Discovery Cove Guests Swim with the Fishes…Help Save the Reefs

Guests who swim among tropical fish at Discovery Cove in Orlando now have a new connection to the world’s oceans: When they swim in the park’s Grand Reef, or participate in the SeaVenture® underwater dive experience, they are surrounded by — and supporting – a conservation research program that aims to protect the world’s most fragile ocean reefs. 

Rising Tide Conservation is an innovative initiative – started by SeaWorld and now including universities, professional aquarists, aquaculture facilities and retail pet supply companies as partners —   that promotes efforts to breed and raise marine tropical fish in aquaculture facilities rather than collecting them in the wild. Collection of marine tropical fish can cause damage to both the reef and the ecosystem it sustains.  

Discovery Cove directly participates in the program by collecting and donating fish eggs that otherwise would not hatch and purchasing fish that have been raised through the program. The eggs that are collected are sent to partner laboratories in the program to be utilized in breeding research. 

The Grand Reef at Discovery Cove, which all guests can swim and snorkel in, is now home to hundreds of fish that have been aquacultured through this initiative, and hundreds more that are involved in the research program by providing eggs.

Additionally, new this year, guests who participate in the SeaVenture program also will directly help support Rising Tide Conservation, as the park is donating five percent of every program purchased. 

“Rising Tide Conservation is a forward-thinking, innovative program that will have long-term, positive impacts on whole reef-based ecosystems and we are proud of our company’s long-held support of it,” said Discovery Cove Vice President Stewart Clark. “Now guests, too, can see firsthand – and be a part of – the efforts of multiple groups working together to help save reefs.”

Two new announcements feed the frenzy for the coming of the hypercoaster

Two announcements about the highly anticipated Mako has thrill ride enthusiasts in a frenzy!

The new coaster, which will be Orlando’s tallest, fastest, and longest hypercoaster, will take riders on an adventure like no other as the attraction now has a grand opening date of June 10, 2016.

The countdown in on!!!!!

Feeding the frenzy is a new live presentation in the park for guests who want a sneak peek starting now. The new presentation gives guests a preview of the ride design, construction and experience, and also shares interesting educational facts about sharks in the wild that need our help.

The preview presentation, called Mako Rising, is now being shown at Nautilus Theater daily at 11:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.  Audience members enjoy complimentary snacks as they relax in the cool indoor theater and participate in the informative, interactive experience. All audience guests also will receive special in-park offers and the opportunity to win a prize during the presentation.

Discovery Cove now lets guests design the perfect vacation package

SeaWorld Orlando Mako Lead Car Unveiled

This Summer SeaWorld Orlando Mako will take its first swim as the centerpiece of the Sharks Realm, but we got to see the lead car and it was everything I hoped it would be and more!

Mako is a hypercoaster who’s height will top 200 feet with speeds reaching 73 mph on a track that’s nearly a mile long that is filled with tight turns giving a weightless feeling to riders at the top of each hill.

What I was really excited to see at the unveiling of the Lead Car was that it was a beautiful blend of design, form, and function.

In a collaboration between SeaWorld’s animal experts and ride engineers, the car is inspired by the physiology of an actual Mako shark, including five gills on each side, eye placement, and a sleek hydro-dynamic look.

Also, the colors featured on the lead car also evoke a sense of the ocean where the Mako Shark lurks. I love it!

To reach speeds of 73 mph, Mako is going to have to have some fast wheels! The ride vehicle’s wheels are comprised of a special compound that reduces friction to create a smooth, consistent, and relentlessly fast ride from beginning to end.

What I am REALLY looking forward to during Mako is the ‘air time’, the feeling of weightlessness or negative gravity force experienced, and the ride vehicle’s design is super open for a heightened sense of freedom and increased mobility.

When you look at Mako’s seat, the first thing that you will notice is that the only restraint is a lap guard on their lower body, which allows for the riders’ upper bodies to be free.

I cannot wait to explore the Sharks Realm and take my first ride on SeaWorld Orlando Mako, and I look forward to bringing you even more news about its opening details soon!

Then on Sunday, February 21, legendary and founding member of the rock group Styx, Dennis DeYoung will perform.

Wild Days Event Starts This Weekend at SeaWorld Orlando

Each Wild Days Weekend has a new animal theme for animal lovers

SeaWorld Orlando kicks off the new year with Wild Days, presented by Coca-Cola, the popular annual event that connects guests in even more ways with animals and the natural, wild world. The event is included with park admission and takes place three weekends in January (Jan. 16-17, Jan. 23-24 and Jan. 30-31). Each weekend is hosted by different animal experts, and features new educational shows – from orcas to wildlife rescue – and even more up-close animal experiences, meet-and-greet opportunities and interactive education stations.

Three Wild Days Weekends Themes:

January 16-17:  “Wild Weekend with Jack Hanna”

World-renowned animal expert “Jungle Jack” Hanna hosts the first weekend. Guests can meet and learn about amazing animals from Jack, and hear about his unique travels and personal experiences.

SeaWorld has rescued more than 27,000 animals over 50 years, and these amazing animal stories are featured weekly on the popular Saturday-morning ABC TV series “Sea Rescue.” Hear first-hand accounts of marine animal rescues, rehabilitations and returns by SeaWorld’s Animal Rescue Team, heroes and partners featured on the show.

Every Wild Days Weekend Includes:

New “Ocean Discovery” killer whale presentation – Guests can learn more about killer whales, also called orcas, and other species of whales during a special educational show. This interactive, 30-minute presentation teaches guests about the animals’ adaptations, habitats and behavior. (Note: This special presentation is in addition to the popular “One Ocean” shows scheduled throughout the day.)

New “Inspiring Stories” pre-shows – The SeaWorld Animal Training Team has some of the most fascinating jobs in the world. Guests can learn what it takes to care for animals that call SeaWorld home and how caring for them has helped with the rescue and rehabilitation of wild animals that need help.  “Inspiring Stories” will take place at the beginning of three of the park’s popular shows: Blue Horizons, Pets Ahoy and Clyde & Seamore’s Sea Lion High. Meet our Animals – Throughout the park, even more trainers, educators and animal care staff are stationed to share information and stories about the animals in our care and provide up-close meet and greets, scheduled feedings and fun surprises. Check park maps for times and locations. 

Explore Zones – More than 14 fun and interactive education stations can be discovered throughout the park, featuring games and hands-on experiences that teach guests about animals and what they can do to protect the wild world in their own lives.
