruited a fantastic crew of film buffs to be his co-hosts in Briana Alessio, Todd Perlmutter and our very own Cheryl Perlmutter as the glue that holds them all together as the show producer. From the very first episode on Beauty and the Beast back in January of 2011 up to this weeks episode 117 featuring Mulan, it has been entertaining along the entire way.

Disney Film Project Podcast hosts
Disney Film Project Podcast hosts

The podcast typically focuses on one film per episode, whether live action, animated feature, direct to video sequel or even Disney Channel Original Movies. Occasionally there are episodes that cover a theme like Halloween specials or multiple films in one, but for the most part on average a good hour or so is devoted to a single film. Each week it is apparent the effort that goes in to this podcast from the hosts of the show and their amazing research skills (always try to find a Star Wars connection).

I am one of those crazy completionists, so I diligently watch each film a few days prior to listening to the upcoming episode so it is fresh in my mind. This has been an interesting task as some of the films have been downright awful (I’m talking to you Condorman, Inspector Gadget, Beverly Hills Chihuahua 1 & 2 (and I’m sure eventually 3) and Hunchback of Notre Dame II), but even in the movies that are laborious to watch, the podcast episodes still shine. Sometimes it is even more enjoyable to hear a film completely torn apart. Along with those notoriously not good films you of course encounter the gems of classics like Mary Poppins, Darby O’Gill and the Little People (with my personal favorite, Sean Connery!!!), Cinderella, and fan favorites like the Avengers.

One of my favorite things about the Disney Film Project Podcast is that I always learn something new, whether it is a film I’ve never seen before, or one like The Little Mermaid I’ve seen dozens of times. These four take their time and do their homework to bring something fresh and new to each episode they produce. I have been fortunate to be on two episodes of the podcast for Cinderella and Up. If you want to go back and start from the beginning, you can download the mp3s via iTunes. DFPP is also available for streaming via Stitcher radio on smartphones, through the podcast app subscription on ios devices, and also streaming directly from the Disney Film Project website.

If you are looking for a new podcast that will keep you well informed and entertained when it comes to the films of the Walt Disney Company, including subsidiaries like Pixar, Marvel and Touchstone, look no further than the Disney Film Project Podcast. Go listen to what the wonky sluices over there have cooking up on their blog with new movie reviews, for films new to Blu Ray, in theaters or on the Disney Channel. This is one podcast you should definitely give a chance if you are at all a fan of Disney films and desire to learn more or even just to see if you can guess what their ratings are and if they match yours. Head on over and check them out now!

About The Louboutin Inspired Shoe:

Earlier this year, Disney worked with world-renowned shoe designer Christian Louboutin to re-create the iconic Cinderella slipper by updating it for the modern woman.  On July 5, during Haute Couture in Paris, France—Louboutin’s Cinderella-inspired shoe was revealed.  The shoe is made from delicate lace adorned with crystals that give the iconic shoe an enchanting look.  Two sparkling butterflies rest prettily on the design, one landing on the vamp while the other sits closely behind the crystal covered heel, gently brushing the ankle. The elegant design is completed with the globally recognized trademark –  Christian Louboutin red sole.

About Cinderella:

Everyone orders Cinderella around: her cruel stepmother, her awful stepsisters—even the big clock in the church tower tells her when to start another day of drudgery. But they can’t stop her from dreaming, and Cinderella has faith that someday her wishes will come true. When an invitation to the royal ball arrives, Cinderella is sure her time has come—until her stepsisters, with the encouragement of Lady Tremaine, tear her gown to shreds. Just when Cinderella believes all is lost, her Fairy Godmother appears, and with a wave of her wand and “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo,” transforms an ordinary pumpkin into a magnificent coach and Cinderella’s rags into a gorgeous gown, then sends her off to the royal ball. But Cinderella’s enchanted evening must end when the spell is broken at midnight. It will take the help of her daring mice friends and a perfect fit into a glass slipper to create the ultimate fairy tale ending.

About Christian Louboutin:

French designer Christian Louboutin’s red soles have stamped an inimitable mark on the world of fashion and shoe making over the past twenty years. Born in Paris and raised by his mother and three sisters, the designer credits this feminine environment as the inspiration for much of his work.  The innovation and imagination behind Louboutin’s mesmerizing shoes and his utter devotion to women have established him as one of the world’s most visionary and important shoemakers.

About The Walt Disney Studios:
