*** SPOILER FREE *** Review of The Odd Life of Timothy Green

Having seen The Odd Life of Timothy Green just a few days ago, I’ve been trying to put my finger on the pulse of the movie.  There is so much wrapped into this compact, sweet, lovable, and quirky movie that I don’t feel that simple labels like “comedy” or “drama” are enough, though it clearly has elements of both.  What shines through most in this movie though is its tremendous heart.  There are in this movie no good guys, and no bad guys – there are just people behaving like… people, and yet their lives are all simply transformed by Timothy.

The story was conceived by Ahmet Zappa son of the singer, songwriter, and musician Frank Zappa.  For Disney to put this out under their own brand rather than one of their subsidiaries says a lot about their trust for the material and Zappa.  This trust goes back a few yeas to the creation of Kingdom Comics in 2008 which included a multi-year contract to create new films and rejuvenate old live-action Disney films by first releasing them in graphic novel form.  This is the first new film to be released through this venture.

You are going to cry at this movie.  There is no doubt.  Some of those tears will be from laughing, some will be from sorrow.  But many will come from that place you enter when you let yourself go in the magic of a moment and realize how amazing the world would be if things always could just work this way.  To be able to put our wishes, our hopes and our dreams into a box and have them come true… even if only for a short while.

Those who love the art of storytelling will almost immediately pick up on the O. Henry styling of the story.  There is a twist to the tale, it’s not hidden – the trailers for the movie already give it away.  But the twist is designed to deliver a message and that’s what’s important.  Life is fleeting.  We are here for a moment, and then we’re gone.  But it’s what we do with that moment.  The way in which the lives of those whose lives intertwine with our own are affected by that which we do and the choices that we make.  In the end, this is what matters – so make them count.

The moments of impact Timothy gets to make, are not ones that are chosen for him.  But when they come he accepts them and embraces them all.  Makes the best of the moment for good or for ill.  And with that he transforms the lives of those around him in a way that has no other description than magic.  But it’s not in your face magic.  No, rather it’s the sort of subtle magic that is administered by Mary Poppins or comes riding in on a tornado from Oz.  Right down to magical storms and whimsical winds.

Despite being a family movie, I can’t say that this movie is for everyone.  Some of the themes that run through this are deep and may require explanation to your children.  The emotions in this movie are strong – it could be as much as a two box movie depending on the viewer.   And many people like to avoid that sort of thing.  This movie is also not without its flaws, but at the same time few are worth nitpicking. However, if you can be accepting of a little magic running its course, then I highly recommend seeing this movie.

As much as I’d like to give a star rating for this movie now, you will have to wait until August 27th when I release Episode 86 of the Disney Film Project Podcast for that and a more thorough review.

The Avengers: A Review With Some Spoilers

Being a huge fan of the previous movies in this series, I have been looking forward to The Avengers ever since it was announced. Most movies that are highly promoted and overhyped by the studio rarely live up to the expectations, so there was a little hint of worry looming behind my excitement as I walked into the theater. After the first few minutes, any shred of doubt was gone. The packed theatre was buzzing with anticipations, and erupted in applause and laughter many times throughout the movie. The Avengers more than delivered on everything it promised to be.

This, sixth in this series of movies, begins with Loki devising a way back to Earth with the intent this time of conquering and ruling the people of Earth with the help of his mysterious army of Chitauri. Obsessed with total domination, Loki steals the Tesseract, a mysterious and powerful source of galactic energy, in order to further his conquest. Left with no other options, Nick Fury and the S.H.I.E.L.D agency activates the Avengers initiative to battle this extinction level threat to the human race. The Avengers become a group of unsuspecting heroes, and find themselves with no other option than to work together as a team to defeat Loki and his invading army.

The story seamlessly moves through the sequences evenly balancing out the back stories, character interactions, and action sequences beautifully. Director Joss Whedon does an amazing job both individually fleshing out the characters while maintaining the focus on the ensemble as a whole. Each main character, the lead in their own movie, brings something special to the group without overpowering the other members. Even the minor characters, Black Widow (a minor character from the Iron Man 2) is fleshed out with a more complete back story including new Avengers member Hawkeye.

The combinations of great story, witty dialogue and amazing action sequences make this film a nonstop thrill ride that I want to experience again and again. I know that I most definitely will be seeing Avengers again before it leaves the theater.

War Horse

Normally movie night in our household is comprised of my daughter and I on the couch with a bowl of popcorn enjoying a light hearted, family friendly film.  I realized that I would unfortunately have to go it alone this week when we received War Horse in the mail.  So, after dinner was done, and my little princess was in bed, I sat down to watch.

Being both a lover of history, and a huge fan of Spielberg’s previous war era films (Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List) I was expecting quite a lot from this film.  I was not disappointed.  War Horse was a compelling story that showed the many facets of World War I through the interactions of Joey, the “War Horse”, with a number of characters throughout all facets of the war.  Although this masterfully written and directed story focuses on the uplifting relationships between the horse and the people he meets on his journey, it in no way glazes over the true horror of World War I.  The movie depicts the true nature of the war and the fates of many working animals in the military at the time.  Spielberg does a great job balancing the harsh tone of war with compelling stories, characters, and some lighthearted moments.

I would highly recommend this film to any fans of the period, or of Spielberg’s previous period films.  It has compelling scenes both harsh and uplifting, and is definitely worth the time.

War Horse is available now on DVD and Blu-Ray Combo pack. To stay connected, “Like” the Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/WarHorseMovie, Follow us on twitter @WarHorseMovie, and view videos at www.YouTube.com/WarHorseMovie.

The Muppets

Image Copyright Disney

One of my fondest memories from childhood was watching The Muppet Show on Sunday evenings. I felt like Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and company were a part of my family and we grew up together. I bought each season of the show as it was released on DVD and love reliving some of my favorite sketches such as Pigs in Space and guest stars like Harry Belafonte singing the Banana Boat Song (Day-O). So when it was announced that a new Muppets movie was coming out, I was cautiously optimistic that some of that comedic magic and poignancy from my youth might be recaptured. Luckily, I was not disappointed.

The first time I saw the Muppets I laughed almost uncontrollably at some of the cameos (ahem, Dave Grohl). While I was apprehensive about the introduction of a new Muppet, Walter, I thoroughly enjoyed the journey we as the audience experienced and the film was as a whole very satisfying. Some of my favorite moments included Animal trying to stay “in control” of his emotions, Pepe and Miss Piggy’s Dirty Dancing homage and the throwbacks to the original show like the theater at the studios and Kermit’s Rolodex.

While the movie is primarily a family friendly comedy, there were some touching moments that did cause me to shed a few tears. When the Muppets first revisit the Muppet Studios as a group and enter the theater, it totally tugged at my heartstrings seeing something I loved so much as a child in such disrepair. The moment that really resonated with me was when the Muppets played Rainbow Connection at the telethon. Being a huge fan of the original Muppet Movie, and many of the subsequent movies, this just was the right amount of a fresh take with a nod to the previous movie to strike a nice balance for me.

And if you are a super-fan of The Muppets like I am, the Wocka Wocka Value Pack is the way to go! Included in the pack is a Blu-Ray disc, DVD, a digital copy of the movie, and a digital download of the soundtrack. How can that be wrong???

Another of my favorite aspects of the film that I appreciated even more on the second viewing was the soundtrack. While I didn’t completely love every single song, I did immediately run out to purchase the soundtrack after seeing the movie the first time. As I mentioned, Rainbow Connection is a huge favorite of mine and has been since I was little. The other song I loved was Life’s A Happy Song. Accompanied by a great song and dance number that reminded me of That’s How You Know from the Disney film Enchanted, it was one of the most memorable moments that bookended the movie. Which is another reason that the Wocka Wocka Value Pack of The Muppets rocks, because it comes with a free digital copy of the soundtrack!!!!

There are so many awesome Bonus Features on The Muppets it is insane. Bonus Features include The Longest Blooper Reel Ever Made (In Muppet History––We Think),  Scratching The Surface: A Hasty Examination of the Making of Disney’s “The Muppets”, Explaining Evil: The Full Tex Richman Song, and A Little Screen Test on the way to the Read Through. And if you didn’t absolutely love the The Muppets before, you will after watching these features.

Also on the Blu-Ray disc is a feature called Disney Intermission where when you pause the movie the frame doesn’t just freeze, it shows something special…I really don’t want ruin it…It is just that cool!!!

Overall, I loved the Muppets and found it completely enjoyable. I came out of the theater feeling very much like Life’s A Happy Song and wanted to go back for more. The second viewing was just as much fun, and yes, I cried the second time around, even knowing what was going to happen. I hope that you all felt the same sense of nostalgia mixed with a fresh take on some of our favorite characters from the Muppets. Go out and grab this movie on Blu Ray or DVD to experience this great family friendly film with amazing clarity that was not to be found back when the original was released in the 1970s.

Daddy’s Movie Day – Lady And The Tramp

Personally I have not been as excited for a movie to be re-released from Disney more than Lady and the Tramp.  This was the first Disney animated movie that I ever saw, and it holds a very special place in my heart.  I remember vividly seeing that iconic scene with of Lady and the Tramp sharing the plate of spaghetti outside Tony’s.  When I heard it was going to be released for the 50th anniversary, I couldn’t wait to share my daughters first time seeing it with her.

A classic love story unfolds in the best Disney tradition as a lovely young pedigreed cocker spaniel named Lady, who lives a pampered life, finds herself falling romantically for Tramp, an amorous street-smart pooch without prospects. Although they have fun together on several dates, including a sentimental spaghetti dinner by moonlight at Tony’s restaurant, their relationship is strained not only by Lady’s loyalty to her human family and their newborn baby, but by Tramp’s devil-may-care attitude that eventually gets Lady in trouble and tossed into the dog pound. However, good-hearted Tramp redeems himself by saving the baby from potential harm and thus wins Lady’s love and the affection of her human family.

When my little princess and I sat down to watch this Disney classic I was instantly brought back to my childhood.  The timeless story is as wonderful today as it was 50 years ago, and the animation has never looked better.  We sat through the entire movie watching happily in silence, which is rare for Zoe.

Overall, I love this movie as much as I did 30 years ago when I saw it for the first time.  It’s unique, original story, and wonderful animation makes this a Disney classic that is a must have for anyone’s library.

“Winnie The Pooh” A Review And Contest, Too!!!

“Winnie the Pooh”, available on Disney Blu-Ray and DVD October 25th,  is a whimsical return to the Hundred Acre Wood with all of the characters that we have all grown up knowing and loving with an amazing cast and musical score that revived my  love of the “Winnie the Pooh” stories!!!

“Winnie the Pooh”, directed by Stephen Anderson (Meet The Robinsons) and Don Hall (The Princess and The Frog) and Executive Produced by John Lasseter, is inspired by three stories from A.A. Milne and sends you back to Disney’s classic, hand drawn art that is so comforting to watch. Our only complaint was that the movie is only an hour long! We wanted more!!!!

The cast of voice talent is absolutely amazing! While a lot of the voices are recognizable from other things, the actors have taken care to be respectful of the voices of the original cartoon.

John Cleese serves as our narrator and the story itself features the talents of Jim Cummings as Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, Craig Ferguson as Owl, Tom Kenny as Rabbit, Travis Oates as Piglet, Bud Luckey as Eeyore, Kristen Anderson-Lopez as Kanga, Wyatt Hall as Roo and Huell Howser as Backson and Jack Boulter. I have to say that my favorite was Craig Ferguson as Owl and that I had to get used to Bud Luckey as Eeyore.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zmmSYX6p-s

The amazing musical scores featured throughout the film were created by Tony® Award-winning songwriter Bobby Lopez, and his wife Kristen, who wrote all of the six spirited new songs for Pooh and his pals, including “The Tummy Song,” “A Very Important Thing To Do,” “Everything Is Honey,” “The Winner Song,” “The Backson Song,” and “It’s Gonna Be Great.” Lopez is behind the Broadway hits “Book of Mormon” and  “Avenue Q” and together they’ve written for Nickelodeon and Disney, including the stage version of “Finding Nemo” and composed songs for several episodes of “The Wonder of Pets,” which earned him two Daytime Emmy® Awards in 2006 for Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition.

The original score, a special rendition of the beloved “Winnie the Pooh” theme song for the film was composed by Henry Jackman (“The Da Vinci Code,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” “Monsters vs. Aliens”) and sung by actress, musician, singer and songwriter, Zooey Deschanel (Indie folk band, “She & Him”). Deschanel also provided vocals for
“A Very Important Thing To Do” and “So Long.”

The Blu-Ray is also filled to the brim with TONS of bonus features!!!!

·       Exclusive bonus short “Mini-Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: The Balloon” – In this charming short, Pooh comes up with a daring plan to get a hold of some honey by fooling a group of bees.

·       “The Ballad of Nessie” – The animated short film included in the theatrical release is the heartwarming tale of how Nessie found her new home in the Loch Ness.

·       “Winnie the Pooh and His Story Too” – A fun and informative behind-the-scenes look at the film, designed for the whole family. Hosted by John Cleese (narrator of the film), and with occasional help fromPooh himself, this featurette explores Winnie the Pooh’s history from his beginnings as a character in a book, to his continued life in the movies. The filmmakers reveal how they worked to keep the look of the characters and settings in this movie consistent with their first appearances on-screen in1966. Pooh, being a bear of very little mind, finds much of this confusing, but the Narrator and the filmmakers make it all clear to Pooh – and you!

·       Deleted Scenes introduced by directors, Stephen Anderson and Don Hall – 5 deleted scenes including “The Tummy Song,” “”Rabbit’s Friends and Relations,” “Original Eeyore Intro,” “Original Tigger Intro” and “Pooh Searches for a Tail”

·       Sing-Along with the Movie – Follow the red balloon and changing word colors to seven song lyrics featured in the film.

·       Disney Song Selection – “Winnie the Pooh Theme Song,” “The Tummy Song, “A Very Important Thing To Do,” “The Backson Song,” “It’s Gonna Be Great,” “Everything is Honey” and “The Winner Song Finale”

DVD Bonus Features:

·       “Mini-Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: The Balloon”

·       “The Ballad of Nessie”

·       Deleted scenes introduced by directors, Stephen Anderson and Don Hall – 3 deleted scenes including “The Tummy Song,” “”Rabbit’s Friends and Relations” and “Pooh Searches for a Tail”

Movie Download Bonus Features:

·       “Mini-Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: The Balloon”

·       “The Ballad of Nessie”

·       Deleted Scenes introduced directors. Stephen Anderson and Don Hall – 3 deleted scenes including “The Tummy Song,” “Rabbit’s Friends and Relations” and “Pooh Searches for a Tail”

Jake and The Never Land Pirates First Music Soundtrack and DVD

You may notice that Daddy has been taking some time off from the movie reviews (silly work), so it’s Mommy’s turn again to have some movie time with Princess Zoe!

Now that you know why you are suffering with my review…Let’s get to the fun stuff!!!

A new soundtrack and DVD inspired by Disney Junior’s #1 series Jake and the Never Land Pirates, are planned to set sail this September with Walt Disney Records’ album release of eighteen hook-filled songs from the series and The Walt Disney Studios Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Yo Ho, Mateys Away! DVD release featuring seven episodes from the series

Zoe is a HUGE fan of the show, and she was STOKED when the DVD/Soundtrack came in the mail!!!

If you haven’t seen the show, you are definitely missing something! Jake, Izzy (armed with pixie dust), Cubby, and their parrot Skully set sail in their ship, Bucky, in search of treasures and adventures. However, Captain Hook and the every faithful Mr. Smee are always around causing trouble for the foursome. The episodes are filled with lessons about friendship, problem solving, and tons of fun pirate rock. I really think that Sharky and Bones, of the Never Land Pirate Band, are her favorites! When the songs come on at the end of each episode, she is up and off of the couch in .08 seconds!

The DVD bonus features were fun, and Zoe really got a kick out of the Pirate Party with Pirate-oke, where she got to sing along with her favorite pirate band, and Yo, Ho, You Want To Be A Pirate?, where Jake taught her how to talk like a REAL pirate!

The 7-track CD sampler and pirate eye patch were a total bonus!!! I don’t think that the CD is coming out of the car anytime soon!!!

Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Yo Ho, Mateys Away! is a new favorite in our house!!!

Jake and the Never Land Pirates is cable’s #1 series among Boys 2-5 and is on track to be Disney Channel’s #1 preschool series ever. It is the most co-viewed series among all Disney Junior and Nickelodeon series, with 47% of Moms watching with their preschooler. A music-filled interactive treasure hunt, the series introduces a crew of kid pirates – leader Jake and pals Izzy and Cubby – and follows their Never Land adventures as they work to outwit two infamous characters, the one and only Captain Hook and Smee, from Disney’s classic “Peter Pan.” Every episode features the animated Sharky and Bones characters as they pop up throughout to perform original pirate ditties, and each episode concludes with a live action music video featuring The Never Land Pirate Band.

Written and performed by Loren Hoskins and Kevin Hendrickson, a.k.a. Sharky and Bones of The Never Land Pirate Band, the album features 18 swashbuckling tracks sure to thrill any young pirate. Also included are downloadable activities and games to plan the perfect pirate party, a Sing-Along version of the show’s theme song and a bonus track from a future episode. The deluxe edition includes a pirate bandana. The album arrives at stores and online retailers September 20.

The album features a variety of songs that kids and parents can enjoy together. Songs include the kooky, comical “Hot Lava,” “Aw Coconuts,” “Pirate Password,” and the arrrghhh-rated “Talk Like a Pirate.” Some songs refer to popular characters in the show, such as “What’s Cookin’ Smee,” “Captain Hook (Is A Cranky Crook),” “Tick Tock Croc” and “Bucky’s Shanty.” Others capture the island spirit of Never Land, such as “Castaway on Pirate Island,” “Shipwreck Shuffle” and “Never Sky,” as well as the “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” theme song. All songs can be heard in episodes of the show.

Portland, Oregon-based Hoskins and Hendrickson have been creating pirate rock music for kids of all ages for more than a decade. The duo produced four previous children’s albums and even led their own pirate band. The pirate rockers also provide the musical score for “Jake and the Never Land Pirates.”

The Jake and the Never Land Pirates soundtrack will be available wherever music is sold on September 20. For more information on Walt Disney Records’ releases, please visit www.Disney.com/music , become a fan at www.Facebook.com/disneymusic and follow at www.Twitter.com/disneymusic .

Dumbo: 70th Anniversary Edition Flying In Today

Dumbo: 70th Anniversary Edition is out today for the first time in Blu-Ray high definition featuring 7.1 Digital Theater System High-Def Surround Sound today and I couldn’t be more excited!!!

While I have always loved the story of Dumbo, it means a lot more to me now that I am a Mom. We have all those ‘Mom’ moments where we have wanted to protect and hold our kids like Jumbo held Dumbo in her ears. I know I am a sap, but I was a complete mess during this scene!!!

Also, I think that this might be the beginning of my fear of clowns!!! These guys were so mean and creepy!!!

What I love the most is that just when you think that Dumbo has reached the lowest point of the movie when the crows are picking on him so harshly, the story turns and he finds out that he CAN fly and makes the most of his talents. I have to admit that I laughed my buns off when Dumbo swoops above the clowns and the other elephants and gives them a taste of their own medicine!

Another super interesting fact about Dumbo:70th Anniversary Edition is that the Walt Disney Studios Restoration Team turned to the US Library of Congress who store the original 70 year old nitrate camera negative in their film vaults, and for reference, to an original 1941 ‘release’ print, held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Using this rare nitrate “dye-transfer” Technicolor print for color reference, the team was able to restore Dumbo to the color settings most likely approved by Walt Disney himself, which will be seen in their full splendor for the first time in 70 years, on the Blu-Ray debut.

In addition, the rare film print (housed as part of the UCLA Film and Television Archives collection) proved to be the earliest surviving generation of the original audio for Dumbo which provided a unique source from which to build the new Disney Enhanced Home Theatre (DEHT) mix for the Blu-Ray release.

Plus there are TONS of extra added bonus features on this Blu-Ray/DVD Set! Interactive games, deleted scenes, bonus shorts, and a ‘Taking Flight: The Making of Dumbo’ talks about the importance of Dumbo in animation history.

After having the opportunity to revisit this movie as an adult, I can honestly say that the story means so much more to me and that the re-mastered quality makes me appreciate Dumbo so much more than I thought I ever could!

A look into the Indian Culture with Three Fun Movies!

One of the great things about living around Walt Disney World is that we are never lacking for visitors and house guests.  Recently we hosted some friends who had recently spent a number of months working in India.  They told us stories about their first hand experiences within the culture including India’s vast film industry.

Ironically enough, Disney’s first set of Indian films for North America came to the house the same week.  It was great to watch the trio of films, and get insight into another culture with people who had firsthand experience and insight.

Although it was a different experience from what we were used to, the films were quite enjoyable and easy to follow despite the subtitles. We really enjoyed sharing this look into foreign films with friends, and it is something we would definitely do again!!!

Daddy’s Movie Day – Gnomeo and Juliet

Coming from a theater background, I have always had a great appreciation for all of Shakespeare’s works.  Seeing the greatest love story ever told meets garden gnomes come in the mail didn’t leave me with great expectations.  Of course in true fashion, my little princess saw it, and immediately had to watch.

From the beginning, I was pleasantly surprised.  This comical, off the wall adaptation of the bards classic tragedy was much better than expected.   The story is set in the gardens  of feuding neighbors kept by families of garden gnomes and lawn ornaments.  The comic antics ensue as everything from pink plastic flamingos, lawnmower races, to covert missions to destroy flower beds unfold.

From the director of Shreck 2 comes your chance to step into the secret world of garden gnomes – Gnomeo & Juliet.  Perfect for the whole family, this fresh and funny makeover of one of the world’s most timeless stories features music from Sir Elton John, and the voice talents of Emily Blunt, James McAvoy and Sir Michael Cane.  Caught up in a fued between neighbors, Gnomeo and Juliet must overcome as many obstacles an their namesakes.  But with flamboyant pink flamingos and epic lawnmower races, can this young couple find lasting happiness?  Complete withhilarious never-before-seen bonus features, Gnomeo & Juliet is an out-of-the-ordinary animated comedy your entire familty will love.  We just gnome it!

Although nothing aside from the main characters names follow the original story, something pointed out as Gnomeo has a conversation with a statue of Shakespeare, it is a cute movie with lots of laughs.

Zoe and I really enjoyed it, and would recommend it for anyone looking for a laugh!

Gnomeo & Juliet available on Two-Disc Blu-ray™/ DVD Combo on May 24, 2011. The greatest love story ever told, starring…garden gnomes? In “Gnomeo & Juliet,” Shakespeare’s revered tale gets a comical, off-the-wall makeover. Directed by Kelly Asbury (co-director of “Shrek 2”) and showcasing both classic and original songs by Elton John, the film features the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt as Gnomeo and Juliet.
