Wreck-It Ralph Available on Disney Blu-Ray!

Wreck-It Ralph

Daddy’s Movie Day: Wreck-It Ralph

Finally after many months of anticipation, Disney has finally released their blockbuster animated film Wreck-It Ralph on DVD and Blu –Ray.  Ralph and his fellow inhabitants of the arcade come to life to tell the story of the Bad Guy who isn’t a “Bad Guy”…

Ever since I saw Wreck-It Ralph in the theater the first time, I have wanted to see it again.  I grew up in the golden age of arcade games, so I saw many familiar faces in Ralph’s world.  It was great to see all of the painstaking detail the director and animators took to incorporate all of these classic elements.  When we received the DVD, I was excited to be able to watch it over multiple times to see all of the little elements that I missed when I saw it in the theater.  As nice as it was, I really didn’t have a choice.  The real ruler of the DVD play, and sometimes the house, my daughter Zoe insisted on watching it many times the first day we got it.  I didn’t put up much of a fight as I wanted to watch it too, and once again it didn’t disappoint.

Wreck-It Ralph is a wonderful story about a Bad Guy who just wants to be accepted.  It is wonderfully written and directed, incorporating comedy, action, drama, and a heartwarming story of friendship and overcoming the odds.

The Blu-Ray is full of great extras that we loved exploring.  The favorite in our house was the pause screens 12 different segments showing all of the hidden gems in the background of the movie.

In my opinion, Wreck-It Ralph is the best movie Disney has put out in a number of years, and I highly recommend it to anyone young or old.

Peter Pan Diamond Edition – Neverland Like You’ve Never Seen It Before

Peter Pan Diamond EditionDaddy’s Movie Day: Peter Pan Diamond Edition

This year out of the Disney vault comes the animated classic of the boy who never grew up. Sixty years after its original release, Disney has given us The Peter Pan Diamond Edition. This digitally remastered version breathes new life into the classic story and colorful characters while adding enough additional content to entice those all too familiar with the movie to give it another look.

My 6 year old daughter absolutely loves Peter Pan, and subsequently made me watch it with her half a dozen times over the two days after it arrived in the mail. Needless to say, I had significant time to examine the quality from every angle. The audio and video quality was extremely well done and looks stunning even on large format HD televisions. It was very hard to tell that this was animated over 60 years ago.

Thankfully, after our 6th consecutive viewing, I was able to convince my little princess to let me explore the rest of the Blu-Ray, and check out the extras. Disney stocked the Peter Pan Diamond Edition with tons of extra content like audio commentary, extra songs, and the documentary “Growing Up With Nine Old Men”. But I do have to say my particular favorite new feature is the pirate filled interactive pause screen. You will definitely need to take some time to pause the movie and experience this feature.

Peter Pan Diamond Edition

All in all, I would have to say that Disney definitely hit it out of the park with this Diamond Edition release. It is not only an exceptionally well done version of this classic movie, but it has a wealth of additional content that both entertains and gives insight into the amazing people who helped bring this story, and countless others to life. I would highly recommend it for Disney fans old and young alike.

Peter Pan Diamond Edition is out now, and is really a must own for anyone who always wanted to travel to Neverland!

Tinker Bell And The Secret Of The Wings ** Spoiler Free **

Tinker Bell and the Secret of the Wings

Tinker Bell and the Secret of the Wings

Being the proud father of a six year old little princess obsessed with all things Tinker Bell, I have seen the previous three Fairies movies more times that should be allowed by law.  However, Disney has done a fantastic job keeping this franchise alive and fresh much longer than most, and they definitely didn’t disappoint this time around.  Their ability to take a secondary character and transform her into a compelling central figure has been unmatched with this franchise. Kids, at least mine, can’t get enough of the misadventures of this spunky sprite and her band of fairy friends.

Disney’s fourth animated Fairies tale, Tinker Bell And The Secret Of The Wings, follows the continued adventures, and misadventures of Tinker Bell and the fairies of Pixie Hollow.  Once again Tink’s curiosity and knack for trouble takes her on a journey into a place forbidden for warm weather fairies to go.   The Winter Woods, a cold unforgiving side of Pixie Hollow, lies just beyond a stream at the border of the warm weather fairies domain.  While helping animal migrate to the Winter Woods, Tink’s curiosity drives her across the border into the cold where she experiences her wings glowing brightly in the cold and snowy air.  When she discovers the answers to the mystery of her miraculous glowing wings lies deep in the Winter Woods with the winter fairies, her adventure begins. But she will soon discover that both joy and danger await her on her journey.

Tinker Bell and The Secret of the Wings is a sweet, heartfelt story about love, determination, tolerance, and the importance of family. It manages to take a simple concept and story line  and deliver a great message while maintaining a high entertainment value.  My 6 year old daughter, who generally can’t sit through an entire movie, was captivated from start to finish. It flowed very nicely though the story, and there was very little down time, so it kept the attention of my little girl throughout.  It is a great movie for the whole family, and with a running time under 90 minutes, it is perfect for the younger kids as well. The dazzling animation will hook you, and the great story telling will keep you captivated to the very end.  Secret of the Wings was as good, if not better that all three previous films, and I would highly recommend it to any fans of family movies, not just the Disney fans out there.

The Avengers: A Review With Some Spoilers

Being a huge fan of the previous movies in this series, I have been looking forward to The Avengers ever since it was announced. Most movies that are highly promoted and overhyped by the studio rarely live up to the expectations, so there was a little hint of worry looming behind my excitement as I walked into the theater. After the first few minutes, any shred of doubt was gone. The packed theatre was buzzing with anticipations, and erupted in applause and laughter many times throughout the movie. The Avengers more than delivered on everything it promised to be.

This, sixth in this series of movies, begins with Loki devising a way back to Earth with the intent this time of conquering and ruling the people of Earth with the help of his mysterious army of Chitauri. Obsessed with total domination, Loki steals the Tesseract, a mysterious and powerful source of galactic energy, in order to further his conquest. Left with no other options, Nick Fury and the S.H.I.E.L.D agency activates the Avengers initiative to battle this extinction level threat to the human race. The Avengers become a group of unsuspecting heroes, and find themselves with no other option than to work together as a team to defeat Loki and his invading army.

The story seamlessly moves through the sequences evenly balancing out the back stories, character interactions, and action sequences beautifully. Director Joss Whedon does an amazing job both individually fleshing out the characters while maintaining the focus on the ensemble as a whole. Each main character, the lead in their own movie, brings something special to the group without overpowering the other members. Even the minor characters, Black Widow (a minor character from the Iron Man 2) is fleshed out with a more complete back story including new Avengers member Hawkeye.

The combinations of great story, witty dialogue and amazing action sequences make this film a nonstop thrill ride that I want to experience again and again. I know that I most definitely will be seeing Avengers again before it leaves the theater.

War Horse

Normally movie night in our household is comprised of my daughter and I on the couch with a bowl of popcorn enjoying a light hearted, family friendly film.  I realized that I would unfortunately have to go it alone this week when we received War Horse in the mail.  So, after dinner was done, and my little princess was in bed, I sat down to watch.

Being both a lover of history, and a huge fan of Spielberg’s previous war era films (Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List) I was expecting quite a lot from this film.  I was not disappointed.  War Horse was a compelling story that showed the many facets of World War I through the interactions of Joey, the “War Horse”, with a number of characters throughout all facets of the war.  Although this masterfully written and directed story focuses on the uplifting relationships between the horse and the people he meets on his journey, it in no way glazes over the true horror of World War I.  The movie depicts the true nature of the war and the fates of many working animals in the military at the time.  Spielberg does a great job balancing the harsh tone of war with compelling stories, characters, and some lighthearted moments.

I would highly recommend this film to any fans of the period, or of Spielberg’s previous period films.  It has compelling scenes both harsh and uplifting, and is definitely worth the time.

War Horse is available now on DVD and Blu-Ray Combo pack. To stay connected, “Like” the Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/WarHorseMovie, Follow us on twitter @WarHorseMovie, and view videos at www.YouTube.com/WarHorseMovie.

Looking For Something To Do This Weekend? Go See John Carter!!!

I was a little skeptical going into John Carter, as I had never read Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 1917 novel and the trailers were not indicative of anything that hasn’t been done and overdone before.  But I was happy to find that John Carter was a fun adventure movie filled with action, humor, great animation, and even a love story.  But was it the huge blockbuster Disney had hoped for in the epic adaptation of an almost 100 year old sci-fi novel?

The movie begins with a comical montage of scenes where Carter, a former confederate Calvary man turned “crazy” prospector, has a run in with a union Colonel trying to recruit him to fight the Apaches in the Arizona territory.  This series of scenes, some of the funniest of the movie, shows Carter’s series of attempts to escape.  After escaping the union soldiers, and a run in with some Apache warriors, he finds himself in a secret cave of gold face to face with a mysterious cloaked figure.  Following a scuffle, he awakes in a strange barren land where the real adventure begins.

From here it is your classic story of an outsider thrust into a strange world.  Due to the density of his human bones and the gravity on Barsoom, John Carter soon realizes that he can jump great heights and has amazing strength.  And from this point on the movie follows Carter’s exploits as he learns about the new worlds, their civil war, and eventually becomes their champion.

The story has all of the pieces of a great adventure move, compelling characters, a good story, great action sequences, and even some well placed laughs.  The length of the film made it a little difficult to get through because it dragged some in the middle, but overall it was fun, exciting, and definitely worth the price of the ticket.  Going into the film I was a little skeptical, but I came out wanting more.  I am definitely looking forward to the next installment.
