Running Mickey’s Jingle Jungle 5K at Animal Kingdom

Up at 5am to get ready
Up at 5am to get ready

This weekend I was able to participate in my second runDisney race this year in the Mickey’s Jingle Jungle 5K. I’ve done little actual running this year, but I’m going to be doing the inaugural Minnie 10K during marathon weekend in January so I figured I would try to do this as a warm up race. This wasn’t my first 5K, but I decided ahead of time I was going to take it easy since I am on antibiotics and medication for sinusitis.

I mostly wanted to do this race for the absolutely adorable Christmas medal (read: rubbery plastic medallion) that all finishers get. Training as a warmup for the 10K was a bonus too since I’ve just started running 2 – 3 days a week again in the last three weeks since my last 10K in August that didn’t go as planned. You can read about that adventure here. More training can only be a good thing.

The course was through Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which I’ve run through in three other 5Ks, but this was a slightly different course than what they had setup before. For those who have done the Expedition Everest Challenge or any other 5K races through Animal Kingdom, you may recall the first mile through the parking lot almost exclusively, then heading through the Oasis towards Africa before going towards Conservation Station for a switchback. After that you would run through Asia by Everest and Finding Nemo, then out by Dinoland and backstage to exit back into the parking lot. Instead of Conservation Station, we skipped that and had a switchback backstage almost just before exiting the park. This is where there were a few parade floats and character meet and greets setup. Previously on the Conservation Station section there would be floats with characters, but also some live animals with handlers, which I kind of missed to be honest. I’m not sure what the reason for the change was other than possibly avoiding running over the train tracks where Cast Members were always setup to warn those running of the potential hazard.

I knew this was going to be the first race for my friend Doug, so I got there early to support him and so we could hang out before getting in the corrals to start. The race start was at 7am and there were only four waves for this race. I was in the last corral for this one, but surprisingly was crossing the start line at 7:08, just about 10 minutes after the wheelchair participants started. I also found out that morning that my friend Scarlett was running too, which was a nice surprise. Several of our friends came out nice and early to come cheer for us and even made some signs. I especially appreciate those who came to cheer who were running in the Wine and Dine Half Marathon later that night.

For some reason, this race felt much more relaxed than some others did previously. I don’t know if this is because I put no pressure on myself knowing I was going to walk most of it, or what. Others also commented it felt like there were fewer people in this race and the corrals weren’t as crowded. It was a nice chill vibe where I didn’t even enter my corral until 5 minutes before the race started.

As I mentioned, the start was in the parking lot at the Animal Kingdom and the first mile marker was just before the turnstiles to enter the park. A little before the mile 1 point was a spot where I saw friends cheering, and then the Christmas tree lit up at the entrance. I was hoping for some nice Christmas theming with this race and I wasn’t disappointed. Spread out along the course were characters, almost all of whom were in Christmas costumes, mostly their outfits from Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade. Also, towards the end of the course, just before mile 3 was my favorite photo op, and my new avatar thanks to Scarlett’s insistence I get in the picture with her.

The race itself wasn’t bad. The temperature was just below 70 at start time, which wasn’t too warm. I tried out a 30 second jog and a 15 second walk interval for the first 10 minutes and was on a better pace than what I’d been doing on the treadmill recently, so that was nice. I was having a little trouble breathing since I forgot to use my inhaler ahead of time, so I walked for longer periods for most of the rest of the race. I was passed by Doug and ran into Scarlett waiting in lines for characters. Scarlett and I finished the race walking together which was nice, since I normally run alone.

We had a fun time, which is ultimately what we set out to do. None of us, other than Doug, were out to set a personal record, and he did great in his first race! I got my medal and enjoyed the course, even running into one of my mom’s friends who was running in her first race. For those who are looking to just get started in running or walking even, a 5K at Disney is a great place. They say there is a 16 minute pace requirement, but that is very loosely enforced. I know people who were finishing at closer to an hour and 30 minutes from the race start time by the time they waited in lines for characters.

Have you found yourself running in a runDisney race before? What is your favorite course? Or your favorite medal? This was my ninth 5K and I enjoy them so I’ll keep at it. Next schedule race is the 10K in January and another 5K in February for Princess Half Marathon weekend. Still looking for another 5K next month as a warmup.

A first timer’s look into Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party!

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party Castle

Friday was the kick off night for the Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party! I had always read about this night, and always wanted to go but each year put it off thinking it was maybe just for kids. Well last month we were lucky enough to go to the Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, and you really didnt need kids to enjoy that one, you just may need to BE a big kid! Which was perfect for me! So we figured now was the best time to go to the Christmas Party and see what that one was all about!

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party Snow on Main Street

As soon as you get your wristband and enter the park, it strikes you how they go all out for Christmas, the decor was just incredible. It might only be November on the calander but in my heart it was already late December! The lights, the wreathes, the music, the smells, everything screams holidays as soon as you enter into the park! I was very excited to see that on Main Street it was even snowing, in Florida, snowing! it was perfect and really got me into the Christmas Spirit!

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party hotchoc

The first place we headed was to the free Hot Chocolate and Cookies, you can look these up on the park map and also look out for the giant inflatable candy cane that shows you where they are being served. The hot chocolate place we first went to was by the Pirates Of The Caribbean ride, and was extremely hot. Luckily this made me remove the lid and I noticed marshmallows on the top, which I wish they had stated on the signs as being a vegetarian I cannot eat these. Fortunately everyone else in our party could, so after that I just made sure I requested mine without.

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party jingle

Next we headed over to the Jungle Cruise, which, for the first time ever, had been converted into the Jingle Cruise featuring a holiday overlay. The ride was all Christmas themed from the names on the boats to the decorations on the props and the jokes told by the skippers. During the ride there are not many changes to the actual scenes, so guests who have not ridden the Jungle Cruise before would still be able to enjoy this classic ride with only a few Christmas themed jokes thrown in.

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party minnie

By this time we thought we should try get a space for Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmastime Parade, as it was a sold out night so we knew it was going to be busy. We ended up not really finding a great place to stand, but luckily we could still see over people enough to enjoy all the floats. It was really fun seeing all the characters in holiday attire, but my favorite part in the whole parade was without a doubt the toy soldiers…

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party toysoldiers

I just loved their little routines, their attire and they seemed to have so much personality and flair! Plus you knew once you saw them that Santa was going to be next as he is featured on the last float.

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party santa

Once the parade ended we walked over to the Hub to get in place for the Celebrate The Magic show on Cinderella’s Castle, which I had seen some of this before but I had never stood in the middle for it with such a fantastic view before!

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party waltcastle

The show was everything it promised to be..magical! I loved every moment of it, from Tinkerbell flying out, to Walt’s face right there on the castle, the effects were just so beautiful!

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party gingercastle

The Christmas part at the end was really cool to see, my favorite part was this photo above, where they made the castle look like a giant gingerbread castle! It looked so real!

After the show we decided to stay in the same spot as it would be a great place for the fireworks! I am lucky enough to see the fireworks every day from home, but I rarely get to see them from right on front of the castle like this, its truly a wonderful experience.

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party castlewow

I loved how they mixed the fireworks together with the Celebrate The Magic projections too, especially when it made it look like the fireworks were being set off right in front of the castle, when really it was behind!

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party castleworks

A great tip if you want to feel part of the show, is if you purchase the new Glow With The Show ears, the ears actually light up in synch with the fireworks and castle show, as can be seen in this photo above! You simply turn them on and they all coordinate, so it really adds another element to the show to enjoy as you get to participate with it.

httpv://youtu.be/9yN5SligZY0

Once we had enjoyed the fireworks we were all pretty tired so we decided on a loop around on the TTA and another stop for hot chocolate and cookies. I came home pretty exhausted but it was very worth it, this was my first time doing this party and it sure won’t be my last!

Tickets are on sale now and do require separate admission to get in. It is running already on select nights up until December 20th, but start looking now as they do tend to sell out some nights.

TrenD Report: Window Shopping For The Holidays

Guess who’s back?

Back again.

Shelley’s back.

Grab a friend…

Cause it’s time to go window shopping at my favorite Downtown Disney store…TrenD!!!

While it has been awhile since I have posted a TrenD Report (my sincere apologies), I thought that this would be a great time to visit my favorite store to get some gift ideas for myself and my friends.

I was really excited to see that there were some new colder weather options available! While the Tink and Mickey sweatshirt ponchos are a little different, they are really cute on and super comfortable. And I absolutely adore the sequin Minnie Mouse bow sweatshirts (I am partial to the red one)!

It’s great to see more Harveys bags at TrenD! The new Minnie Leopard bags are in stock, and look great! I think the charm is a great touch on these bags!

And what screams trend right now more than chevrons? And there are some really cute bags and accessories that feature Mickey’s silhouette in a chevron pattern. The bags shape is super on trend with the double handles, but I wish that it was more of a ‘fall/winter’ fabric. It’s still cute, but with the weight of the fabric it seems more of a summer purse to me.

There were also tons of great new earrings!!! I am going to have to get the chocolate rhinestone Mickey earrings, but the Mickey silver studs with the LOVE cuff were totally different and neat!

While I am not a fan of the crop tops, I was happy to see that there were fewer of them to show on this TrenD Report!!!

Now that I shared a few of my thoughts on what I found, let’s get to window shopping!!!

TrenD Report: November 11, 2013

And if that wasn’t enough Downtown Disney shopping awesomeness, Did you see the news about the Marketplace Co Op that is coming to what is currently Team Mickey?

Beginning in early 2014, construction will begin on the Marketplace Co Op which will feature an innovative store design!

The Marketplace Co Op will consist of six new spaces at its opening, and they will be:

  • Beautifully Disney – A beauty destination for woman featuring make-up, fragrance and beauty accessories.
  • Cherry Tree Lane – Accessories for the sophisticated woman with a passion for scarves, shoes, bags and jewelry.
  • D-Tech on Demand – A place to personalize and customize your own electronic accessories.
  • The Trophy Room- Vintage inspired, lifestyle sports apparel and collectibles.
  • Centerpiece – Home product for Guests that want a splash of Disney in their room furnishings, textiles and everyday ware.
  • Zoey and Pickles – A girls’ destination containing the latest trends and glamour for the up and coming fashionista.

I am BEYOND excited about D-Tech on Demand, because I am hoping that they will expand their phone case customizations from the 12 options that they debuted at this year’s Star Wars Weekends!

So what do you think? I’d love to hear what you’ll be putting on your holiday Wish List and what Marketplace Co Op space you’re most excited about!!!

Thoughts On Attending The U.S. Women’s National Team Friendly

Kelly Christine Delaney is back On the Go to share her thoughts on the International Friendly match with U.S. Women’s National Team vs Brazil to be played this Sunday, November 10th, at the Citrus Bowl.

Soccer, it isn’t for everyone, I get it. “It’s slow” “It’s boring” “How can it end in a tie?” are all things I hear from non-soccer fans. While some aren’t open to trying the sport, I find that anyone who is open to watching a game will usually try a game involving the US national team before an MLS game. I recommend that if you’re in the Orlando area this weekend you should go and see the 2012 gold medal US national team.

Florida Citrus Bowl
United States (USA) starting XI. The women’s national team of the United States defeated the Korea Republic 5-0 during an international friendly at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ, on June 20, 2013.

For years I didn’t get to see a sport I enjoyed in person played professionally more than once a year until a few years ago when my hometown gained an MLS franchise. Nowadays I spend a fair amount of my year traveling to see my MLS team, the Philadelphia Union,  and the U.S. National Teams play across the country, and I’m having so much fun every chance I get to see soccer played live.

U.S.Women's National Team

I saw the U.S. Women’s National Team, USWNT, play last May before they left for the Olympics. It was a great family friendly crowd that enjoyed seeing some of the biggest stars in the world win a game. The supporters groups (dedicated fans that chant and sing for the whole game) were there in force and helped create an exciting atmosphere despite it being an international friendly. The team was very gracious after the match and signed autographs and took pictures for the fans that came out. I saw many children leave with excited stories of meeting women they looked up to. It was an awesome experience.

MLS is days away from confirming Orlando as the 21st franchise. In this exciting time for soccer in Orlando, I recommend heading down to the U.S. Women’s National Team match to meet local soccer supporters and see what the central Florida soccer community is all about.

Tickets for the U.S. Women’s National Team vs Brazil at the Citrus Bowl on November 10th are still available here!

We can’t wait to share our experience on Sunday, so make sure you’re following us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for all the fun!

And if you’re at the match, make sure to tweet us @onthegoinmco and say hi!!!

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party Returns Friday

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party
Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party returns this week to the Magic Kingdom on Friday. I am so looking forward to this special event as it is the kickoff for the holiday season in the parks for me. Separate tickets are required for admission to the party. The event takes place select nights in November and December and runs from 7pm to midnight. Advance tickets are available at a discount for most nights with a savings of $5 per ticket, and select dates also offer military, DVC and AP discounts.

I can’t wait to attend Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party this Friday night for several reasons. One, the new Jingle Cruise is debuting. We rarely (if ever) get holiday overlays here at Walt Disney World and this is one I am excited about. I really enjoy the Jungle Cruise and its background music from the 1930s/40s is great. I hope they match that era of Christmas music in the queue as it is some of my favorite music. I think it will be especially cool to compare the Jingle Cruise here to the overlay in Disneyland in a few weeks.

My favorite part of the party by far is the Once Upon A Christmastime Parade. It takes place twice during the evening at 8:15 and 10:30pm and starts in Frontierland and ends on Main Street. If you get a chance, I highly recommend watching from Main Street with a view of Cinderella Castle. This makes for awesome pictures with the castle dream lights and the “snow” on Main Street. Seeing the characters all dressed up in their Christmas costumes is fantastic! It really makes it feel like Christmas to me during this parade ending with a certain jolly fellow.

Holiday Wishes: Celebrate the Spirit of the Season is a special fireworks show at 9:30pm on Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party nights. A new enhancement this year will feature the new to Walt Disney World Glow With The Show Ears that will change colors along with the fireworks. I have yet to see the ears here, but saw a small sampling last summer at Disney California Adventure during of World of Color, so I think it should be cool.

Also new this year will be a Sorcerer’s of the Magic Kingdom card exclusive to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party featuring Huey, Dewey and Louie. As much as I hate to admit it, I’ve only played Sorcerer’s once, but I love collecting the cards, so I am looking forward to this special edition card. Of course another favorite aspect of the party is the included hot chocolate and cookies. There are also dance parties, stage shows and most attractions are open during the party.

What is your favorite part of Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party? Will you be attending this year? Some of us will be there for the first party of the year on Friday, which is already sold out. If you’ll be there, come say hi!

Pick Six: Taking Kids To A Live WWE Event

WWE RAW

Having the opportunity to attend a live WWE event is really exciting for fans, but when WWE RAW came to the Amway Center we decided to take Zoe for her first live WWE Event!

This was the her first time going to a live WWE event of this scale, and there were some things that we prepared for as a family before arriving at the Amway Center and some things that happened during WWE RAW that we didn’t quite expect.

WWE RAW

For our Pick Six, I thought I would look at the six key things we did to help make sure that Zoe had a great time!

1. Getting to know the WWE Universe

I should start this post off by saying that we watch a LOT of WWE in our house!!! We have Monday Night dinners around watching WWE RAW with friends, we watch WWE Main Event and Smackdown, and even attend WWE NXT tapings at Full Sail.

However since a majority of the shows are on so late, we DVR them to watch together later as a family. That way if Zoe has any questions or if things get too intense we can take a break to talk about things.

WWE RAW
It’s good to know the entrances of the WWE Superstars, because there are a lot that include Pyro which can be startling if you aren’t expecting it.

We tend to talk a lot about our favorite WWE Superstars (she LOVES John Cena, Fandango and Summer Rae, and AJ Lee), and when we don’t have all the answers about them we visit their Bios on WWE.com for some extra fun!

WWE RAW
CM Punk

2. Choosing the right seats for YOU

There are so many different seating options at the Amway Center at so many price points, that it is important to do your homework about what you think you will want to be close to without breaking the bank.

WWE RAW

Do you want to be close to the action? Do you want to be close to the concourse in case you need to be close to restrooms and concessions? Is your sole focus budget? Are you looking for a unique experience?

We knew that we wanted seats that would allow us to be close to the action while not having too many stairs, and that is when the virtual tour of the Amway Center came in handy, and I absolutely suggest looking for resources like that when you are researching the venue.

3. Arriving at the venue

With WWE RAW starting at 7:30 pm we tried to make our day as normal as possible, but at the same time changed up a few things since we knew that we would be out so late.

Usually Zoe will come home and play before doing her homework, but on that night we gave her a snack and worked with her to get her right away to get her homework done.

WWE RAW
Outside of the Amway Center before WWE RAW.

We decided to head down to the Amway Center early to have dinner at the Magic Grill, which turned out to be one of the best decisions we made for the night!

WWE RAW

The Magic Grill is located on the corner of the Amway Center and opens a few hours before events, and it is great food at reasonable prices that is a great way to start getting your children adjusted to the excitement that surrounded WWE RAW.

4. Preparing for emotions…Is he really hurt?

While we talk to Zoe a lot about how while the action she would be seeing would be absolutely real, that the WWE Superstars were trained well and sometimes played up how ‘hurt’ they really were for the sake of show.

This was a sticky subject, because we didn’t want to ruin how ‘real’ the WWE Universe is to her while making sure she wasn’t fearful for her favorite Superstar’s well-being yet still acknowledging that it is a physical arena where injuries do happen.

We did have a moment during the John Cena/Damien Sandow match where the action got a little too intense for her, so we made sure to assure her that if John Cena was absolutely hurt that they would end the match and we also used it as a teachable moment to talk about how we deal with our emotions when we are scared and a little overwhelmed.

WWE RAW
Zoe needed a little extra love when her favorite John Cena was having an intense match.

5. During WWE RAW

During the WWE RAW event, we knew that sitting for such a long period of time would be hard for Zoe so we tried to combat that as much as possible without having to leave the venue too often.

One thing we did was to take a few smaller breaks during matches or commercial breaks where we used the facilities, picked up some merchandise, and a quick snack.

WWE RAW

Another thing that we made sure that we did was to let her stand up to cheer and dance as much as she needed/wanted to do as long as it was appropriate to what was going on around her.

We were pleasantly surprised with how little we left the venue, because she was completely engaged with what was going on around her.

And honestly, how could you not be totally engaged when this was what was going on around you!!!

httpv://youtu.be/kaHvq-SgJPU

6. Being realistic about bedtimes

The biggest thing that we prepared for before going to see WWE RAW was just how long of a night attending a taping would be!

While WWE RAW is a live event that concludes around 11:00 pm, make sure you factor in extra time for walking to your car when you are looking at how long your children will need to be awake.

We started letting Zoe stay up a little later each night for a week, and we also had a super low key day before we arrived at the Amway Center.

Overall she did a great job knowing her limits, and she totally surprised us when she walked over to a couch in the box and fell asleep!

WWE RAW
Sleepy Zoe!

BONUS: Fun WWE Extras at live events

Before you get to the venue for your live WWE event, make sure you keep watch for things going on around the venue and an eye on the WWE Social Media Accounts (Twitter, Facebook, & Tout) for fun extras that will be going on before the event!

At the WWE RAW at the Amway Center, the WWE NXT Superstars and their belts were signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. It was so much fun and a great bonus to our evening!

WWE RAW
The WWE NXT Superstars and their belts! This was a huge highlight of our night!
WWE RAW
Zoe and her absolute favorite Emma!!!!

Also, make sure you download the WWE App on your phone for some fun extras, too!

I hope that these six ideas help you and your children have an amazing time at a live WWE event!!!

I would love to hear how you help your children be prepared for new experiences!

If you want more WWE coverage, we’ve posted a ton of great pictures on our Facebook page, make sure that you check out our WWE NXT posts, coverage of the new WWE Performance Center, and my experience at an Orlando Be a STAR Rally!

Disclaimer: Through a partnership WWE and the Amway Center, I received tickets to attend WWE RAW at the Amway Center. All thoughts, opinions, and fangirl moments are my own.

Travers (Thompson), and Walt Disney (Hanks).

Disney twenty-three’s Winter issue also offers a look inside the fascinating life of P.L.
