Patrick Lyons, the King of Boston’s nightlife scene, is bringing his upscale bowling entertainment venue, KINGS, to Orlando. Lyons, along with Robert and Tricia Earl, announced today that they are hosting BOWL-ERINA, a night of fun and friends, to celebrate the grand opening of KINGS with all proceeds from the evening benefitting the Orlando Ballet.

KINGS, “A Classy Bowling Joint,” boasts an authentic 60’s midcentury feeling and design, combined with craft beers, cocktails, great food, music and games including 22 lanes, billiards, shuffle board and bocce all housed within a 30,000-square-foot space. We LOVE Drip!!!

A few weeks ago when a Co-Worker of mine was talking about a new show in Orlando that involved Paint and Water and Sand and Dance, and Music I KNEW I had to find out more about this new performance art venue called Drip!

I was still curious, so I went to their website for more information and this is how they describe themselves:

DRIP is an in-your-face explosion of color and movement backed by a live rock band, all in an industrial dive bar. You may get wet … you may get messy … you WILL have an awesome time. Grab a colored beer (orange, yellow, red or blue!) or glass of wine from our bar and let us assault your senses.

Drip

I had no idea how true any of that was until the show started.

When you walk into Drip, all you see is black walls, a few tables, and a long bar but at first it seemed like it was pretty sparse space. But as you start to explore you see there is also a paint bar for anyone who is into doing some body or face painting, where each color means something and you can go as heavy or as minimal as you want! At the bar you can get colored beer, wine, and soft drinks. There is also a DJ set up at a table towards the back of the bar area. As the show was getting close to starting, there are lots of people milling around in festive colors and knee socks and body paint!

Then all of a sudden the show starts, and you don’t even realize that it is until the first cup of blue beer goes flying! I don’t want to ruin the experience, so I will only say that if you like music, beer, dance, and art, Drip is TOTALLY the place for you!

Drip

Drip is probably one of the most unique things I have done in a while, and I loved every minute of it. I loved the heavy drum and bass music, I loved the paint. I LOVED the drama and I loved the action.

As with all DRIP events, people are strongly urged to dress down (jeans, t-shirts, sneakers) as colored sand, paint, and other media fly with abandon.

I LOVED our time at Drip and plan on going back very soon! I plan on planning my outfit a bit better so I have a show memento to take with me :P.

Drip

Thank You to Mariko, Jessica and Frank with Drip for making sure that Shelley, Shalon and I had an amazing time.

This is NOT a show you want to miss! Grab some friends, grab a white tshirt, grab a baggie for your phone (GREAT TIP SHALON), and head to Drip Orlando!

Beth’s Aerial Adventure!

I recently had the opportunity to attend an Aerial silk dance class at Northwest Dance Studio in Orlando.  The moment I heard about the class, I said sign me up because when will I ever get the opportunity to do this again.

Aerial

First a little background on the studio. The studio, directed by Sarah Swindell, opened in 2005 and strives to provide not only dance training but also instill self esteem and confidence in its students.  It is focused on reaching out to students in the nearby community and offers them opportunities they otherwise would not be exposed to due to financial or other similar hindrances.  Classes offered include ballet, contemporary, hip-hop, aerial silks and more and are open to all ages and abilities.  The studio is also home to the Northwest Dance Company which offers the serious student performance opportunities throughout the year.  Students learn not only dance and performance technique, but also learn about lighting, music, and stage production.

Aerial

As I said earlier, as soon as I heard about the aerial silks class, I couldn’t wait to try it.  After some stretching and Pilates, our instructor, Sarah, demonstrated the first skill we would learn.  She showed us a single leg wrap and how you use it to climb the silk.  Of course she made it look extremely easy as she climbed the silk to the top, extended her legs, and then descended quickly and smoothly.  The other ladies and I couldn’t wait to try.  But oh were we in for a surprise!  It’s hard!  I quickly discovered that aerial silk dance uses nearly every muscle, even ones you won’t be aware of until the following morning.  It requires leg strength, upper body strength, core strength, and even uses the tiny muscles in the fingers and toes.  I attempted a back walk over with the silk but need more practice to master that one.  The last skill I learned involved tying a knot in the silk that supports the low back.  I lay back on the knot and then flipped my hips in a straddle position over my head so that I was upside down.  It was very fun and actually stretched out my back muscles.  When executed properly, aerial silk dancing is very graceful and elegant.  Not sure I’ll ever be ready for Cirque du Soleil but I had a great time trying out something new and I definitely have a new appreciation for how hard these dancers work yet look effortless doing it.

Aerial

Be sure to check out the Northwest Dance Company’s latest production Maggie, based loosely on the ancient story of Mary Magdalene, featuring aerial skills, contemporary and ballet choreographed to the sounds of an all-original soundtrack.  Performances will be held in the Northwest Church Auditorium, 5495 Clarcona-Ocoee Road in Orlando, on Friday March 29, 2013 at 7 P.M. and Sunday March 31 at 9 and 10:30 A.M. and 12 noon.  Admission is free and seating is first come, first served.  Call the studio for more information regarding this performance and classes for children and adults at 407-490-3345 and visit them at Facebook.com/NorthwestDanceStudio or their website at www.NWDanceOrlando.com.

Coming Soon: MegaCon 2013

megacon

In a bit more than a week from now I’ll be attending MegaCon – one of the more popular Science Fiction and Fantasy conventions to regularly visit the Orlando, Florida area – will start.  It will be held in Hall D of the Orange County Convention Center (directions).  It will be held on March 15th through 17th and the hours are as follows:

Fri Mar 15th : 1pm – 7pm
Sat Mar 16th : 10am – 6pm
Sun Mar 17th : 10am – 5pm

Adult ticket prices at the door will be $30 for a single day or $60 for all three days, and children 10 and under get in for free with an adult.  Advance tickets can be purchased online or over the phone.  Parking will be $9 per day ($15 for oversized vehicles).

There are numerous Media Guests attending this years convention, but the big draw this year is a special Star Trek: The Next Generation reunion event.  There is an additional cost for this event, but there is still seating available.  Additionally there will be numerous chances to get signatures from various celebrity attendees.  To guarantee a signature you can pre-buy tickets.

This isn’t just a convention about Star Trek, television, or movie guests.  It’s also a comic book convention, and as a result many comic book guests will be available to meet as well.  The most famous of which is the renowned Neal Adams.  The convention will also have Anime Guests, Video Gaming, other Gaming, and numerous panels to choose from throughout the day.  And don’t forget the ever popular convention exclusives and the showroom floor exhibitors.

I’m excited to attend.  My favorite part of conventions is always the showroom floor.  Checking out the myriad items of memorabilia, and trinkets you can find while wandering around.  I find it fun to see them, and very often unique one of a kind items can be found.  It’s like hunting for treasure.  Not to mention the costumes.  There are some very creative people in this world who are capable of amazing costumes and conventions are their only outlet for showing them off.  If you see me there don’t hesitate to say, “Hi.”

KINGS Bowl Orlando Scheduled To Open April 15

Kings Orlando is International Drive’s Newest Hot Spot for Fun

KINGS Bowl

KINGS Bowl Orlando Scheduled To Open April 15

30,000-Square-Foot Dining, Bowling and Entertainment Venue Features 22 Ten-Pin Bowling Lanes, Full-Service Upscale Restaurant, 60 Big Screen TVs and State-of-the-Art Sound System

KINGS Bowl, the Boston-based, dining, bowling and entertainment venue that pioneered the upscale bowling revolution in 2003, is scheduled to open its first Florida location on April 15, 2013 in the “I-Drive Live” project on Orlando’s world-famous corridor, International Drive.

KINGS first opened its doors in 2003 in the heart of Boston’s historic Back Bay. KINGS’ goal was to focus on recapturing and rekindling the fun and escape of bowling which had faded since its heyday. The 1950’s and 1960’s are considered to be the golden age of bowling and KINGS’ award-winning design and décor captures this nostalgic feeling, while adding modern twists. From the start, KINGS set out to create a unique and memorable entertainment experience by emphasizing world-class food, cold beer, creative cocktails, cutting edge technology and great music. The focus is on classic, retro-inspired décor and executive chef-designed menus brought to life by best-in-industry service. In doing so, KINGS sparked the modern day bowling renaissance and carved a name for itself as the original upscale bowling venue, which has revitalized the sport across America.

KINGS Orlando will offer a first-class dining and entertainment experience unlike any other along International Drive or in Central Florida. In addition to 22 ten-pin bowling lanes, KINGS will offer four full-sized billiards tables, a regulation-sized shuffleboard table, a full outdoor bocce ball court (one of only a few in the area), weekend disc jockeys, dancing and much more. Beer enthusiasts who have dreamed of tending bar will take great delight in innovative and engaging tables fitted with beer taps where they can pour the perfect pint at their own pace.  KINGS Orlando will be further differentiated by transforming into an adults-only experience after dark. By day, families with children can bowl and savor homemade ice cream and other treats. At 6 p.m, general public admission moves to adults only, ages 21 and above.

“This isn’t your dad’s bowling alley; it’s an upscale bowling joint,” says Patrick Lyons, president and founder of the Lyons Group and KINGS Bowl America. “Bowling has always been a great social sport and Kings has reinvented the experience for a new generation. Serious ten-pin athletes will relish our ultramodern lanes and roomy player accommodations, while even the most ‘gutter-prone’ will appreciate our chef’s delicious fare and our thoughtful menu of craft beers and signature cocktails.” The Lyons Group leadership team is backed by more than 100 years of combined entertainment industry experience with a track record of innovation and success. The group is credited with re-energizing Boston’s nightlife scene over three decades with more than 30 dining, nightclub and entertainment venues in its growing portfolio.

Concourse Lanes

From the moment they set foot inside KINGS, guests will know that they are in for an experience unlike any other. A hip, retro-inspired vibe and grooving soundtrack will greet them as they navigate between a friendly evening at the lanes, great food in the restaurant and socializing in KINGS’ lounge bar that translates to an open, climate controlled outdoor café experience on the stylish, full-service patio. Committed sports fans can catch all of the action at KINGS’ massive sports bar boasting 60 HDTVs and projectors and a real-time sports ticker. Guests can also take in the scene on the energetic concourse catching all the action happening throughout the expansive facility.

The idea of bowling alley food as an afterthought is tossed in the gutter at KINGS; everything is

carefully crafted, made fresh and delivered daily. The full-service KINGS restaurant will serve an impressive, executive chef-designed menu of American favorites and delicious comfort food. Appetizers include unique, modern plays on classic bar fare, such as cheeseburger spring rolls, perfectly fried mac & cheese bites and homemade buffalo chicken wontons. Entrees are highlighted by house-smoked baby back ribs, juicy and creative burgers and KINGS’ signature, tender, award-winning steak tips. Diners will finish their meal with a taste of sweet nostalgia from the built-in Ice Cream Shoppe featuring creative sundaes and delicious homemade desserts. The impressive menu is served throughout the entire facility until close seven days a week.

“I look at every dish on the menu and I think of ways to exceed expectations by sourcing only the finest ingredients and adding a ‘kick’ to every dish,” says Executive Chef Andre Bautista. “We pride ourselves on everything being made from scratch, in-house daily and making sure that each and every plate has a ‘wow-factor’.” KINGS Bowl

In addition to the food and entertainment, KINGS is well-known for its special events and parties. The venue will boast multiple jaw-dropping private bowling and meeting spaces complimented by state-of-the-art audio and visual capabilities. Two meeting rooms can be made completely private and can accommodate up to 100 and 200 people, respectively. Party goers can bowl while enjoying an assortment of upscale culinary delights served right to the lanes, as well as best-in-industry service that has already made KINGS a repeat destination for so many in Boston and Chicago. Birthdays, bachelor and bachelorette parties, kids’ parties, and corporate and team building parties are all made memorable with the unique combination of entertainment, great food and unforgettable service.

KINGS is committed to being an actively engaged member of the Orlando community and has pledged to work with community-based initiatives in an effort to raise money through “fun-raisers” and in-kind donations. KINGS has already made a philanthropic name in its markets, having hosted and raised millions for local charities attended by the likes of popular celebrities and athletes including former and current NBA stars Shaquille O’Neal, Glen “Big Baby” Davis, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen, Patriots Tom Brady, Wes Welker and Jerod Mayo, Bears captain Charles Tillman, and BC and NFL legend Doug Flutie. KINGS will immediately look to make a similar impact in the Orlando area. Other famous guests at KINGS include Lady Gaga, Adam Sandler, Seth MacFarlane, Mark Wahlberg and many more of music and Hollywood’s finest.

KINGS will also assure that local residents and members of the Orlando hospitality industry are treated like royalty on the traditionally tourist-heavy International Drive. From opening, they will receive a free loyalty card that will provide the benefits of seasonally rotated, exclusive specials and discounts. Locals will also appreciate free surface parking in 600 adjacent available spaces and easy access via Universal Boulevard. KINGS has also planned a private opening party to offer an exclusive reveal of the venue to Orlando residents and hospitality industry members.

Jewels Of The Titanic Exhibit

As you know, us ladies here at On The Go LOVE things that are shiny and blingy!!!! So when one of our most favorite venues The Titanic Experience announced that they had a Jewels of the Titanic Exhibit coming to town, we KNEW we had to go!

Jewels of the Titanic

Premier Exhibitions Inc is doing a three-city tour that started in Atlanta, Ga and ends in Las Vegas, NV running until May 31, 2013. It is here in Orlando from January 11- March 12. The collection bodes 15 of the most beautiful pieces of jewelry that were actually found on one of the first dives to the Titanic site. Diamonds, Sapphires, pearls and gold pieces that actually belonged to one of Titanic’s wealthiest passengers.

Jewels of the Titanic

When guest boarded Titanic, they sent many of their most valuable items (Jewels, Money, Books, Paintings) to the Purser’s office which would hold all the expensive items in one place. They received claim receipts for pick up when Titanic would dock. It was explained to us by Mark Lach, who is the Titanic: the Artifacts Exhibition Creative Director that the guest who had valuables in The Purser’s office, once Titanic hit the ice berg, immediately went to retrieve their items and they were put into leather Gladstone bag, which were locked into safes and moved out to the lifeboats with the passengers.

Nobody is quite sure of the events after that but many pieces of the jewelry sank with the ship and are on display today. in 1987 when the team recovered a Gladstone bag from the wreckage site it contained, jewelry, bank notes, gold sovereigns and gold watches! Because the Gladstone bags were handmade, the chemicals that were used in the tanning process of the leather SAVED the currency notes and protected the rest of the belongings.

Also, just an FYI, the INFAMOUS Heart of the Ocean that was features in James Cameron’s Titanic, was fictional and never actually on board Titanic. But they do sell a replica at Titanic The Exhibit if you should feel the need to reenact any moment of the movie.

Thank you to Krystin of ThisIsPress.com for inviting us and as always, treating us like Royalty!

Roccos Tacos – A Mexican Restaurant With Flair

Roccos Tacos
Roccos Tacos

Roccos Tacos and Tequila Bar is a fabulous new restaurant located on West Sand Lake Road in Orlando. The decor is very eclectic and representative of what one would find in the tequila region of Mexico.  There are beautiful star shaped chandeliers as well as masks of all shapes and sizes along the walls.  The restaurant houses three bars, one outside as you approach the front door, another just inside the main entrance, and a third which opens to the outdoor patio situated with a charming lake view.  Starting at 9 PM nightly, a live DJ plays a variety of upbeat music, setting a fun and party like atmosphere.  The dress code is casual while maintaining a hip and trendy vibe. It’s a family friendly environment but can get very loud so take that into consideration with young children. Dining reservations can be made by phone and walk-ups are taken as well.  There is complimentary valet which is recommended due to the limited availability of parking.

Enough logistics, let’s discuss the food!  It’s delicious! The menu can be described as upscale Mexican cuisine with a variety of choices.  One of the house specialties is the guacamole prepared tableside. Eaten with the house made tortilla chips, it’s almost a meal in itself.  Another great appetizer choice is the Queso Fundido Con Chorizo, which is simply a casserole of cheese, Chili’s, and chorizo sausage baked in an iron skillet and served with flour tortillas.  There are a variety of other appetizers to choose from, but be sure to save room for the main course!

Rocco’s offers an array of entree choices including salads, enchiladas, burritos, chimichangas, and combination plates. Within our group, we had the California fish tacos, the chimichanga Nationale, and the carne asada soft tacos.  The fish tacos are filled with fried mahi mahi, served with cabbage slaw and avocado ranch, and come with rice and beans for $17.  The chimichanga is made with a spicy chicken, also served with rice and beans, and is $13.  The carne asada, or grilled skirt steak, tacos were $4.50 each. Speaking of tacos, Tuesday’s are a great time to visit for Taco Tuesdays.  For $14.95, it’s all you can eat tacos, in any combination of chicken, pork, spicy beef, steak, mahi, shrimp, chorizo and mushrooms.  You can choose from hard or soft shell tacos and all are served with taco sauce, lettuce, pico de gallo, cilantro, pickled red onions and cotija cheese.  The shrimp, mahi, and steak seemed to be the most popular. Rocco’s Tacos also has offerings for kids including chicken fingers, pasta, quesadillas, and hot dogs.

The bar at Rocco’s serves everything from tequila and margaritas to sangria, beer and wine. They have 225 varieties of tequila ranging in price from $6 to $85.  The flavored margaritas are not to be missed including pomegranate, mango, and blood orange.  When owner Rocco Mangel is in the restaurant, he can be found on the bar in his white platform shoes pouring free Patron to the sounds of the song “Tequila!” A great non-alcoholic treat is the “REAL” Coca Cola made with real sugar cane in Mexico.

Rocco’s Tacos is a great place to go to hang out with friends, grab a drink, enjoy a meal, or bring the whole family. They serve lunch, dinner, and have a limited late night menu along with a full bar during all business hours.  The atmosphere and service are top notch as is the quality of the food and drinks.  Be sure to check out the newest location in Orlando or try one of the other four locations in South Florida.  Visit their website at www.RoccosTacos.com, friend them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter.

Pammie’s Sammies Grand-ReOpening!

Pammie's Sammies
Pammie’s Sammies
5907 Turkey Lake Road, Suite 100
Orlando, Florida 32819

I got the chance to swing by the Grand ReOpening of Pammies’ Sammies, located near the Universal Orlando Resort, and I have to say it was super yummy and a great place to just kick back and have a nice meal with friends or family.

Pammie’s Sammies is a family owned cafe that prides itself on being thoughtfully sourced, earth friendly and tastefully adventurous. Pam Thomas, the proprietor, puts an innovative spin on classic sandwiches (“sammies”), burgers, BBQ, soups and salads. As part of the grand reopening, Pammie’s Sammies has expanded to include a craft beer and wine bar and will now serve happy hour bar bites and dinner entrees in addition to their original breakfast and lunch offerings.

While the food is absolutely delicious, their Cuban was my favorite and Zoe has been asking for more brownies, it is Pam herself that really creates an atmosphere of fun and hospitality that makes you feel like you are a friend just dropping in for a bite to eat.

And when I say it’s located near the Universal Orlando Resort, I mean you can SEE Universal Studios Florida from there windows, which make it an ideal place to stop before or after heading into the parks.

If you are looking for an affordable, fun, and delicious place to grab a great Sammie, I would definitely suggest heading over to Pammie’s Sammies!
