Take a Peek at The BFG

The Walt Disney Studios Movies Logo

The talents of three of the world’s greatest storytellers – Roald Dahl, Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg – finally unite to bring Dahl’s beloved classic “The BFG” to life. Directed by Spielberg, Disney’s “The BFG” tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country.

The BFG
Walt Disney and Roald Dahl two of the world’s greatest storytellers, in Hollywood in 1942.

“I think it was kind of genius of Roald Dahl to be able to empower the children. It was very, very brave of him to introduce that combination of darkness and light which was so much Disney’s original signature in a lot of their earlier works like in ‘Dumbo,’ ‘Fantasia,’ ‘Snow White’ and ‘Cinderella,’ and being able to do scary, but also be redemptive at the same time and teach a lesson, an enduring lesson, to everyone, it was a wonderful thing for Dahl to have done, and it was one of the things that attracted me to want to direct this Dahl book,” says Spielberg.

The BFG (Mark Rylance), while a giant himself, is a Big Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part. Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the BFG prefers Snozzcumber and Frobscottle. Upon her arrival in Giant Country, Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, is initially frightened of the mysterious giant who has brought her to his cave, but soon comes to realize that the BFG is actually quite gentle and charming, and, having never met a giant before, has many questions. The BFG brings Sophie to Dream Country where he collects dreams and sends them to children, teaching her all about the magic and mystery of dreams.

httpv://youtu.be/VG5MtenlP-A

Having both been on their own in the world up until now, their affection for one another quickly grows. But Sophie’s presence in Giant Country has attracted the unwanted attention of the other giants, who have become increasingly more bothersome. Says Spielberg, “It’s a story about friendship, it’s a story about loyalty and protecting your friends and it’s a story that shows that even a little girl can help a big giant solve his biggest problems.” Sophie and the BFG soon depart for London to see the Queen (Penelope Wilton) and warn her of the precarious giant situation, but they must first convince the Queen and her maid, Mary (Rebecca Hall), that giants do indeed exist. Together, they come up with a plan to get rid of the giants once and for all.

The BFG
Ruby Barnhill stars as Sophie in Disney’s fantasy-adventure THE BFG, directed by Steven Spielberg and based on the beloved novel by Roald Dahl.

Roald Dahl’s “The BFG” (Big Friendly Giant) was first published in 1982 and has been enchanting readers of all ages ever since. Dahl’s books, which also include “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “James and the Giant Peach” and “Matilda,” are currently available in 58 languages and have sold over 200 million copies worldwide. Originally created as a bedtime story, “The BFG” was Dahl’s own favorite of all his stories. “It was very important for us to be loyal to the language,” says Spielberg, “and the great writer Melissa Mathison, who also wrote ‘E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,’ wrote “The BFG.”

“The BFG” opens in U.S. theaters on July 1, 2016, the year that marks the 100th anniversary of Dahl’s birth.

A Visit To The Star Wars Launch Bay For Beginners

Star Wars Launch Bay Disney's Hollywood Studios

Visiting the newly opened Star Wars Launch Bay at Disney’s Hollywood Studios can seem intimidating if you aren’t familiar familiar with the Star Wars Saga, but fear not because it is actually a really great place to start your Star Wars Fandom if you keep a few things in mind!

The first thing to know is that there is no shame in admitting that you aren’t a huge Star Wars fan! After the initial gasp, you will find that the only thing that Star Wars fans are more passionate about than the movies is sharing their love of the movies!

Now that you’re ready for your visit to the Star Wars Launch Bay, here are a few things to do to make your visit awesome!

1. Bring a friend who is familiar with Star Wars with you.

While visiting the parks alone is always fun, having a friend visit with you who is familiar with Star Wars is a great resource for any questions you may have along the way.

Star Wars Launch Bay Disney's Hollywood Studios

2. Once you arrive at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, head directly to the ABC Soundstage to watch ‘Path of the Jedi’.

This dramatic 10 minute film compiles exhilarating Star Wars movie moments to tell the tale of the Jedi Order’s fall and return.

For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Order protected the galaxy and brought peace to the Galactic Republic—with the help of a mysterious power called the Force. A young Jedi named Anakin Skywalker—secretly influenced by the scheming Darth Sidious—turned to the Dark Side of the Force and brought ruin to the Jedi. Anakin became the dreaded Darth Vader and Darth Sidious became the evil Emperor Palpatine.

A generation passed and Anakin’s children, Luke and Leia, joined the Rebel Alliance to oppose the tyranny of the Galactic Empire. With the help of a charming rogue named Han Solo, Luke and Leia succeeded in defeating the Empire and turning Darth Vader away from the Dark Side.

Star Wars: Path of the Jedi retells this epic saga and hints at what’s next! The Star Wars story continues in the new movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens—Luke, Leia and Han return along with a new cast of brave heroes and dastardly villains.

3. Don’t skip the line to enter the Star Wars Launch Bay.

Star Wars Launch Bay Disney's Hollywood Studios

Why it may be extremely tempting, don’t skip the line to line to enter the Star Wars Launch Bay through the Launch Bay Theater. because the queue is FULL of great details and images!

4. Get Hyped by watching the ‘Behind-the-Scenes’ short film in the Launch Bay Theater!

Inside this stellar screening room, watch a stirring short film celebrating the Star Wars saga. Running continuously throughout the day, this 10-minute “behind-the-scenes” movie includes exclusive interviews with the directors, writers, producers and other key players responsible for bringing the Star Wars galaxy to life.

Now why will you get hyped? I’m glad you asked!

The short film’s interviews are a great glimpse into the passion that the creators have for Star Wars with peeks at the movies.

5. When you are waiting in line for the amazing Meet and Greets in the Star Wars Launch Bay, make sure you pay attention to the trivia that is playing on the screens.

While the Meet and Greet queue itself is full of great props and replicas from Star Wars, along the walls you will find screens playing Star Wars Trivia. This is a great opportunity to learn details from the movies and to find out even more by asking questions.

6. Learn to read Aurebesh…No really…do it!

Star Wars Launch Bay Disney's Hollywood Studios
Super huge thanks to Christie for letting me use her photo! You can find her on Instagram and Twitter!

Along the walls of the Star Wars Launch Bay you’ll see sayings from the movies in Aurebesh, and if you ask a Cast Member they may have the Aurebesh alphabet with our alphabet to help you ‘decode’ the messages.

7. Take your time!

The Launch Bay is full of great galleries chocked full of costumes, props, models, actual items from the movies, and more so make sure you take your time to read all the plaques and to ask the near-by Cast Members questions.

8. Bring something to trade with the Jawas.

It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but bringing something to trade with the Jawas is always a ton of fun!

Star Wars Launch Bay Disney's Hollywood Studios

The Jawas love shiny things, don’t we all really, however you can see in my video that I traded an On the Go in MCO button and things went swimmingly!

9. After you’ve had the full Star Wars Launch Bay experience, pick a character that you really liked to learn more about before Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens on December 18, 2015!

Find your favorite character, find out more about them, buy some fun merchandise, and have fun…just keep away from Bobba Fett…he’s all mine!!!

Madame Tussauds Orlando Welcomes YouTube Stars SMOSH

Madame Tussauds  adds the comedy duo and YouTube sensations are the first digital media stars to be honored by the celebrity wax attraction

Madame Tussauds Orlando has rolled out the red carpet for its newest wax figures of digital celebrities Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox, the duo behind powerhouse comedy brand SMOSH.

The figures will be featured inside the Orlando attraction’s film zone in a special set featuring a green screen, which encourages fans to select between numerous SMOSH-centric backdrops as well as graphic elements to enhance their photo experiences. Images and videos taken will be available to fans via email or text to share and preserve their experiences with SMOSH.

Madame Tussauds artists met with the duo to take hundreds of measurements so they could create the most accurate and lifelike representation of SMOSH. The SMOSH figures are dressed in clothing personally selected and donated by Padilla and Hecox. The figures were originally unveiled in California at the world premiere of SMOSH: The Movie this past summer.

“What an honor it is to be recognized and chosen for Madame Tussauds [as the] first YouTube wax figures in their 250 year history,” said Hecox and Padilla during the initial unveiling. “To have the big reveal take place on the red carpet at the premiere of our first movie just made this eventful day even more memorable.”

Named as one of the top-ranking celebrities by teens in a survey commissioned by Variety Magazine and supported by over 30 million subscribers across the brand’s multiple YouTube channels, SMOSH represents a new, community-driven sector of digital entertainment.

Smosh’s 3,000-plus videos have accrued 7.4 billion views. Their first video, released in November 2005, the Pokémon Theme Music Video catapulted them to success. It became the most-viewed video on YouTube at that time, and has since gained 24.7 million views. SMOSH has released four studio albums, Sexy Album (2010), If Music Were Real (2011), Smoshtastic (2012) and The Sweet Sound of Smosh (2013).

10 Things To Know On The Go: ICE! Featuring Twas The Night Before Christmas

Things to Know On the Go Header Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party Epcot Food and Wine Festival Gaylord Palms ICE!

10 Things To Know On The Go:

ICE! Featuring Twas The Night Before Christmas

It’s no secret that I love experiencing Christmas at Gaylord Palms, and that going to ICE! is something I look forward to every year.

So being somewhat of an ICE!pert, I thought I would share 10 Things to Know On The Go to help make your visit to ICE! featuring ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas awesome!

1. 9 DEGREES!

Christmas at Gaylord Palms 2015 ICE!

Yes you read that correctly, ICE! is 9 Degrees! And while the use of a lovely blue parka is included in your admission, you will want to plan your visit inside ICE! to last around 30-40 minutes to ensure that you aren’t uncomfortable during the experience.

2. Dress

While the temperature inside the attraction is chilly, dressing to be comfortable both inside and out can be a bit of a challenge as you may be walking into the Gaylord Palms from temperatures near 80.

Christmas at Gaylord Palms ICE! 2015

My best suggestion is to wear lots of layers and to have a change of shoes in the car for after your visit, as it will feel a lot warmer outside when you are done.

3. Shoes

Now some of this shoe talk may be common sense, but I have seen it all so I wanted to make sure you’re prepared.

Closed toe shoes are required to enter the attraction, but don’t feel like you have to wear boots because the walkways are carpeted.

Christmas at Gaylord Palms ICE! 2015

I suggest wearing a pair of comfortable shoes that you are comfortable walking in that can be worn with thick socks.

Cold feet are no fun!

4. Taking Pictures

Taking pictures inside ICE! is a lot of fun, and you will want to take a ton of them!

Try to keep your phone as close to your body as possible when it isn’t in use to keep it warm, because the colder your battery it is the quicker it drains.

Christmas at Gaylord Palms 2015 ICE! Christmas at Gaylord Palms 2015 ICE!

You can also expect to experience a “fogging” of the lens when exiting from ICE! into warmer temperatures. This, however, usually goes away once the camera warms up.

Please check the manufacturer information regarding the cold tolerance of your camera equipment.

5. Ice Slides

What would a visit be without a trip down one of the 4 Ice Slides located inside the attraction.

There are 2 ‘adult’ slides which are larger and 2 ‘Child’ slides appropriate for little ones under 4 years or under 40” which are a ton of fun.

Christmas at Gaylord Palms ICE! 2015

Just make sure that you follow the directions of the slide operators and make sure you are prepared to stay in this room for quite some time as one slide is never enough.

IMG_5344

My pro-tip for sliding is to make sure you get a slightly larger parka before you enter the attraction, because you can sit on the parka and lean slightly back to travel a little faster down the slide.

6. On the Blocks

‘Chill out’ at On The Blocks—the exclusive bar inside ICE!  where Adults 21+ can enjoy a sampling of Jackson Morgan Southern Cream and Goose Island Beer plus a choice of a Maker’s Mark or Absolut specialty drink, or Hidden Crush Cabernet or Chardonnay, served in a souvenir glass—yours to keep!

Christmas at Gaylord Palms ICE! 2015

Inside On the Blocks you will also find ambient lighting, music, and fun photo opportunities.

There is an additional cost of $15.95, which includes gratuity, to go inside On the Blocks, but it is a great way to add a VIP touch to your visit!

7. Wheelchairs & Strollers

The ICE! attraction is accessible by both wheelchairs and strollers. Although a limited number of wheelchairs are available on site, to minimize waiting times you are encourage to bring your own.

8. Cirque Dreams UnWrapped and More!

Christmas at the Gaylord Palms is MUCH more than just ICE! You can check out all that there is to experience here.

A Day Celebrating Holidays Around the World At Epcot

On Friday, November 27, Epcot began their holiday festivities with their annual Holidays Around the World line up. This post will be extra picture heavy as I think they tell the story better than I could.

My family and I like to make a day of the special events each year. We always make reservations for the Candlelight Processional Dinner Package and spend the day going around World Showcase listening to the different storytellers. I love looking at all the decorations that are country-specific too. We also make sure to sample some of the special holiday treats that are available – make sure to pick up a passport!

All of the countries feature a special holiday performer or storyteller (or two). We can never fit in all the storytellers in one day, but I have seen all of them at least once before. There are descriptions posted at each country that are worth a read even if you don’t catch the performer. Here is a description of all of them with pictures of the ones we caught over the weekend, plus some of the decorations in the countries.

Canada – The Holiday Voyageurs perform on the Mill Stage singing songs and describing holiday traditions of different regions in Canada.

United Kingdom – Father Christmas tell us what the holiday season is like in the United Kingdom and explains the mistletoe custom. There’s also a short sing-a-long of Deck the Halls, a song that comes from Wales.

Morocco – Hear about holidays and festivals in Morocco, focusing on celebrating the harvests with dances and feasts.

Japan – Listen to the story of the Daruma doll and New Year’s celebrations in Japan.

American Adventure – Hear about the traditions of Hanukkah and Kwanzaa and the histories behind them. Santa and Mrs. Claus also meet and Voices of Liberty wear Dickens style clothes and sing songs of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. This year there is a gingerbread Capitol building and Washington Monument inside the rotunda.

The headliner of Epcot’s Holidays Around the World is the Candlelight Processional. A celebrity narrator reads scripture from the Christmas story surrounded by a choir and an amazing orchestra. Our narrator was Gary Sinise. It’s definitely a must-see. We like getting the dinner package at least once so we get seats without waiting in a long line. Other times we’ve stood in the back and still enjoyed it.

Of course, we have to end the day with Illuminations, which features a special holiday ending at this time of year with the countries wishing for Peace on Earth.

Spending the day at Epcot during the holiday season will definitely get you into the spirit.

AMC Sensory Friendly Films – Star Wars #TheForceAwakens

AMC Sensory Friendly Films Header

AMC Sensory Friendly Films – Star Wars #TheForceAwakens

AMC has partnered with the Autism Society to create movie showings for guests and family living with Autism or other special needs where ‘you can feel free to be you’ with their AMC Sensory Friendly Films Program.

During these showings the lights will be turned up while the sound will be turned down, so you can feel free to get up and move about the theater.

Due to the overwhelming response, AMC has expanded the Sensory Friendly Film Program to four showings per month.

  • The second and fourth Tuesday and Saturday.
  • Family-friendly movies will continue to show Saturdays, starting at 10am local time
  • We’ve added Tuesday showings at 7pm local time that may appeal to others on the autism spectrum.

The next film to be featured in this program is Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

And what is even more amazing, is that several AMC theaters in the Orlando area are participating in the Sensory Friendly Film Program!

You can find out more about the AMC Sensory Friendly Films and what theaters are participating near you on their official site.

I am so excited that this program exists, and you can share your posts and pics of the family fun with #AMCSensoryFriendly

Manilow insisted that the average ticket price remain low and that a greater range of these tickets be available.
