SeaWorld Christmas Celebration

It’s Christmas time again!! SeaWorld has brought back their Christmas Celebration and it bigger and better than ever! New Shows, decorations, and Atmosphere Entertainment have been added to this year’s festivities! As always, these events are included in your regular park admission!

Our first stop was Elmo’s Christmas Wish – Elmo, Cookie Monster, Grover, Zoe, Rosita all make their Christmas wishes! There is tons of singing and dancing as the friends all make their wishes for Christmas and help Elmo make his wish. This is a must do for the little ones! Little Man was very excited to see his favorites on stage! He also loved the bubbles and “snow” coming down from the ceiling!

After we left the show, we headed to the waterfront to see the Sea of Trees. Crazy!! SO MANY TREES, over 100 of them! They were everywhere; and the colors and music were so festive. I absolutely loved seeing all the dancing images on the trees: candy canes, Frosty the Snowman, gingerbread men and more. It was 10 minutes of magic!

After the Sea of Trees we headed over to O Wondrous Night, the Greatest Story Never Told. We were greeted to a friendly guitar playing singing Christmas songs! What an amazing show! It’s the Christmas Story in a way you’ve never heard before- through the eyes of the animals! The show is filled with wonderful performers, singing traditional Christmas songs, fun puppetry and an actual living nativity! We loved the performance (little man did get kind of antsy, it’s a 30 min show)! Little man’s favorite part was when all the live animals started coming out!

We wen to see Shamu’s Christmas Miracles next. They had a saxophone player for a preshow. I always love the night time Shamu shows! This one was no exception! They whales performed between videos of people telling about their miracles. They had a heart touching video of the first Baby Shamu! We had a few moments where the whales didn’t want to perform, but that happens. We definitely want to come back and see it again!

We ended the night with Winter Wonderland on Ice. We found out earlier in the day that they are skating on real ice, not a synthetic surface. Such a festive ice skating show! Fantastic skaters and some of my favorite Christmas songs, and a new fun one for us “Hot, Hot, Hot Chocolate!” My favorite part was when Pete and Penny Penguin came out to ice skate!! We loved how the fountains and the trees danced to the music too, it was very immersive.

Immediately after the show is Holiday Reflections: Fireworks & Fountain Finale. If you are already there for Winter Wonderland on Ice you don’t need to move, you have a great spot for this finale!

The only things we missed out on during our visit to SeaWorld Orlando’s Christmas Celebration was the Polar Express, the snow flurries on the waterfront, and meeting Santa Shamu! We will definitely be back to see them!

SeaWorld Orlando Works With Local Eye Clinic For Penguins

SeaWorld Orlando SeaWorld Cares Penguin Surgery
A rockhopper penguin has his eyes examined by the veterinarian.

SeaWorld Orlando Veterinary & Aviculture Teams Work with Local Animal Eye Clinic to Remove Cataracts from Four Penguins

A total of four SeaWorld Orlando penguins — one rockhopper and three gentoo – are healing nicely after receiving a specialty surgery on August 28, 2014 to remove cataracts at Animal Eye Associates in Maitland, Fla. The surgery was performed by veterinary ophthalmologist Dr. Heidi Denis, who specializes in animal ophthalmology.

SeaWorld Orlando SeaWorld Cares Penguin Surgery
SeaWorld Orlando’s Veterinary and Aviculture teams work with the Animal Eye Associates, in Maitland, Fla., to remove cataracts from four penguins.

“As penguins get older they begin to show age-related health issues, just like humans,” said Dr. Lara Croft, SeaWorld Senior Veterinarian. “One of these signs is cataracts – a clouding of the eye lens that affects their quality of vision and quality of life. Thanks to this surgery, these four penguins will eventually regain vision and can return to normal behaviors, including eating on their own and swimming.”

SeaWorld Orlando SeaWorld Cares Penguin Surgery

The four penguins range in age from early to late 20s, which exceeds the life expectancy of their wild counterparts. Older penguins in the wild with compromised vision would most likely succumb to predators or starvation.

SeaWorld Orlando SeaWorld Cares Penguin Surgery

SeaWorld aviculturists noticed some of the older penguins in the Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin habitat weren’t eating and needed to be hand-fed. The vets arranged a consultation with eye specialists, and the ophthalmology team at Animal Eye Associates cleared the penguins for the procedure.

“Cataracts are very prevalent in our more than 20-year-old birds, and we now have regular ophthalmology consults for all of our older birds.   Including these recent procedures, 17 penguins have been given restored sight with this surgery,” Dr. Croft said.

SeaWorld Orlando New Killer Whale Environment Projects

SeaWorld Orlando Killer Whale Announcement

SeaWorld Announces First-Of-Its-Kind Killer Whale Environment and More Than $10 Million In New Funding For Research and Conservation Projects

SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc. announced today that it plans to build new, first-of-its-kind killer whale environments and that it will fund new programs to protect ocean health and killer whales in the wild. The new projects will build on SeaWorld’s legacy of providing state-of-the-art, innovative homes for its animals, and will offer park guests unique and inspiring killer whale encounters for generations to come. As part of its vision for the future, the company also pledged $10 million in matching funds for killer whale research and is embarking on a multi-million dollar partnership focused on ocean health, the leading concern for all killer whales and marine mammals.

“For 50 years, SeaWorld has transformed how the world views marine life. The unprecedented access to marine mammals that our parks provide has increased our knowledge of the ocean and inspired generations,” said Jim Atchison, Chief Executive Officer and President of SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc. “Our new killer whale homes and research initiatives have just as bold a vision: to advance global understanding of these animals, to educate, and to inspire conservation efforts to protect killer whales in the wild.”

Transformational New Environments

SeaWorld Orlando Killer Whale Announcement

The first of the new environments will be built at SeaWorld San Diego where the killer whale environment is planned to have a total water volume of 10 million gallons, nearly double that of the existing facility. With a planned maximum depth of 50 feet, surface area of nearly 1.5 acres and spanning more than 350 feet in length, the new environment will also have views exceeding 40 feet in height, providing guests with the world’s largest underwater viewing experience of killer whales.

Named the Blue World Project because of its size and scope, the new environment will allow for increased engagement with SeaWorld experts through new enriching experiences and other interactive programs. The environment will enhance the educational experience for guests, foster deeper knowledge of killer whales and their ocean environment and inspire them to celebrate and conserve the natural world.

“Through up-close and personal encounters, the new environment will transform how visitors experience killer whales,” said Atchison. “Our guests will be able to walk alongside the whales as if they were at the shore, watch them interact at the depths found in the ocean, or a birds-eye view from above.”

Expanding on SeaWorld’s legacy of leading-edge animal environment design, the enlarged environment will provide killer whales with even more dynamic opportunities.  It will support the whales’ broad range of behaviors and provide choices that can challenge the whales both physically and mentally.  Among other things, it is planned to include a “fast water current” that allows whales to swim against moving water, thus functionally increasing speed and diversity. Innovative features focused on husbandry and animal care will offer SeaWorld’s animal health professionals and independent scientists unique access to the whales that can lead to a better understanding and care of the animals both in the parks and in the wild.

The San Diego environment is expected to open to the public in 2018 with new killer whale homes to follow at SeaWorld Orlando and SeaWorld San Antonio.

“SeaWorld’s capital investment will create a significant number of new jobs in our community and help drive the economy when construction begins at the Orlando park. Beyond that, it will enhance tourism by providing a state-of-the-art experience for visitors while providing valuable new research and educational opportunities in animal health and behavior,” said Representative Daniel Webster (FL-10).

Killer Whale Research

As part of the Blue World Project, SeaWorld has committed $10 million in matching funds focused on threats to killer whales in the wild, especially those identified by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration related to the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whale.  That includes new projects already funded this year: one that will help to understand the hearing ranges of killer whales and the other that will provide insight into nutritional status and reproduction of the Southern Resident Killer Whale.  The matching funds will be in addition to killer whale research conducted by SeaWorld’s scientists, which includes nearly 50 studies to date.

Recognizing that ocean health is a leading concern for killer whales and all marine mammals in the wild, the company also announced it will be embarking on a major multi-million dollar partnership focused on protecting the ocean.  More details of the partnership will be announced in the coming weeks.

Advisory Panel

SeaWorld will also engage an Independent Advisory Panel to bring new perspectives and ideas to the project. The panel will focus on the creation of an environment that maximizes the health and wellbeing of the animals. Given the particular expertise of current panelists and those expected to join, the panel will further advise on integrated research projects that can be conducted within the new environment and foster partnerships within the science and academic communities working in the wild.

Current Advisory Panel members include:

  • Dr. Paul Boyle, Senior Vice President for Conservation and Education, Association of Zoos & Aquariums
  • Dr. Heidi Harley, Professor of Psychology, New College of Florida
  • Dr. Dorian Houser, Director of Conservation and Biological Research, National Marine Mammal Foundation
  • Dr. Linda Lowenstein, Professor Emeritus Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, University of California Davis School of Veterinary Medicine
  • Dr. Shawn Noren, Associate Research Scientist, Institute of Marine Science, University of California Santa Cruz
  • Mr. Tom Otten, Chief Executive Officer, Reef Experience
  • Dr. James F.  Peddie, DVM, Distinguished Faculty Chair, Exotic Animal Training and Management Program, Moorpark College
  • Dr. Paul Ponganis, Research Physiologist, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
  • Dr. Kwane Stewart, Chief Veterinary Officer and National Director, Film and Television Unit, American Humane Association
  • Dr. Pam Yochem, Senior Research Scientist and Executive Vice President, Research, Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute

“Like so many others in science and industry, we are constantly learning more about how we can evolve our knowledge and continue to learn more about these amazing animals and stewardship of those in the wild,” Atchison said. “We look forward to working with these experts to build on these learnings and achieve our vision of increased knowledge of killer whales and global efforts to protect those in the wild.”

SeaWorld Orlando Animal Rescue Returns Sea Turtle

SeaWorld Orlando Animal Rescue Team Returns Rehabilitated Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle

After being medically cleared, SeaWorld Orlando Animal Rescue Team traveled to Washington Oaks Garden State Park in Palm Coast, Florida, just south of St. Augustine, to return a juvenile Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle.

SeaWorld Orlando Animal Rescue

The Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle was rescued in March by a University of Central Florida turtle monitoring group and was taken to SeaWorld Orlando for care and rehabilitation. Upon arrival, the turtle was underweight and lethargic. During its rehabilitation, the SeaWorld Animal Rescue Team treated the sea turtle with antibiotics and fluids. Since arriving at SeaWorld, this sea turtle has gained weight and was medically cleared to be returned today.

So far in 2014, the SeaWorld Orlando Animal Rescue Team has rescued 30 sea turtles and returned 20 sea turtles. Since 1980, SeaWorld Orlando has rescued more than 1,700 turtles and returned more than 1,100.

In collaboration with the government and other members of accredited stranding networks, SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment operates one of the world’s most respected programs to rescue ill and injured marine animals, with the goal to rehabilitate and return to the waters. SeaWorld animal experts have helped more than 23,000 animals in need – ill, injured, orphaned and abandoned – for more than four decades.

For more information, visit SeaWorldCares.com.

If you see an injured marine animal, you can help by calling the FWC hotline at (888) 404-3922 or by dialing *FWC on a cellular device.

SeaWorld Orlando Helps Girls Dreams Come True

SeaWorld Orlando

SeaWorld Orlando is a park that holds a lot of special memories of my childhood and of my own child’s experiences over the years.

And while I see these stories often, this one really touched my heart.

I hope that you enjoy a little dose of awesome this Monday Afternoon!!!

An Inspirational Story About an Amazing Girl and How SeaWorld Orlando is Helping Her Dreams Come True

13-year-old Paralympic swimmer and philanthropist, McClain Hermes, is suffering from progressive vision loss. After being told by doctors that she had less than two years before losing her sight entirely, Hermes has been on a quest to create lasting, visual memories.

On her “visual bucket list” before she loses her sight, Hermes has listed National landmarks, including the Grand Canyon and The District of Columbia, and up close animal connections as her must “sees.”

SeaWorld Orlando

Hermes recently met Maple and Aurek, two beluga whales at SeaWorld Orlando’s Wild Arctic attraction. She also swam with dolphins at Discovery Cove. In her words, “It’s been a great thing to check off my bucket list because now whenever my brother and sister say, “oh look there’s a whale or dolphin,” I can remember how they look, feel, and sound, and how I was able to interact with beluga whales and other animals at SeaWorld. Maple and Aurek were soft and felt like marshmallows and I loved hearing them make different noises through their blowholes” said Hermes.

 httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vLS-roBvlc

“It was incredible to share this experience with McClain and help her touch, feel and hear the beluga whales before she loses her eyesight completely.   At SeaWorld, guests are able to connect with animals every day, but knowing that McClain is losing her eye sight made her visit even more inspiring,” said Kim Downs, animal care specialist who led Hermes’ interaction.

SeaWorld Orlando

There’s more to McClain than an impressive visual bucket list. She’s a swimmer ranked in the top ten nationally in her division. Starting next year she’ll attempt to qualify for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, where she aspires to be the number one Paralympic swimmer in the world.

In 2009, after reading an article about recycling shoes, she was inspired to help her local community. McClain founded Shoes for the Souls, a non-profit organization that collects shoes for residents at Atlanta Mission, a local Georgia shelter. In five years, Hermes and her Shoes for the Souls have collected nearly 10,000 pairs of shoes for those in need.
