SeaWorld Orlando New Killer Whale Environment Projects

SeaWorld Orlando Killer Whale Announcement

SeaWorld Announces First-Of-Its-Kind Killer Whale Environment and More Than $10 Million In New Funding For Research and Conservation Projects

SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc. announced today that it plans to build new, first-of-its-kind killer whale environments and that it will fund new programs to protect ocean health and killer whales in the wild. The new projects will build on SeaWorld’s legacy of providing state-of-the-art, innovative homes for its animals, and will offer park guests unique and inspiring killer whale encounters for generations to come. As part of its vision for the future, the company also pledged $10 million in matching funds for killer whale research and is embarking on a multi-million dollar partnership focused on ocean health, the leading concern for all killer whales and marine mammals.

“For 50 years, SeaWorld has transformed how the world views marine life. The unprecedented access to marine mammals that our parks provide has increased our knowledge of the ocean and inspired generations,” said Jim Atchison, Chief Executive Officer and President of SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc. “Our new killer whale homes and research initiatives have just as bold a vision: to advance global understanding of these animals, to educate, and to inspire conservation efforts to protect killer whales in the wild.”

Transformational New Environments

SeaWorld Orlando Killer Whale Announcement

The first of the new environments will be built at SeaWorld San Diego where the killer whale environment is planned to have a total water volume of 10 million gallons, nearly double that of the existing facility. With a planned maximum depth of 50 feet, surface area of nearly 1.5 acres and spanning more than 350 feet in length, the new environment will also have views exceeding 40 feet in height, providing guests with the world’s largest underwater viewing experience of killer whales.

Named the Blue World Project because of its size and scope, the new environment will allow for increased engagement with SeaWorld experts through new enriching experiences and other interactive programs. The environment will enhance the educational experience for guests, foster deeper knowledge of killer whales and their ocean environment and inspire them to celebrate and conserve the natural world.

“Through up-close and personal encounters, the new environment will transform how visitors experience killer whales,” said Atchison. “Our guests will be able to walk alongside the whales as if they were at the shore, watch them interact at the depths found in the ocean, or a birds-eye view from above.”

Expanding on SeaWorld’s legacy of leading-edge animal environment design, the enlarged environment will provide killer whales with even more dynamic opportunities.  It will support the whales’ broad range of behaviors and provide choices that can challenge the whales both physically and mentally.  Among other things, it is planned to include a “fast water current” that allows whales to swim against moving water, thus functionally increasing speed and diversity. Innovative features focused on husbandry and animal care will offer SeaWorld’s animal health professionals and independent scientists unique access to the whales that can lead to a better understanding and care of the animals both in the parks and in the wild.

The San Diego environment is expected to open to the public in 2018 with new killer whale homes to follow at SeaWorld Orlando and SeaWorld San Antonio.

“SeaWorld’s capital investment will create a significant number of new jobs in our community and help drive the economy when construction begins at the Orlando park. Beyond that, it will enhance tourism by providing a state-of-the-art experience for visitors while providing valuable new research and educational opportunities in animal health and behavior,” said Representative Daniel Webster (FL-10).

Killer Whale Research

As part of the Blue World Project, SeaWorld has committed $10 million in matching funds focused on threats to killer whales in the wild, especially those identified by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration related to the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whale.  That includes new projects already funded this year: one that will help to understand the hearing ranges of killer whales and the other that will provide insight into nutritional status and reproduction of the Southern Resident Killer Whale.  The matching funds will be in addition to killer whale research conducted by SeaWorld’s scientists, which includes nearly 50 studies to date.

Recognizing that ocean health is a leading concern for killer whales and all marine mammals in the wild, the company also announced it will be embarking on a major multi-million dollar partnership focused on protecting the ocean.  More details of the partnership will be announced in the coming weeks.

Advisory Panel

SeaWorld will also engage an Independent Advisory Panel to bring new perspectives and ideas to the project. The panel will focus on the creation of an environment that maximizes the health and wellbeing of the animals. Given the particular expertise of current panelists and those expected to join, the panel will further advise on integrated research projects that can be conducted within the new environment and foster partnerships within the science and academic communities working in the wild.

Current Advisory Panel members include:

  • Dr. Paul Boyle, Senior Vice President for Conservation and Education, Association of Zoos & Aquariums
  • Dr. Heidi Harley, Professor of Psychology, New College of Florida
  • Dr. Dorian Houser, Director of Conservation and Biological Research, National Marine Mammal Foundation
  • Dr. Linda Lowenstein, Professor Emeritus Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, University of California Davis School of Veterinary Medicine
  • Dr. Shawn Noren, Associate Research Scientist, Institute of Marine Science, University of California Santa Cruz
  • Mr. Tom Otten, Chief Executive Officer, Reef Experience
  • Dr. James F.  Peddie, DVM, Distinguished Faculty Chair, Exotic Animal Training and Management Program, Moorpark College
  • Dr. Paul Ponganis, Research Physiologist, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
  • Dr. Kwane Stewart, Chief Veterinary Officer and National Director, Film and Television Unit, American Humane Association
  • Dr. Pam Yochem, Senior Research Scientist and Executive Vice President, Research, Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute

“Like so many others in science and industry, we are constantly learning more about how we can evolve our knowledge and continue to learn more about these amazing animals and stewardship of those in the wild,” Atchison said. “We look forward to working with these experts to build on these learnings and achieve our vision of increased knowledge of killer whales and global efforts to protect those in the wild.”

Polynesian Resort Photo Update

Yesterday I had the chance to walk around Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort for the first time since construction started earlier this year. While I was waiting for my ‘Ohana reservation time to roll around, I took a few minutes to stroll around the resort. Since Captain Cook’s just opened on Wednesday, I thought I’d share the pictures of the newly refurbished counter service location as well as some general construction photos from around the Polynesian.

This was my first chance at seeing the construction walls around the lobby in the Great Ceremonial House. While it did make me sad to no longer be able to see the beautiful water feature, I have to admit the walls looked better than I expected. From what I understand though, they have been recently updated to their current state. The walls surround most of the lobby area that was previously occupied by the aforementioned water feature and wrap around to the entrance to Boutiki on the other side. Concept art of the way the finished lobby will look adorn the walls along with several photo ops with Disney characters in Polynesian outfits.

I like the refresh of Captain Cook’s quite a bit. There is new flooring, furniture and artwork throughout with a nice updated Polynesian vibe. Although I was sad when I saw the cooler that is now storing cupcakes where the dole whip machine was housed previously, I do look forward to when the new Pineapple Lanai dole whip kiosk opens up either later this year or beginning of next year at the Polynesian. I also took a moment to lament the loss of the grown up grilled cheese sandwich from the lunch and dinner menus. The food and beverage manager I spoke with suggested emailing guest services to express the desire to have the sandwich added back on the menu. I liked the sound of some of the new menu items and look forward to trying them out sometime soon. One of my favorite things about the refurb is the set of posters around the restaurant named after the different longhouses.

After I finished breakfast, my family and I decided to go check out the construction of the Polynesian bungalows down by the beach. The work is coming along pretty well, with siding and windows in and even some painting being done. It was cool to see this up close for the first time in person. The last time I saw the buildings, they were mostly plywood boxes that just had the roof lowered on to them. I cannot wait to see these and how they turn out next year. The progress is very noticeable from the bungalows closest to the beach being the furthest along and seeing the different levels of work being done from one to the next.

Have you been by the Polynesian Village Resort recently? Have you had the chance to try any of the new menu items at Captain Cook’s yet? If not, what are you most looking forward to trying there? Let me know.

Treviso Restaurant at the Ringling Museum

10602892_10152573235175837_293550673_nRecently I found myself at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota and took the opportunity to dine at one of their restaurants, Treviso. Situated in the welcome center at the museum, Treviso features primarily Italian inspired fare. The restaurant is open for lunch daily in the summer from 11am – 3:30pm and for dinner Thursday – Saturday from 4:30 – 8pm.

While I was waiting for the rest of my party to arrive, I opted to have a late lunch at the restaurant I’d passed by on many previous visits. I was very glad to take the time relaxing after having spent several hours in the museum already. I arrived around 2pm and took a look at the menu finding myself curious about the soup and sandwich combo. Apparently this was a popular idea because Treviso was already out of the stacked sandwich that made up half of the combo. The chicken and sausage gumbo sounded good, but I didn’t want to get it on its own, however other diners said it was very good.

I chose something on the menu that intrigued me and wasn’t something I’ve often seen elsewhere. The Modena Pizza is a flatbread pizza with gorgonzola, balsamic vinegar, roasted pears, mozzarella and caramelized onions. Since I was solo, I sat at the bar where service was prompt and attentive. The pizza was very good with a really nice balance between the savory flavor of the mild cheeses and the sweetness of the pears, onions and balsamic. To balance it out a bit more I decided to add a glass of a nice dry prosecco to my meal. It was a perfect pairing.

If you get a chance to check out Treviso at the Ringling, I highly recommend it and I can’t wait to get back here on my next visit. Have you been to the Ringling or Treviso? What did you think?

First Founding Members Custom Rewards Program of its kind in Orlando Pro Sports

The number 21 is prevalent throughout pop culture.  From the winning hand in Black Jack, to a biblical number of perfection, to one that our fans certainly enjoy – the legal drinking age, the number 21 has played a major role in our society.

It also has very deep meaning for Orlando City.  The Lions were selected as the 21st expansion team in Major League Soccer – a noteworthy milestone raucously celebrated by thousands.  There are 21 sun flares encircling the lion’s mane on City’s MLS logo.  And, City’s 2015 MLS debut at the Orlando Citrus Bowl will mark 21 years since the stadium hosted the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

To build upon this numerical significance, Orlando City Soccer Club Founder and President Phil Rawlins unveiled the details of Society XXI (Twenty One), the first founding season ticket member custom rewards program of its kind in Central Florida professional sports.

Society XXI membership is automatically extended to current 2015 season ticket holders at no additional cost.  Future Season Ticket Members will also be enrolled in Society XXI at no cost, but space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

As founding members of the MLS’ 21st team, Society XXI members will receive a custom Society XXI Orlando City Scarf, and beginning on September 2, 2014, will be able to select a special one-time benefit from a list of 21 including:

  •    A private stadium tour

  •    Access to exclusive training sessions
  •    Pre-game warm-ups on the field
  •    Lunch with City coaching staff
  •    Complimentary Orlando City Youth Soccer session
  •    And many others…

“The Lions boast the best fans in the City Beautiful and we’re proud to showcase this program that rewards their loyalty by providing unprecedented access and experiences unlike any other professional sports team in the market,” said Rawlins.

Current and future members of Society XXI can select one of these 21 experiences online at www.OrlandoCitySC.com/society. To purchase season tickets, visit www.OrlandoCitySC.com or call 855-ORL-CITY.

“These options will go fast so we encourage fans to act quickly and register for the September 2nd deadline to secure their preferred reward.  Society XXI is a once-in-a-life-time opportunity.  We only debut in the MLS once so we want our most loyal fans who joined us from the start to experience something special as we usher a new era in the ‘Soccer Capital of the South.’ ”

In future years, all renewing Society XXI members will receive an annual exclusive benefit.

Over the course of the next 21 days, Orlando City will embark on a campaign recognizing current Society XXI members, as well as revisiting some of the most memorable events in the Club’s history and highlighting Society XXI experiences that will be available for selection on September 2.

Radley Haunted House Offers Intense And Exclusive Experience

Radley Haunted House 2014

Radley Haunted House becomes even more intense with a one night experience that will test even the bravest of Halloween fans.

Dr. Radley’s Nightmare Machine is the name of the previously announced new haunt that will entertain hundreds this October for 15 nights.  But for just one night, it will become Dr. Radley’s Sleep Sessions – the ultimate extreme haunted attraction.

Unlike the regular haunted house walkthrough, which will last roughly 5 minutes keeping guests flowing constantly through multiple rooms, Dr. Radley’s Sleep Sessions is a much more personal experience.  Lasting roughly 30 minutes, this extreme event will target up to 4 visitors at a time and will provide up-close encounters like nothing Central Florida has seen before.

The number one rule of haunted attractions is generally, “You don’t touch the actors and the actors won’t touch you.”  But in Dr. Radley’s Sleep Sessions, you take on a starring role in a very special production that most definitely involves physical contact.  You won’t be harmed in any way – except perhaps psychologically after braving this unique experience.

Radley Haunted House Sleep Experience
Inspired by extreme haunts like Blackout, McKamey Manor, and The ScareHouse’s Basement, Dr. Radley’s Sleep Sessions is an almost-anything-goes experience that will leave you speechless, breathless, and witless.

And only a very limited number of horror fans will get the chance to experience it first hand.

To reserve one of the very limited spots, select the appropriate reward on the Radley Kickstarter project and contribute.  These contributions are not only paying for the one night Sleep Sessions experience, but also donating to help  create the nightly Radley Haunted House.

Dr. Radley’s Sleep Sessions will take place on the evening of October 22, 2014.  The Kickstarter contribution includes admission for up to four people in a group for the special event.  All participants must be at least 18 years old and will be required to sign a waiver.

Visit www.RadleyHaunt.com for more information.

ABOUT THE RADLEY HAUNTED HOUSE
For several years, the Radley Haunted House has stood out among the finest independent haunted attractions in Central Florida.  Often compared to the quality of Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights and Busch Gardens Tampa’s Howl-O-Scream, Radley never fails to impress with its immersive environments, eerie ambiance, and startling scares.

But this is no professional haunt.  The Radley Haunted House is the creation of artist Cody Meacham, who completely reinvents the experience each year, carrying the storyline of the Radley family across each Halloween season, revealing new details over time all while entertaining hundreds of guests each night.  It all takes place within the confines of Meacham’s home.

An Introduction To Diagon Alley At Universal Orlando Resort

DISCLOSURE: I was an invited guest of the Universal Orlando Resort, and I was provided with admission, lodging, and promotional items for sharing my opinions, experiences, and thoughts.

An Introduction To Diagon Alley

At The Universal Orlando Resort

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley has been open at the Universal Orlando Resort for a short bit of time, and I was lucky enough to have a few days to take a a look at this amazing new area as an invited guest of the Resort!

Diagon Alley Universal Orlando

In Diagon Alley you can dine at the Leaky Cauldron, watch as the wand chooses the wizard at Ollivanders, see some amazing Wizards perform, shop for wizarding supplies, and more as you walk in the footsteps of Harry Potter in his Wizarding World.

So let’s see if I remember this correctly…Three up…two across…

Welcome to Diagon Alley!

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts

Height Requirement: 42 inches

Diagon Alley Introduction Universal Orlando

While all of Diagon Alley is stunning, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts is truly the area’s crown jewel!

As you approach Gringotts Bank, you are greeted by a 60ft, seven-ton, fire-breathing Ukrainian Ironbelly dragon who breathes fire every 15 minutes!

Inside the archway, you walk through the bank’s grand marble lobby and see several goblins hard at work.

Then you grab a pair of 3D glasses for your journey through cavernous passageways that lead deep underground as you climb aboard the mine trains of Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts.

You’ll encounter Harry, Ron, and Hermione along the way, but you’ll have to evade the wrath of malicious villains Voldemort and Bellatrix as well as trolls and other creatures who stand between you and a safe return to Diagon Alley.

The Hogwarts Express

If you have a Park-to-Park admission ticket, you can pass through Platform 9 ¾ and board the Hogwarts Express from King’s Cross Station in London, located inside Universal Studios Florida theme park, and travel to Hogsmeade Station, located inside Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park (right next door to Universal Studios). Or you can ride the train in the other direction!

This is the  first time that Muggles have been allowed to board the Hogwarts Express, and it was quite the amazing trip!

Orlando City SC Falls to Harrisburg

After a Relentless Second Half Assault,

Orlando City SC Falls to Harrisburg 3-2

The Orlando City SC Lions went on the road without two key starters, Darwin Cerén and Luke Boden, due to suspensions, to face the Harrisburg City Islanders (8-8-6, 30 points), a team who recently lost only one game in their last seven and rode a three-game win streak heading into tonight’s match.

Nonetheless, Orlando City SC (15-2-4, 49 points) was coming off a convincing win over Charlotte, becoming the first team to secure a playoff berth in the USL PRO for 2014.  Unfortunately, despite a valiant last half offensive charge, the Lions lost 3-2 tonight at Skyline Sports Complex.

City dominated most of possession and dictated the pace of play early in the game.  The offense created a number of chances with some great runs toward the net, resulting in a couple of early corner kicks and set plays.

Orlando’s best chance came in the 16th minute as Dennis Chin cleverly chested a ball into the path of a charging Kevin Molino.  The Trinidadian fired a shot, forcing a spectacular save from Nicholas Noble to keep the Lions off the score sheet.

Lady luck however, turned her back.  After receiving a free kick outside the penalty box, Harrisburg’s Derschang curled an unstoppable shot into the upper 90 beyond an outstretched Gallardo in the 20th minute.  In the 29th minute, Antoine Hoppenot was tackled by Adama Mbengue just inside the penalty area, and the Islanders were awarded a penalty shot.  Derschang converted to post a brace for the match.

The early part of the second half was just as challenging.  Following a missed penalty kick by Hoppenot in the 46th minute, he found the back of the net by sliding a ball past Gallardo in the 53rd minute for Harrisburg’s final tally of the match.

After a few key substitutions by Head Coach Adrian Heath, the Lions’ intensity notably increased as the team built solid plays, made good runs into space and opened scoring opportunities in the Islanders’ defense.  In the 81st minute, Molino added to his league scoring title chase by redirecting a crossed header from Justin Clark into the back of the net.  Six minutes later, Mbengue slid a precise line to Giusepe Gentile – who found the net for the first time as a Lion since joining the team in July.

Commenting on the performance after the match, Coach Heath said, “It started slowly and in difficult conditions for both teams.  I thought they wanted to win the game more than we did and (our effort) was too little too late.  The last two or three weeks, our away form has been very concerning.  We’ll have to improve it if we want to do what we want to achieve.  Otherwise it will be a big disappointment.”

SPECIAL NOTE: Prior to the match, The Harrisburg City Islanders organization held a special presentation with OCSC Head Coach Adrian Heath, recognizing the longstanding relationship between the clubs and Orlando City’s move to the MLS in 2015.

NEXT Match: Orlando City will face Harrisburg City Islanders at the ESPN Wide World of Sports on August 16 at 7:30 pm ET.

The Hundred-Foot Journey Is Simply Delightful

Hundred-Foot-Journey

It’s fun when a story that is well off my radar becomes a movie and it ends up being both delightful and enjoyable to watch.  The Hundred-Foot Journey is definitely one such movie.  It is the story of an Indian family that is displaced from their home due to political unrest.  As such they begin a journey through Europe to find a new home.  After a near death experience the family inadvertently finds that home in a town in the French countryside.  The family patriarch “Papa”, played by Om Puri, becomes enamored with and purchases a dilapidated restaurant for his family to start anew.

The fundamental problem is this restaurant is across the street from a high class French restaurant operated by Madame Mallory, played by Helen Mirren.  A mere 100 feet from door to door.  She is not amused by this at all, and a feud begins between the two restaurants.  However, that’s hardly the grand sum total of the movie.  Instead it becomes something so much more… in a very unencumbered way that really helps to make this shine.

At the core of the movie is the story of Papa’s son Hassan.  From a young age Hassan was trained by his mother to be a chef.  His true passion for the works is shown throughout the movie.  Early on in the movie this is shown through his tasting of some raw sea urchin, and again later in a scene involving an omelet.  Along the way he meets and falls in love with a woman, Marguerite, who also happens to work for Madame Mallory.

Much of this might all seem like spoilers, but really this movie doesn’t hold a lot of surprises.  That is not to say that it’s predictable, but it has no sudden turns or suspenseful moments.  As the story about the survival, growth, and evolution of this family are portrayed on the screen it’s very easy to be drawn in.  Though initially the characters seem a little over the top, as time goes on you realize that’s by design.  Over time it helps drive them toward a more realistic feel.

I’m entirely sure as to the appeal of this movie across a wide range of audiences.  It’s definitely not a movie made for children.  Much of the theater goers were of the “Above 50” crowd.  That’s not a bad thing at all, not all movies are for everyone.  As I said I found this movie to be both unexpected and enjoyable.  If it seems at all interesting to you, it’s worth going to see.  My one concern is the choice of release date – it doesn’t feel like a summer movie and would probably have been better served being released in the fall.
