Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts is excited to announce the lineup for the 10th Broadway in Orlando season.

The dynamic 9-show lineup in Walt Disney Theater features the return of three blockbuster musicals Annie,  Disney’s Aladdin and Les Misérables, and the Broadway in Orlando premieres of six new shows, including Funny GirlMoulin Rouge! The Musical, Jagged Little Pill, Mrs. Doubtfire, the new adaptation of Peter Pan and the brand new Clue–the latter five of which are debuting their first national tours.

Florida Theatrical Association in partnership with Broadway Across America and the Dr. Phillips Center presents the AdventHealth Broadway in Orlando 23/24 Season.

The arts center’s Walt Disney Theater has been home to Broadway in Orlando for the past seven seasons, following Broadway’s two seasons at the former Bob Carr Theater before the Dr. Phillips Center opened in 2014.

Dr. Phillips Center 2023 Summer Camps

The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts has announced its lineup of 2023 summer camps that are on sale now.

These week-long camps held in June and July at the arts center’s AdventHealth School of the Arts are available for students of varying ages and skill levels in various performing arts featuring musical theater and comedy.

Dr. Phillips Center is also accepting applications for auditions for its annual summer productions. Students ages 13 to 19 can audition for a role in the Pre-Professional Production of Bring It On: The Musical, culminating in two performances in the arts center’s acoustically remarkable Steinmetz Hall.

Aspiring actors ages 19 to 25 are encouraged to audition for the Summer Stock Production A Chorus Line culminating in five performances open to the public in Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater.

Musical Theater: Take It From The Top

Ages: 10–18

June 12–16, 2023

The Take It From The Top program is returning to the Dr. Phillips Center. This Broadway week is a unique opportunity to learn from a talented team of experienced Broadway professionals and a professional casting director.

Broadway veterans design this professional Broadway workshop Paul Canaan (Kinky Boots, Legally Blonde, Thoroughly Modern Millie, La Cage Aux Folles, Miss Saigon) and Tony Award Nominee Laura Bell Bundy (Legally Blonde, Wicked, Hairspray and Ruthless). 

Participants will explore the “triple threat” of music, dance, and theater with a final performance for an invited audience of family and friends in Steinmetz Hall. Explore the process of casting, auditions, and rehearsals with mentorship from Broadway performers, directors, choreographers, and a casting industry professional. 

Pre-Professional Production: Bring It On: The Musical

Ages: 13–19

June 19–July 1

Bitingly relevant, sprinkled with sass, and inspired by the hit film, Bring It On: The Musical takes audiences on a high-flying journey that is filled with the complexities of friendship, jealousy, betrayal, and forgiveness.

Uniting some of the freshest and funniest creative minds on Broadway, Bring It On features an original story by Tony Award winner Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q), music and lyrics by Pulitzer- and Tony-winning composer Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights, Hamilton), music by Pulitzer- and Tony Award-winning composer, Tom Kitt (Next to Normal), lyrics by Broadway lyricist, Amanda Green (High Fidelity), and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical.

Join their cast this summer as they put on in just 80 hours of rehearsal, and get to perform in Steinmetz Hall. 

Each rehearsal will consist of blocking, character development work, vocal rehearsals, choreography, and tech rehearsals combining lighting and sound elements to create full professional production.

There will be two performances open to the public after the program concludes. Tickets can be purchased for the public to attend at $25 each. 

SCHEDULE: 

Auditions: Once registered, participants will be asked to submit a video audition singing a 16–32 bar cut of a musical theater song selection of their choice in a similar style to the show as their audition submission for lead and supporting roles – due Sunday, June 11. 

Callbacks: Saturday, June 17 | 9 a.m–4 p.m.

Everyone will receive a callback notice and/or dance call for Saturday, June 17, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.

Cast List: We’ll announce the cast Sunday, June 18, before the first rehearsal on June 19. 

Rehearsals: June 19–30 | 9 a.m–5 p.m. 

This is a full 2-week commitment (no rehearsal on June 24 or 25) 

Bring food for a 1-hour lunch break (closed campus).

Performances: June 30 & July 1 | 7 p.m. in Steinmetz Hall

Comedy: Improv Intensive with SAK Comedy Lab 

Ages: 8–10

July 5–7, 2023

The arts center’s annual Improv Intensive will provide an opportunity to delve into comedy, stand-up, monologue, and improv while working through various acting and improvisational methods with expert improvisers.

Learn how to share creativity with a scene partner and incorporate the audience’s energy.

This three-day intensive will help students grow in skill, craft, and artistry as an actor.

Friends and family will be able to see the student’s performance in the final showcase on a professional stage.  

Musical Theater: Best of Broadway

Ages: 6–10 

July 10–14, 2023

Calling all singers, dancers, and actors! Students learn how to sing, act and dance to the best songs from favorite Broadway classics and new works! The arts center’s Broadway-themed Musical Theater week will help students develop this story by expanding vocal technique, character development, dance, and stage presence.

Friends and family will be able to see the student’s performance in the final showcase on a professional stage. 

Musical Theater: The Magic of Disney

Ages: 6–10

July 17–21, 2023

Be their guest and join the adventure of a lifetime as students bring the magic of musical theater to life during the Disney-themed musical theater week.

Students will tell a thrilling story through theatrical performance combining songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance while moving through their favorite Disney movies!

Friends and family will be able to see the student’s performance in the final showcase on a professional stage. 

Musical Theater: Universal DreamWorks Adventure

Ages: 6–10

July 24–28, 2023

We’re dreaming big during this musical theater week! This week will explore the various lessons of individuality, friendship, kindness, and confidence from popular Universal DreamWorks films such as Trolls, Madagascar, and Shrek through script reading, singing, and dancing.

Friends and family will be able to see the student’s performance in the final showcase on a professional stage. 

Summer Stock Production: A Chorus Line

Ages: 19–25

June 4–August 6

Calling performers ages 19–25 that have completed at least 1 year of college! Aspiring actors are encouraged to audition. 

A Chorus Line is a stunning concept musical capturing the spirit and tension of a Broadway chorus audition.

Exploring professional Broadway performers’ inner lives and bittersweet ambitions, the show features one powerhouse number after another. Memorable musical numbers include “What I Did for Love,” “One,” “I Can Do That,” “At the Ballet,” “The Music and the Mirror,” and “I Hope I Get It.” A brilliantly complex fusion of song, dance, and compellingly authentic drama, A Chorus Line was instantly recognized as a classic.

Five performances will be open to the public in Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater. Tickets can be purchased for the public to attend at $29.95 each

The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts has announced that the hugely acclaimed and much beloved Grammy-winning Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Tony Award-winning triumph, Into the Woods, will go on sale for single tickets Friday, February 17.

The direct-from-Broadway production will play a series of select engagements across the U.S. in 2023, including seven performances in Walt Disney Theater. Starring Montego Glover as The Witch, Stephanie J. Block as The Baker’s Wife, Sebastian Arcelus as The Baker, and Gavin Creel as Cinderella’s Prince/Wolf reprising their Broadway roles, the strictly limited engagement will run from June 6 to June 11 presented by Dr. Phillips Center.

As one of only ten cities in the country selected to present this direct-from-Broadway production, the downtown Orlando arts center is excited to welcome Into the Woods and its incredible company to Walt Disney Theater, bringing four Broadway stars to Central Florida.

Into the Woods, which became the first Broadway hit of the 2022/2023 season after its sold-out run at New York City Center Encores!, is directed by Lear deBessonet, with music supervision by Rob Berman, and choreographed by Lorin Latarro. This production is dedicated to the memory of Stephen Sondheim.

The company will include Cole Thompson as Jack, Katy Geraghty as Little Red Ridinghood, Diane Phelan as Cinderella, Nancy Opel as Cinderella’s Stepmother, Jason Forbach as Rapunzel’s Prince, Aymee Garcia as Jack’s Mother, David Patrick Kelly as The Narrator, Josh Breckbenridge as Cinderella’s Father, Felicia Curry as Cinderella’s Mother/Grandmother/Giant’s Wife, Ta’Nika Gibson as Lucinda, Brooke Ishibashi as Florinda, Kennedy Kanagawa as Milky White, Jim Stanek as the Steward, and Alysia Velez as Rapunzel with Erica Durham, Ellie Fishman, Marya Grandy, Paul Kreppel, Eddie Lopez, Ximone Rose, and Sam Simahk as understudies.

Into the Woods first premiered on Broadway in 1987, winning three Tony Awards, including Best Score and Best Book. It has since been produced worldwide and was adapted into a major motion picture in 2014. This production marks its first time on Broadway in more than 20 years.

About Pat Metheny

It is one thing to attain popularity as a musician, but it is another to receive the kind of acclaim Pat Metheny has garnered from critics and peers. Over the years, Metheny has won countless polls as “Best Jazz Guitarist” and awards, including three gold records for (Still Life) Talking, Letter from Home, and Secret Story. He has also won 20 Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories including Best Rock Instrumental, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Best Instrumental Composition and, at one point, winning seven consecutive Grammys for seven consecutive albums.

In 2015 he was inducted into the Downbeat Hall of Fame, becoming only the fourth guitarist to be included (along with Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery) and it’s youngest member. Metheny has spent much of his life on tour, often doing more than 100 shows a year since becoming a bandleader in the 70s. He continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community, dedicating time to both his own projects and those of emerging artists and established veterans alike, helping them to reach their audience as well as realizing their own artistic visions.

About Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater grew from a now-fabled performance in March 1958 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. Led by Alvin Ailey and a group of young African-American modern dancers, that performance changed forever the perception of American dance.

The Ailey company has gone on to perform for an estimated 25 million people at theaters in 48 states and 71 countries on six continents, as well as millions more through television broadcasts, film screenings and online platforms. Today, the Company continues Mr. Ailey’s mission by presenting important works of the past and commissioning new ones. In all, more than 235 works by over 90 choreographers have been part of the Ailey company’s repertory.

Before his untimely death in 1989, Alvin Ailey named Judith Jamison as his successor, and over the next 21 years, she brought the Company to unprecedented success. Ms. Jamison, in turn, personally selected Robert Battle to succeed her in 2011, and The New York Times declared he “has injected the company with new life.”
