Finding Disney in New York City

Recently I took my first trip to New York City in December. This was a pretty big deal for me since I’d driven by it, flown through it, and even lived upstate for years, and never set foot on the island of Manhattan until a couple months ago. I finally made this trip happen, but wanted to squeeze in some Disney into my vacation to the Big Apple.

Although we weren’t catching a Broadway show this trip, everyone knows there have been many hits from Disney in New York City from Beauty and the Beast, to Newsies, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, Aida, The Lion King, and Tarzan. I did get to go by the New Amsterdam Theatre many times since we were staying just a few blocks from Times Square, so of course I had to get my picture in front of the Aladdin posters. Also in Times Square is a large Disney Store with an escalator that is fun to ride if for other reason than to see the beautiful lanterns from Tangled and the decor. Going to the second floor to see more exclusive NYC merchandise is a good reason too. I ended up getting an awesome New York City shirt at the Disney Store.

Not a lot of people realize this, but Walt Disney lived in New York City for a period of time. He had a place in Greenwich Village, where Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. had also lived at one point, called Twin Peaks at 102 Bedford St. This is just a couple houses down from where the Friends building exterior shots are. It is a very cool neighborhood where Cary Grant also lived. This was one of my favorite places in the city that seemed a bit more chill, aside from all the tour groups trying to take pictures outside of Monica and Rachel’s apartment.

There are also a ton of Disney tv and movie connections to New York City. Every time I’d catch a glimpse of the Chrysler Building, I’d think of the Disney/ABC TV 1999 Adaptation of Annie, which is my favorite version. Of course, the Avengers, and Captain America were on my mind anytime I rode the subway and saw signs for Brooklyn, or when I was near Grand Central Terminal where their final battle is in the first movie. The Empire State Building reminded me of James and the Giant Peach, and I thought of Enchanted when I went by Central Park. When I was in the Village, I had to look for Waverly Place and see if there were any Wizards around, but I didn’t find any (Selena Gomez must have been busy). There are many more set in the city like Oliver and Company, Bolt, The Rescuers have their headquarters under the United Nations, the tv shows Jessie, and Girl Meets World were also set in New York City.

Now even with the Disney Cruise Line having a port with departures leaving from New York City, it is even easier to find little bits of Disney magic in the city. There are new Broadway shows in development like Frozen. The ABC Studios at Times Square where Good Morning America broadcasts live during the week often feature actors from Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar movies that debut soon. You also have Adventures by Disney with a New York City Itinerary that lets you see Aladdin, attend a taping of GMA, museums, restaurants, free time to explore the city and more! There are a variety of ways to experience Disney in NYC and I’m glad I finally got to see a few of them, but there are so many more. The new Festival of the Arts at Epcot has me clamoring to get back to see a show on Broadway after seeing these fantastic performances.

Aquatica, SeaWorld’s Waterpark is usually warm and tropical, but for one day only they are chilling down their wave pool so the brave of heart can experience the “thrill of the chill” while supporting a great cause.

On Saturday, February 11, 2017, more than a thousand Plungers will participate in the annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Florida, and there is still plenty of time to join in this unique, wacky, and family-friendly event. In addition to jumping into cold water for a good cause, a highlight of the annual event is the array of crazy costumes Plungers are encouraged to wear in the name of fun. To take the Plunge, individually or with a team, register at www.plungefl.org. Each person who raises a minimum of $100 may take the Plunge.

Special Olympics Florida Polar Plunge at Aquatica

Warm-hearted Floridians will be freezin’ for a very good reason:  all proceeds raised by Polar Plungers will support Special Olympics Florida, which provides year-round sports training and competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. In its eighth year, the event has raised more than $1.5 million dollars for athletes.

All registered Plungers will receive a commemorative T-shirt, two spectator passes so friends and family can watch the Plunge, and passes to stay and enjoy Aquatica all day (the rest of the park is heated).

The Council of 101 is proud to present the 35th annual Antiques Vintage & Garden Show, combining fine antiques, art, jewelry, vintage and unique collectibles, garden blooms and more into one outstanding three-day show at the Orlando Museum of Art February 17-19, 2017. The event will feature more than two dozen antiques and vintage dealers from around the country.

Tranquilo Golf Course hosts Diamond Resorts Invitational with PGA Tour Champions, LPGA Players, and celebrities this January

Tranquilo Golf Club, located at Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort, will be the host venue for the 2nd annual Diamond Resorts Invitational benefitting Florida Hospital for Children and taking place January 13-15, 2017. The three-day tournament will be nationally televised on Golf Channel.

The event brings together up to 27 PGA TOUR Champions players, three LPGA players, and 50 celebrities from the sports and entertainment industry to compete side-by-side for purses totaling USD 1.25 million. PGA TOUR Champions players will compete for USD 750,000 over the 54-hole tournament, while celebrities will play for a USD 500,000 purse. The tournament will utilise a Modified Stableford scoring format, which awards points as opposed to strokes, encouraging players to make the most out of every hole and creating a heightened sense of anticipation for fans.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to host the Diamond Resorts Invitational and to welcome this world-class tournament to Tranquilo Golf Club,” said Thomas Steinhauer, Regional Vice President and General Manager of Four Seasons Resort Orlando. “It is a distinct honour to take part in an event that will benefit Florida Hospital for Children and leave a lasting charitable impact in our community.”

Tranquilo Golf Club

Tranquilo Golf Club at Four Seasons Resort Orlando is named to reflect the Spanish revival style of the Resort and pay homage to the Florida landscape, such as the southern live oak trees that are found throughout the course. Originally built in 1992 and designed by Tom Fazio, the golf course was enhanced by Fazio for its October 2014 reopening. Enhancements included creating a completely new hole and renovated bunkers, plus improved visibility and airflow by enhancing the landscape design, in addition to a fully renovated clubhouse.  The course is a par 71 and plays to 6,901 yards. Home to abundant wildlife, the course is certified by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary program for golf by the National Audubon Society.

“It’s very exciting for Tranquilo Golf Club to host this special tournament in its second year and to be put in the national spotlight on the Golf Channel,” said Charlie Kent, Director of Golf at Four Seasons Resort Orlando. “Our team has been working hard over the past few months to ensure the course is in impeccable condition for this main event. Celebrate with Tiffany Windows in the park, Christmas Eve Open House, and live music on Friday Nights

The holiday season at the Morse Museum begins just after Thanksgiving when Harpist Bizarre Quartet helps the Museum launch a festive schedule of free events on Friday nights, including live music, tours, and an art demonstration.

For six consecutive Friday evenings during the holidays (November 25 through December 30), visitors can enjoy not only free admission from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. but live music from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. In addition, at 7 p.m. on December 2, 9, and 16, the Morse will offer curator tours of the exhibition Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Laurelton Hall. The December 9programming also includes a family tour of selected galleries and a demonstration on the art of making pottery with a free take-home art activity for participants.

On Thursday, December 1, the Morse and the City of Winter Park will present the 38th annual Christmas in the Park in downtown Winter Park. At this free event, always a highlight of the holiday season in Winter Park, the Morse lights up nine Tiffany windows in Central Park and sponsors the Bach Festival Choir, Youth Choir, and Brass Ensemble in an outdoor concert.

Admission to the Museum also will be free for a Christmas Eve open house, Saturday,December 24.

The Morse Museum, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this season, houses the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany, including the chapel interior he designed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and art and architectural elements from his Long Island estate, Laurelton Hall.

In the Museum’s galleries, visitors will also find exhibits of American art pottery; Arts and Crafts furnishings; late 19th- and early 20th-century American paintings; and leaded-glass windows and lamps by other artists of the period. In its new exhibition Celebrating 75 Years—Pathways of American Art at the Morse Museum, the Museum presents a range of objects that illustrate the breadth and depth of the collection assembled by Hugh and Jeannette McKean over five decades.

Museum hours from November through April are 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday; and l p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Regular admission is $6 for adults, $5 seniors, $1 for students, and free for children under 12. All visitors receive free admission from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays. The Red Hot Chili Peppers announced additional dates on their 2017 North American Tour in support of their 11th studio album, the worldwide number one album, “The Getaway.“ The Getaway Tour kicks off January 5, 2017 in San Antonio, TX. Red Hot Chili Peppers play Orlando’s Amway Center on April 26, 2017. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, November 11 at 10 a.m.

One of the most successful acts in rock history, Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is Anthony Kiedis (lead singer), Flea (bassist), Chad Smith (drummer) and Josh Klinghoffer (guitarist), have sold more than 60 million albums, including five multi-platinum LPs. They have won four Grammy Awards including Best Rock Album for “Stadium Arcadium,” Best Rock Performance by a duo or group for “Dani California,” Best Rock Song for “Scar Tissue,” and Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal for “Give It Away.” The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2012. The band’s latest studio album, “The Getaway,” was released by Warner Bros. Records on June 17, 2016.

“The Getaway” debuted at number one on the Billboard Album Sales chart and at number two on the Billboard Top 200 chart upon its release in June. “The Getaway” marks the Grammy Award-winning band’s seventh top 10 album and third number two on the Top 200 chart. With a swarm of the undead ambling around, Boardwalk Bowl is calling all would-be zombie hunters to help defeat the zombies with a new, one-of-a-kind attraction.
The shooting-gallery style attraction fills 4,000-square-feet of Boardwalk Bowl, and it incorporates lifelike animated zombies that make perfect target practice.

Zombie Boardwalk players take aim at the targets in a rapid-fire game to see if they have what it takes to survive. There are two teams, and up to 10 players can play at once. The game is recommended for those 16 and older.
“This attraction is truly the first of its kind, and it offers players an experience they can’t get anywhere else in Orlando,” said Keith Baldwin, the regional general manager of Aloma Bowling Centers. “Zombies are popular right now, and we’re excited to offer people the chance to see if they could survive like in their favorite TV show or movie.”
Guests will have the chance to try it for free, too. For one day only, on Halloween, Boardwalk Bowl is offering guests who like their Facebook page a free pass to the attraction.
Zombie Boardwalk was designed and installed by Fear Fest, Ken Spriggs and Tyler Norman. It is the latest in a long line of entertainment offered by Boardwalk Bowl. The venue also offers bowling, an arcade, a comedy club, billiards and a full service restaurant and bar, Brooklyn South.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer announced that legendary musician, Billy Joel returns to Orlando’s Amway Center on Friday, January 27, 2017. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, October 21 at 10 a.m.

“I’m excited to announce the return of Billy Joel, one of music’s most-revered musicians,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “As a leading destination for world-class entertainment, the Amway Center continues to attract some of the world’s most renowned artists and we are honored to have him in Orlando again.”

Latin music international superstar, Marc Anthony, will embark on a 10-show U.S. tour. Marc Anthony Live! will take fans on a journey through Anthony’s award-winning musical catalogue like never before, and he will interpret some of his personal favorites. Anthony returns to Orlando’s Amway Center on Sunday, November 20. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, August 5 at 10 a.m.

Annual School Supply Drive is underway now through August 7

The Central Florida Krispy Kreme locations are teaming up with The Salvation Army for the annual ‘Stuff the Bus’ campaign which looks to make this time of year sweeter for local families in need. This unique school supply drive helps local students gear up for a successful academic year by easing the high cost of materials.

“Krispy Kreme is honored to have the opportunity to help hundreds of students make a fun and easy transition back-to-school,” says Jenny Bellanca, vice president of operations for Florida Family Foods LLC, an authorized franchisee of Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation. “The timing is perfect as supporters can take advantage of Florida Tax Free Weekend on August 5 through7 to purchase donations.”
