Dezerland Hosts Larger Than Life’s Dream Trip

Dezerland Hosts Larger Than Life’s Dream Trip

When a family receives a serious diagnosis, especially for a child, it often becomes the focus of everyday life. Dezerland Action Park and Larger Than Life are working together to give these families a day of fun.

On March 20, Dezerland Action Park will host 35 children and teens who are not currently undergoing treatment as a part of Larger Than Life’s annual dream trip. Larger Than Life is a nonprofit organization that supports children and families in Israel throughout the healing process. Each year, the organization brings children—accompanied by caregivers, medical professionals, and family members—from Israel and other parts of the United States to Orlando.

For this year’s trip, Dezerland Action Park has agreed to cover the cost of all 75 to 100 guests’ fun and food during their visit to the entertainment center.

The group will enjoy a kosher meal inside Pinball Palace and a tour of the Orlando Auto Museum, which is home to more than 2,000 vehicles, including many vehicles made famous by television and movies, and the world’s largest collection of James Bond vehicles and memorabilia.

“We couldn’t be more excited to host the children from Larger Than Life at Dezerland Action Park and to see members of the community participate in the celebration,” said John Goodman, vice president of sales and marketing at Dezerland Action Park. “They’ve traveled a long way for this once-in-a-lifetime trip and it’s an honor to help them create happy memories.”

Larger Than Life and Dezerland Action Park are also inviting members of the local community and other organization supporters to participate in the fun with a celebration in the Orlando Auto Museum.

From 6 to 9:30 p.m., guests can explore the museum’s extensive collection of vehicles, followed by a carnival-style party complete with concession stands in the American Classics exhibit.

The event will also feature amazing entertainment, including an acrobat and a floating statue performer.

Tickets for supporters will cost $20 for adults and $10 for children. 100% of the ticket proceeds will benefit Larger Than Life. To learn more about the event or purchase tickets, click here.

Before the Larger Than Life celebration begins, those attending the event can also explore Dezerland Action Park’s other offerings, like axe throwing, racing on Florida’s longest indoor go-kart track with four skill and speed levels and competing in the laser tag maze or virtual reality arena.

Mister Rogers’ Week of Kindness

Mr. Rogers' Week of Kindness

Mister Rogers’ Week of Kindness, a week-long series of educational and public events inspired by the nationally renowned children’s television host and American icon, is set to commence March 20, 2023, throughout the greater Orlando area on what would have been Fred Rogers’ 95th birthday.

“He was probably the kindest person I ever knew,” shared David Newell, a close friend to Fred, and more famously known as the actor who portrayed Mr. McFeely on the children’s television program. “He was kind; he was thoughtful. He practiced that every day. He was that way with everyone.”

Newell, as well as longtime Rogers employee Hedda Sharapan (now a senior fellow at the Fred Rogers Institute and child development consultant to Fred Rogers Productions) and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood producer Margy Whitmer, are among those cast and crew veterans coming to Orlando to participate in the activities.

The free public events March 23-25 for the inaugural year of Mister Rogers’ Week of Kindness include:

This event is held due to the generosity of the First Presbyterian Church of Orlando. Breakfast is included courtesy of Panera Bread.

Mr. McFeely Meet & Greet

Come visit our favorite Speedy Delivery man, Mr. McFeely (David Newell), at Taste of Oviedo. Get a selfie or pick up an autographed photo from the man at Mister Rogers’ side from the first episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Saturday, March 25, at the Original Orlando Tours booth at Taste of Oviedo in the Oviedo Mall parking lot, 1700 Oviedo Mall Boulevard (Oviedo), from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. Free parking is available in the Oviedo Mall parking lot.

“Fred McFeely Rogers devoted his entire life to reminding us of some of the most important ideas of what it means to be human among humans: love, respect and kindness,” explained Rich Bradley, President & CEO of Buena Vista Events & Management, which is in-part underwriting and producing Mister Rogers’ Week of Kindness. “Many of us find that nearly 20 years after Fred’s passing, it is important to focus on his teachings once again, perhaps now more than ever. This is a week to re-engage with his massive body of work with some folks, and to introduce his teachings to others.”

Unbeknownst to some locals, Central Florida was a major part of Fred Rogers’ life. He took to the area immediately in 1948 when he transferred from Dartmouth College to Rollins College in Winter Park.

He met the love of his life and future spouse, Sara Joanne Byrd, on the tarmac of what is now the Orlando Executive Airport. His sister (Elaine) and one of his sons (John) attended Rollins, as did his nephew Dan Crozier, who has served on the school’s music faculty for many years.

Most importantly, at a point in his career, Fred and Joanne returned to Winter Park annually, where he used his time in Central Florida to write many of the 895 scripts and over 200 pieces of original music for the TV program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

The Orlando region is truly Mister Rogers’ real neighborhood.

Sanford St. Paddy’s Day Truck Pull 2023

Sanford St. Paddy’s Day Truck Pull

If it’s St. Patrick’s Day, you know already what’s happening in Historic Downtown Sanford – the 5th Annual St. Paddy’s Day Truck Pull!

During the event, local businesses and fire departments have gathered their strongest friends to see if they have what it takes to pull a fire truck.

On Saturday, March 18, the St. Patrick’s Day festivities continue at the ‘The Famous L’ between West End Trading Co. and Celery City Craft with the St. Paddy’s Day Truck Pull & Street Festival. The festival will feature live music on multiple stages, craft beer, food trucks, vendors and lots of Sanford Fun!

The truck pull begins at 4 p.m. and teams will try their luck pulling a fire truck one block down Palmetto Ave. for the chance to win a trophy and bragging rights for a whole year.

Sanford St. Paddy’s Day Truck Pull

This year, there’s double the fun for spectators to enjoy with two categories in the truck pull competition. One group will be made up of teams from local businesses and another group will include teams with the strongest members of fire departments from across Central Florida. Teams must include ten members, and each must register and pay a $100 sign-up fee.

“The Sanford community loves to come together for a good time and a good cause!” said Paul Williams, owner of The West End Trading Co. “Even if you’re not trying your luck with the truck pull, we can’t wait to see everyone enjoying the competition and all of the festival’s offerings.”

Hosted by the Sanfording Event Production Group of West End Trading Co., Celery City Craft, Historic Downtown Sanford, and Ladies 327, the event has become a tradition that challenges guests for a good cause. All sign-up fees from the truck pull will go towards Special Needs Advocacy Program, Inc.

Special Needs Advocacy Program, Inc. serves families in Sanford who support children with disabilities. SNAP provides children with disabilities a platform to understand and retain positive social skills to enter the workforce successfully, social events, and other public arenas.
