Orlando City to Host Reigning Eastern Conference Champions New England Revolution

Lions return to league play after MLS bye week

Orlando City SC (2-4-2, 8 points) will face the reigning Eastern Conference Champions – the New England Revolution (5-2-2, 17 points) – at the Orlando Citrus Bowl tonight, May 8. Kick-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.

The match will broadcast live nationally on UniMás and transmitted on Real Radio 104.1 FM in English and La Grande 1030 AM in Spanish locally.

“We have a huge game on Friday against a team that’s probably the most in-form side in the league,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath. “We know it’s going to be difficult, but the lads look fresh and we’re actively preparing for the game on Friday.”

Orlando City comes into the contest against New England after displaying one of the team’s most successful attacking performances against Brazilian Serie A side Ponte Preta at the Citrus Bowl last weekend.

After going down 1-0 early to the Brazilians, Orlando City scored two unanswered goals as Bryan Róchez and Sean St. Ledger scored their first goals in purple. After conceding an equalizer to Ponte Preta 10 minutes later, rookie forward Cyle Larin finished a penalty on the last play of the game in dramatic fashion. The penalty was Larin’s second goal this season.

The fixture against the Revolution marks Orlando’s first league match in 12 days, due to an MLS bye week last weekend.

One of the hottest teams in the league, the Revolution enters the game sitting in first place in the Eastern Conference. After losing their first two matches of the 2015 MLS campaign, New England has not suffered a defeat in its previous seven matches – including a convincing 4-0 win over Real Salt Lake and a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls most recently.

Highlighting New England’s roster is MLS Designated Player and U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) player Jermaine Jones, along with fellow USMNT teammates Lee Nguyen and Juan Agudelo.

Forward Charlie Davies currently leads the team in goals, scoring three goals in five starts.

Kennedy Space Center Hosts Fun Summer Day Camps

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

All New Camp Kennedy Space Center Celebrates ‘Engineering Our Future’

with Fun Day Camps for Inquisitive Kids

For a summer camp experience that educates and entertains children ages 8 to 16, Camp Kennedy Space Center day camp provides young people with an inspiring week of fun and enriching activities. The camp, which incorporates STEM learning and NASA-based curriculum, runs weekly beginning June 8 and ending August 7.

Camp Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is all new this year with educational activities to keep children engaged and learning during the summer. This year’s theme is “Engineering Our Future” and focuses on the engineering design process. Campers, or crewmembers, are invited to learn about the importance of engineering in the U.S. Space Program through hands-on challenges. The interactive program, led by Kennedy Space Center educators, encourages growth in science, technology, engineering and math, and strengthens teamwork and communication skills.

Throughout the five day program, campers perform a simulated space shuttle mission where they deploy a satellite or dock their payload to the International Space Station (ISS). They “train like an astronaut” in a Multi-Axis Trainer, similar to what Mercury astronauts used to condition themselves for disorienting situations that may occur in an emergency. Older grade levels have the opportunity to climb the micro-gravity wall, which simulates the effects zero-gravity has on movement and weight.

Camp KSC is designed with age appropriate content, placing campers into teams based on their grade levels. Each team works on their own week-long project surrounding the theme of engineering, such as designing a truss bridge strong enough to support an “eggstronaut,” building a small-scale multipurpose crew vehicle similar to NASA’s Orion capsule, maintaining a hydroponics garden and designing, building and launching rockets.

The various tracks offered during Camp KSC include:

Team Enterprise (2nd and 3rd graders)

Crewmembers in Team Enterprise explore engineering principles important in keeping an astronaut safe during launch and reentry. They will design and build a strong truss bridge to support the weight of their “eggstronaut” and build a spacecraft that can withstand extreme temperatures in order to keep “butternaut” alive during reentry. Others activities include training like an astronaut with fitness activities to test and improve reflexes and strength, creating impact craters and designing, building and testing gliders. The Enterprise track is offered weekly beginning June 8 and ending August 7.

Team Atlantis (4th and 5th graders)

Atlantis crewmembers participate in various team-oriented projects such as creating and maintaining a hydroponic garden to investigate the growth of different seeds and designing, building and testing self-propelled rovers. Crewmembers learn to build multi-purpose crew vehicles, similar to NASA’s Orion capsule, then test its safety features by launching the crew vehicle from a slingshot to the landing zone. Campers also build and launch chemical reaction rockets using baking soda and vinegar, and climb a micro-gravity wall. The Atlantis track is offered weekly beginning June 8 and ending August 7. Availability for this grade level goes quickly.

Team Endeavour (6th and 7th graders)

Endeavour crewmembers create their own rover capable of navigating a rough terrain similar to Mars. Before they explore the terrain, they must build a landing module and design a door that allows the rover to exit the spacecraft. Campers safely land the rover from a height of almost 33 feet and ensure their “eggstronaut” a secure exit to the ground. Campers also build and launch solid fuel rockets using a special kit that guides teams through important engineering steps. Other activities include preserving food using the method of dehydration and vacuum sealing, just like astronauts do for long duration missions to the ISS. The Endeavour track is offered weekly beginning June 8 and ending August 7.

Team Discovery (8th and 9th graders)

Campers on Team Discovery use a high-tech computer program called “RockSim” to design and customize their own 8- to 16-inch rocket. In smaller teams, campers purchase materials and build their rockets while staying within a designated budget. After building the solid fuel rockets, campers launch them to complete specific missions. Campers also perform a space shuttle mission, involving launching the shuttle then docking their payload to the International Space Station. The Discovery track is offered weekly beginning June 8 and ending Aug. 7.

Team Orion (10th and 11th graders)

Team Orion concentrates on the science of astrophysics with a focus on the sun. Campers construct telescopes by using 3D printer technology to fabricate parts. Campers then use the telescope for a study of the sun. Using the knowledge from their study, they design a solar-powered community using photovoltaic cells or solar cells, converting the energy of light into electricity. Campers also train like an astronaut on a Multi-Axis trainer and climb a microgravity wall. The Orion track is only offered during the weeks of June 22-26, July 13-17 and Aug. 3-7.

Robotics Track (6th through 9th graders)

The Robotics Track specializes in the science and engineering behind building and programming robots. Campers work in teams to design their robots using LEGO® Robotics materials. Once built, they navigate their robots through a challenge course and perform a series of tasks. Throughout the week, campers complete a space shuttle mission, train on a Multi-Axis trainer and climb a micro-gravity wall. The Robotics Track is only offered during the weeks of June 8-12, June 15-19, June 29-July 3, July 6-10, July 20-24 and July 27-31.

Every track includes a visit to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex where campers will see the real Space Shuttle AtlantisSM; take-off in a simulated shuttle launch on Shuttle Launch Experience®; meet a veteran NASA astronaut to hear how he or she accomplished their dream; and see the brand new 3D film “Journey To Space,” a stunning piece showcasing NASA’s bold plans for the future, including landing astronauts on Mars and capturing asteroids, while recognizing the Space Shuttle Program and its many accomplishments. Campers also receive a camp T-shirt, designed with the “Engineering Our Future” theme for 2015. At the end of the week, all campers attend a graduation ceremony at the Astronaut Encounter Theater in the Visitor Complex.

Camp Kennedy Space Center is located at the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame’s® educational facility, just south of U.S. 1 near the entrance to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Tuition is $295 per week plus tax, paid in advance. For more information or to book a reservation, visit www.kennedyspacecenter.com or call 866-870-8285.

Tips And Tricks: Packing For A #CoolestSummer Walt Disney World Vacation

Tips And Tricks: Packing For A Walt Disney World Vacation

The reservations have been made and the flights are booked for the #CoolestSummer at Walt Disney World. Advance Dining Reservations, you ask? I’ve got that covered as well. I am still contemplating our FastPass+  selections, but for now, my mind is focused on something else…packing!

I’m not talking about just any kind of packing. I’m talking about packing for a family of 5 for a duration of 15 nights. What’s more? Our nephew is joining us for part of it, and we are staying at two Walt Disney World Resorts before embarking on one very magical voyage on Disney Cruise Line.

Tips And Tricks: Packing For A Walt Disney World Vacation Tower of Terror Walt Disney World Mickey Balloons Disney's Hollywood Studios

We have done this before, so it’s not my first (Frontierland) Hoedown!  The task is still a daunting one. Lucky for us, we are Disney Vacation Club Members. That means one very important thing, a game changer actually. Can you say “washing machine?!” Don’t worry, this is not an ad for Disney Vacation Club. We just happen to be members and couldn’t live without the washing facilities in our room. But you may want to keep in mind that you can also find washing facilities at all of the Walt Disney World Resorts, and depending on the size of your travel party and your length of stay you may just find that little tidbit of information useful.

Disney Vacation Club DVC Washing Machine Laundry Packing

Ok, back to packing! I always begin by making a list. I can’t live without my lists.  As a matter of fact, I am KNOWN for my list making abilities. LOL! But seriously, never underestimate the importance of a good list.

Packing clothes is the easy part as far as I’m concerned. My first list has to do with all the extras. Things like sunscreen, contacts, glasses, toothpaste, hairbrushes, band -aids, hand sanitizer, make-up, medicines, etc. are the important things to remember. Then the list gets bigger from there!

Tips And Tricks: Packing For A Walt Disney World Vacation

Incidentally, I have already started that list even though our trip is still a few months away. This way, I can add things as I think of them. This eliminates the pressure of having to remember all this important things at the last minute. I keep the list readily available so that I can easily edit it at a moments notice.

Next comes the clothing items. Lets face it. Airline checked bag prices can be obscene! That is an import thing to note when you start planning how many clothing items you plan to bring along.

Which brings me back to utilizing the laundry facilities. For a 15 night trip, I pack around 6 outfits for each member of our family. It is ridiculously simple to throw in a load at the end of the night and then in to the dryer right when we wake up. If you plan to use community laundry facilities, you can utilize them when you are enjoying downtime at your resort.

Since the July/August heat in Orlando allows you the ability to practically fry an egg on the sidewalk, we only pack shorts, shirts, and light dresses. This also leaves more room in the luggage. How’s THAT for a space saving tip? Before you start planning and packing, you will want to make sure to check the carry-on restrictions for your particular airline.

Tips And Tricks: Packing For A Walt Disney World Vacation

If your plans include a Land/Sea vacation, like mine, there are some particulars you will definitely want to remember. Although your cruise is prepaid, be sure to remember to pack cash to tip your servers, room steward, etc.

Incidentally, on the first day of your cruise, you’ll want to pack a “day bag.” This is because your checked luggage may not be delivered to your stateroom until after1:30pm or even later. Some items you may want to include in your bag are medications, swimwear, sunscreen, sunglasses, contacts/eyewear, change of clothes (if needed), collared shirts for men, and personal electronics.

Tips And Tricks: Packing For A Walt Disney World Vacation Disney Cruise Line DCL Packing

Lastly, remember to bring along all the important items specific to a Disney vacation! As a matter of fact, I suggest you make another list! Tops on mine are autograph books, park tickets, rain ponchos, Magic Bands, pin trading lanyards, and EARS.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope my advice helps some of you as you plan your MAGICAL Disney vacation.

A Vision of Avengers: Age of Ultron

age_of_ultron

Welcome to a new age, a new rage, a child’s cry in the darkness – welcome to the Age of Ultron, the latest Avengers movie to come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  While on it’s surface the story of Ultron, which has been going on in comics since 1968, appears simple tale of Artificial Intelligence gone awry, in actuality it is so much more.  There are so many aspects to the story, many not even covered in the movie: life, death, rebirth, hate, rage, a child lashing out against it’s father, passion, desire, love, loss, oedipal complexes, jealousy.  But most of all it’s about a story about how life, despite being broken at times, can persevere.  These are the aspects that have brought to life this mad-crazed machine, Ultron, over the years.

There are several aspects of this movie that change the story, and some with very good reason.  Some I’m actually happy to see go because they are actually more violent and invasive than any supervillain rampaging through a city will ever be.  And others… well I now have concerns that we’ll never see two of my favorite heroes, Wonder Man and Adam Warlock, ever appear on screen.  Don’t worry, it isn’t as sad as it may sound, and it doesn’t mean they won’t exist, it just means their tales will have to be different. That sacrifice leads to a great adaptation of what I imagine was a difficult character to envision, The Vision.  One of the five most central characters to any Ultron story, his portrayal by Paul Bettany is remarkable, and it serves to properly portray the morality of the story.

You may just think you’re going to watch a group of ten, yes 10, superheroes on the screen battling a bad guy, saving the day.  And yes, there is much action you shall see because roughly 80% of this movie is action, and that is huge.  However, despite that you will want to see The Avengers fight and win, you will probably find yourself rooting a bit for the quirky, genocidal Ultron.  Voiced by James Spader who is well known for playing both crazy dudes and evil doers, a new aspect of Ultron comes, one not provided in comic books, humor.  And I don’t mean irony.  Ultron himself has a sense of humor, and it’s both amazing and terrifying at the same time.

What about “The Twins”? In comic books you might know them as Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, Pietro and Wanda Maximoff, the Mutant children of the master of magnetism himself, Magneto.  However, even when this movie closes its unclear if they’ll ever be known by their superhero names.  And we already know that due to business dealings they won’t ever be Mutants, and Magneto won’t be a part of their story.  Overall, I think their story as told in the movie is done well enough because it requires less foreknowledge, which is important for audiences who many only ever know these characters from the movies.

War Machine fans will be happy as there is a lot of Rhodey in this film, and his look is now closer to comic books than it has been before.  And fans will love that.  The biggest win though is Hawkeye, as fans of both the character and Jeremy Renner will get a lot of great character development as he is one of the driving forces in this story.  In other words, fans wanted more of both of these characters, and now they’ve got it.  Oh yeah, and a certain love story starts to take a lot of strides forward, even though it seems to go the same way as Captain America: The First Avenger at the end – that last statement is both vague and intentionally misleading so as to remain spoiler free.

My feelings about this movie are a little mixed.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s was utterly amazing to watch and made me shudder with joy at times.  But I’m about one of the biggest comic book geeks on the planet.  This story is all for folks like me.  It’s a lot more like reading a comic book than any other Marvel movie ever.  And I can therefore see where it won’t appeal to many who are not comic book fans.  The story is hard to follow, the motivations of the villain are not well defined without taking into account foreknowledge.  That won’t stop people from going to see this movie, it’s projected to cap $2 billion dollars when all is said and done, and it’s already made more than $250 million dollars before it’s official US opening.

There are a lot of questions left on the table with this movie.  The face of the Avengers changes a lot more than was expected even by a fan like myself.  But that’s in sticking with comic books, an Ultron story is always a game changer.  You don’t have to stay past the credits for this one folks as there is no post-credits scene, but don’t think that you’re being stiffed.  If you count carefully enough you’ll notice there are 4 equivalent scenes at the end of the movie.

Comic book fans, especially long time Avengers fans like myself will love this movie.  Marvel movie fans, will love this movie as well, though likely not as much as the first Avengers film.  It’s important to note there’s very little backstory here, it is expected that you know what’s gone before to watch this one – it is not self standing film.  It’d be like starting a 30 chapter book at chapter 16.  Go back watch at least some of the others, including the first Avengers if you haven’t.  Parents might have to explain some things to children, as there is a lot of graphic violence and scary events in this film.  This one will end up being the second biggest movie event of the year, and only because this year we get a new Star Wars film.

In addition to doing the web design and programming for the On the Go in MCO website, Todd Perlmutter is a host for the Disney Film Project Podcast.
