Disney’s Harambe Nights Review

Harambe NightsThis past weekend I was fortunate enough to attend the opening of Harambe Nights at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The party is running for the next nine Saturday nights through the summer. You can see our previous posts about Harambe Nights here and here. Our tickets to the event were complimentary, but all opinions are my own. Please note that this Saturday, June 14th is currently sold out completely, where all other nights are sold out for premium, but still have general tickets available.

We arrived at the park for Harambe Nights plenty ahead of time so we’d have time to wander around and not have to rush back to the Africa section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The party starts at 7pm with appetizers and drinks before the show, but we got there around 5:30pm since our tickets were at will call. When you arrive, you will receive a wristband with your designated section for the show. We were in the Zebra section, which ended up appearing to be the best of the options, so if you can, try to request the Zebra section.

The park was mostly cleared by the time we arrived since it was closing at 7pm, so we had no wait for security and only one person in front of us for our will call tickets. As we entered the park, we were given programs for the evening with the schedule of events for Harambe Nights along with the detailed menu and merchandise offerings. Cast Members told us we were welcome to enjoy the park, but to try to head towards Africa around 6:30pm. We decided to just head that way, taking our time with obligatory Tree of Life pictures along the way.

When we arrived in Africa, most of the seating area around Tusker House and the Dawa Bar was already taken. So, if you are going for this event only and aren’t spending time ahead of Harambe Nights doing attractions, get there early if you want to sit and relax with a drink, or get there closer to 7pm for the start. As 7pm rolled around, we entered the area to the left of Tusker House to head along the water back towards the brand new Harambe Theatre. Tables were setup to stand at while you enjoyed your appetizers and drinks. Several buffet tables were setup throughout the area with the appetizers and then multiple drink stations were spread out as well. Burudika played African music, face painters went around offering to paint guests’ faces, and cultural ambassadors were available to teach guests information about their home countries in Africa.

IMG_7939IMG_7940IMG_7945IMG_7946IMG_7947IMG_8146IMG_8147IMG_8151IMG_7941IMG_7942IMG_7943IMG_7944 IMG_8149IMG_7952IMG_7951

About half an hour later, we were advised to start queuing up in our respective animal sections to head into the Harambe Theatre for The Lion King: Concert in the Wild. The show is the heart of Harambe Nights, celebrating the 20th Anniversary of The Lion King film with a celebrity narrator, chorus, dancers, orchestra and film clips. Seating is done much like that during The Festival of the Lion King, so it is rather random where you will end up as far as in a low or high row, in the middle or on the end. We ended up exactly center in the second row back of our section and it was a fantastic view. If you can, try to time your seating accordingly to give yourself the best chance of a good view.

Our narrator for Harambe Nights was Viola Davis, star of movies like Doubt and The Help. The narrators, both celebrity and a cast narrator, serve to move forward the story in between clips, dancing and chorus singing, but also read lines as characters in addition to narrating. It would be interesting to see the different narrators and how they change up each show. Viola Davis was highly entertaining and did a great job. The group of about singers sat on stage off to the one side, while the orchestra was positioned on the opposite side of the stage. To me, the interpretive dancers really stole the show. Their dances were of a tribal nature, but seemed to combine elements of contemporary dance also to make very powerful performances. During the show, guests are able to snack on the Lion Chow, a trail mix of sorts created for the show, and guests were also permitted to bring in drinks. Premium seats are about 10-15 rows on the floor in front of the stage, and then the three sides facing the stage are used for bleacher seating general admission. A nice addition to the metal bleacher seats were pads that were taped down to add comfort since it is an almost hour long show. Another thing to make note of is that there is no intermission, so make sure you go to the bathroom before the show starts.

IMG_7962IMG_8153IMG_8161IMG_8091IMG_8088IMG_7972IMG_7985IMG_8021IMG_8022IMG_8024IMG_8055IMG_8061IMG_8062IMG_8063IMG_8064IMG_8067IMG_8072IMG_8076IMG_8086IMG_8087IMG_8089

After the amazing Concert in the Wild, Harambe Nights really kicked into full gear. When we exited the Harambe Theatre, we entered the village of Harambe and were greeted by tables and chairs setup throughout the area. Buffet tables were setup with different stations, DJ Khalifa played music, while dancers invited guests to join them dancing in front of the stage. Several of the floats from Mickey’s Jamming Jungle Parade were setup like the giraffe for guests to have their pictures taken with, and other stilt characters walked around. In addition to this, several Disney characters walked around to meet with guests. This was a bit different experience because there weren’t any queues, you just kind of had to follow the characters around to get their picture. Timon and Rafiki from The Lion King were there to see Harambe Nights. Pluto and Goofy also joined in the fun. My favorites though, were Mickey and Minnie in costumes I’d never seen before that appear to be unique to this event.

After we hit the first buffet table, we grabbed seats at a table partially under cover since rain was threatening. Since Harambe Nights is taking place in the evening throughout the summer when showers are often prevalent, it may be advisable for someone in your party to stake out a table under cover in the event it does start sprinkling like it did for us. We then took turns going to get plates at each of the buffet stations, as well as exploring the dance party, seeing the characters, and just enjoying all Harambe Nights had to offer.

IMG_8097IMG_8099IMG_8101IMG_8104IMG_8105IMG_8170IMG_8178IMG_8187IMG_8190IMG_8194IMG_8197IMG_8198IMG_8200IMG_8203IMG_8186IMG_8171IMG_8177IMG_8184IMG_8185

As far as the food and drink offerings, I was not disappointed. I started out the evening trying the jungle juice concoction that was pineapple and guava juice, which the bartender offered to add rum to, which ended up being a nice refreshing addition. My favorite of the appetizers were the beef kefta meatballs and the spicy durban chicken. I will say, if you are a fan of Jiko, Tusker House, Boma or Sanaa, you should really enjoy most if not all of the food available. Harambe Nights provides open bars for guests 21 and older from the time the party starts at 7pm up until the end of the party at 10:30pm. I noticed a selection of African beers, wine, rum, punch, soda and bottled water throughout the night. My favorite items from dinner were the samosas with mango chutney, bbq pork, butter chicken with basmati rice and legumes, and the bread service. They even have more tame things like macaroni and cheese, cheeseburger roll ups, and salad items for those less adventurous eaters. Because I tried a bite of literally every appetizer and entree, I did not have room for dessert. I also was avoiding the dessert table because there were items on it that I am allergic to, but was pleasantly surprised to see they also offered Mickey Ice Cream Bars.

Once we finished eating, we took our time heading out, stopping to take pictures with several of the photopass photographers. If you have Memory Maker, Harambe Nights is a great place to get some of those once in a lifetime, late night, empty park pictures that are so rare. We got a couple of really nice shots of us and were really glad we had Memory Maker to take advantage of for them. On the way out, we noticed a procession of more parade character animals and floats heading back towards Harambe from the Tree of Life where we were told by Cast Members to make sure we checked out on our way out. The Tree of Life had added blue twinkling lights to the usual lighting to add some extra sparkle to the night.

IMG_8206IMG_8207IMG_8208IMG_8209IMG_8215wd023wdw201415983898146wd021wdw201415983897334IMG_8228IMG_8230

Overall, I was very happy with Harambe Nights. It was great entertainment accompanied by fantastic food from some of my favorite restaurants. I went in thinking the price was a bit high for a hard ticket event to be honest, but after experiencing everything, it is a great value and well worth the price. I would stick to the general admission as a shorter person since the premium floor seats aren’t elevated and would have been difficult for me to see the stage since it is only slightly raised. Make sure you go prepared for inclement weather and also dress for comfort. You may be inclined to dress up since it is similar to dinner and a show, but you are still going to a theme park in summer. Keep in mind you will be doing a bit of walking since Harambe Nights takes place in the back of the park.

Are you planning on going to Harambe Nights? Did you make it to opening night? I hope Disney continues with this wonderful new addition to nighttime entertainment after hours at the theme parks.

Jedi Mickey’s Star Wars Dine

Jedi Mickey's Star Wars Dine

Jedi Mickey’s Star Wars Dine joins Star Wars Galactic Dine-In as the two new Star Wars Character meals available for booking exclusively during Star Wars Weekends.

Jedi Mickey’s Star Wars Dine is a buffet meal offered daily starting at 4:30 pm at Hollywood & Vine at Disney’s Hollywood Studios where you can meet your favorite Disney characters as their favorite Star Wars Character.

Here are some things to know before you go to Jedi Mickey’s Star Wars Dine:

  • The cost for the meal is $55.99 for adults (ages 10 and up) and $32.99 for children (ages 3-9).

  • Dinner includes the dinner buffet and a non-alcoholic beverage, but specialty beverages are available for an additional cost.

  • While there have been varying reports of discounts available, we were able to get a Disney Visa discount on our meal from our server.

  • If you are on a Disney Dining Plan, your meal will take two adult table service credits per person. This includes children, so make sure you confirm with your server what Dining Plan credits you will be required to redeem

  • Jedi Mickey’s Star Wars Dine is available to be booked as a Fantasmic Dinner Package with this meal for $59.99 for adults (ages 10 and up) and $36.99 for children(ages 3-9).

  • This dining experience can only be booked by calling (407) WDW-DINE.

Jedi Mickey’s Star Wars Dine is a more traditional ‘Character’ meal, and it was a lot of fun.

Jedi Mickey's Star Wars Dine

The check-in process takes a bit of time, because after you checking in for your meal you wait in a queue for your party to have their picture taken with Chip and Dale in their Ewok finest.

A digital download of this picture with Chip and Dale is included with your meal on a special commemorative Photopass+ card that you can only get from dining at this location.

Jedi Mickey's Star Wars Dine

Once you have taken your picture, you then have to wait for your table. We found the wait to be seated to be longer than usual, but I believe that this was because the characters were spending longer periods of time with each table taking photos and signing autographs.

When you are seated, each member in your party gets a paper lightsaber for you to use during the meal to show which side you represent.

Jedi Mickey's Star Wars Dine

We decided that we would use our paper lightsaber a little differently, and instead of having a lightsaber battle we had the characters sign them!

Jedi Mickey's Star Wars Dine

The Jedi Mickey’s Star Wars Dine buffet was definitely stepped up from the normal Hollywood & Vine offerings! The food was delicious, and even though we had a very late reservation it was still well stocked and fresh.

Jedi Mickey's Star Wars Dine

We also really enjoyed the fun Star Wars Names that each of the dishes were given.

Jedi Mickey's Star Wars Dine

Also, the dessert bar was AWESOME! Again, all of the deserts had a Star Wars touch and I really appreciated that there were mini versions of the Star Wars Weekends cupcakes available on the bar. It was my favorite part!

The highlight of the Jedi Mickey’s Star Wars Dine was definitely the characters, because they took their time and had great interaction opportunities!

Jedi Mickey's Star Wars Dine

In addition to Chip and Dale as Ewoks, you had the opportunity to meet Stormtrooper Donald, Darth Goofy, Minnie Princess Leia, and Jedi Mickey himself.

Jedi Mickey's Star Wars Dine

Jedi Mickey's Star Wars Dine

Jedi Mickey's Star Wars Dine

We really enjoyed the Jedi Mickey’s Star Wars Dine, and if it returns for next year’s Star Wars Weekends we would definitely do it again!

Lunching at The Wave…of American Flavors

One of my favorite “under the radar” restaurants at Walt Disney World is The Wave…of American Flavors (The Wave for short) at the Contemporary Resort.

Comtemporary

The menu here features American cuisine and many of the ingredients are sourced locally. I’ve always felt that the food I’ve eaten here has been fresh and prepared so that these fresh ingredients, especially produce, can shine.

The restaurant is located in the back corner of the lobby, just past the check-in desks. The entrance is definitely one of the coolest on property!

Entrance

Various elements of the décor also bring out the “wave” theme. It also features close up photographs of produce, like an ear of corn.

Picture from Disney. Interior.

I’ve eaten at the Wave several times now of the past few years, at least once for every meal. Recently, it’s become a tradition for my mom and I to eat Easter brunch there after church service. They always have a fantastic breakfast buffet there (sweet potato pancakes anyone??), but for Easter they add a few extras, like carving and omelet stations.

Today though, I’m going to focus on lunch at the Wave. I’ve eaten lunch there a couple of times now. I love that you can usually always get in without a reservation there and that is especially true at lunch. It’s very quiet and I think could be a great break from a busy (and hot) theme park day. Plus, it’s an easy walk from the Magic Kingdom!

Now onto the food…I will warm you that I’m not the greatest when it comes to food reviews. They usually consist of varying degrees of yumminess! But I’ll try to be a bit more descriptive this time!

Most of the time, I like to keep it light at lunch with a salad and maybe an appetizer. My first lunch there, I fell in love with the Wave’s version of the Cobb salad.

From the menu: MacGregor Farms Greens, Naturally Raised Eggs, Bacon, Florida Avocados, Chile-Lime Vinaigrette, and Midnight Moon Cheese
From the menu: MacGregor Farms Greens, Naturally Raised Eggs, Bacon, Florida Avocados, Chile-Lime Vinaigrette, and Midnight Moon Cheese

Most Disney fans know of Brown Derby’s version, which is great, but I give the Wave’s a bit of an edge because of the bigger pieces of the ingredients. With the Brown Derby’s I feel like it all sort of mushes together. I’m also a bit obsessed with the bacon on this salad. It’s thick-cut and has a bit of sweetness to it. It goes great with the tangy vinaigrette. I know there are people who aren’t fans of the traditional bleu cheese found on most Cobb salads. You will be happy to hear that the cheese on this version is much more mild and has a parmesan-like texture.

You can choose to add chicken or steak to the salad to make it more of an entrée. Instead, I decided to go with the soup of the day, which was a Zellwood corn and chicken chowder. The restaurant happened to be a bit chilly that afternoon so sop actually sounded fantastic. And it was! Zellwood corn is known for being sweet. The chicken was shredded and there was some spice with red peppers in the base. This was also paired with a jalapeño corn bread muffin, which also added a bit of heat, but nothing overwhelming. Our server made sure to warn us.

Season Soup - corn chowder
Season Soup – corn chowder

I will definitely be back to The Wave…for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Lunch is definitely a treat and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a break from the parks for an hour or two. The only complaint I have is I’ve had some inconsistent service there. The servers have always been very nice, it’s just some have been more on top of everything than others.

Have you been to The Wave? What would you recommend for my next visit?

The Skyscraper at SKYPLEX announcement by David and Joshua Wallack, the owners of Mango’s Tropical Café Orlando and Mango’s Tropical Café South Beach, is the latest in the revitalization of I Drive in Orlando.

The Skyscraper, the world’s tallest roller coaster, and the unique 495,000 square feet SKYPLEX indoor entertainment complex will break ground in 2015 with an expected opening date of 2016, and will be built on 12 acres with 300 front feet at International Drive and Sand Lake Road near the Orlando Eye 425-foot ferris wheel.

A look at the current

The Skyscraper at SKYPLEX location.

The Skyscraper at SKYPLEX will bring a mix of retail, restaurant, and attraction space that along with Mango’s Orlando will create an exciting nighttime vibe on I Drive.

“Next to our theme parks, International Drive is one of the most recognized icons of Orlando,” said Visit Orlando president and CEO George Aguel.  “It’s exciting for our tourism community to see this type of investment being made to continuously raise the bar on the dining and entertainment experiences we offer across our destination.”

The Skyscraper at SKYPLEX is 570 feet tall and will feature the first Polercoaster built. This mega-thrill ride is a vertical roller coaster created with coaster-length tracks featuring “all the other thrilling mayhem” of a great coaster experience, but “in a very small footprint,” according to Michael Kitchen, President of US Thrill Rides, the Orlando based company that created the ride.

Bill Kitchen, Founder of US Thrill Rides and creator of the Polercoaster said “Not only will the ‘Skyscraper’ coaster be the world’s tallest, we believe it will be the most thrilling. There will be incredible heart-pounding inside and outside loops, dives, spirals and inversions like the world has never seen.”

The SKYPLEX observation deck at the tip of the tallest structure in Central Florida will offer views 535 feet from the ground.  To get there, visitors will ride in the region’s tallest glass elevators.

Skyscraper at SKYPLEX

“We’re extremely excited about creating a record-breaking, must-try attraction on International Drive,” said Joshua Wallack, Mango’s Tropical Café chief operating officer, who also will open a Mango’s Orlando next year across International Drive from SKYPLEX.  “Nowhere in the world will you have two iconic structures like The Skyscraper and the Orlando Eye.  This will be an incredible opportunity for International Drive.”

Wallack and his father David are partners in the mixed-use development that includes opportunities for additional attractions, entertainment, interactive venues, restaurants and retail to include a two-story prime retail space on International Drive.  The SKYPLEX indoor entertainment complex including the observatory and restaurant and lounge at the top of the Skyscraper was designed by global architectural firm HHCP, based in Orlando, and will be constructed by Euforria, a construction management division of Winter Park Construction, based in Winter Park, Fla.

“Imagine a night of incredible dining, lounging and dancing atop a glass elevator ride 55 stories into the air,” said David Wallack.  “It’s a true meeting of engineering, technology and art that is making this dream happen for us.  We plan to bring Ocean Drive to I-Drive with a new dining and nightlife district that locals and Orlando visitors won’t want to miss.”

We are excited about all that The Skyscraper at SKYPLEX will be bringing to Orlando, and we’ll be updating you as the complex is built.

Marketplace Co Op Opens At The Downtown Disney Marketplace

Marketplace Co Op

The Marketplace Co Op opened today at the Downtown Disney Marketplace, and we were fortunate enough to get an early peek at this new and exciting area!

The Marketplace Co Op, in the former Team Mickey location, houses six specialty merchandise locations that will be updated every quarter so your shopping experience will be able to change with the season to serve as a showcase for new items and lines of products.

The interior of the Marketplace Co Op is really sparse and industrial looking so that the individual spaces can really take on the lifestyle and look of its content.

Marketplace Co Op

I especially loved the chandelier with its mixture of antiques and modern sensibility.

Marketplace Co Op

I also like how the Marketplace Co Op is still open to TrenD and Downtown Disney Marketplace Guest Relations to give the space an even more unified feel!

Now it is time to get to the good part…

The six new specialty merchandise locations of the Marketplace Co Op!!!

D-Tech on Demand: A place to personalize and customize your own electronic accessories

Marketplace Co Op

Marketplace Co Op

D-Tech on Demand has a wide variety of electronics, headphones, speakers, phone cases, and electronic accessories, but the gem of the store is the D-Tech On Demand Cases!

Marketplace Co Op

Marketplace Co Op

In the center of the store is a bay of iPads where you can choose the perfect case for YOU and even personalize it with your name! Currently the D-Tech On Demand Cases are only available for the iPhone 4/4S/5/5S and the Samsung Galaxy S3 & S4. We were told that new phones will be added soon!

Marketplace Co Op

The D-Tech On Demand customized cell phone cases are $36.95 and the Personalized D-Tech On Demand cell phone cases are $44.95.

Marketplace Co Op

Also available are Disney Vacation Club Resort specific phone cases with the DVC logo. DVC member do receive a 10% discount on these customized cell phone cases. We were given conflicting information about if these are exclusive to DVC members, so we will update you with information as we find out!

The Trophy Room: Vintage inspired, lifestyle sports apparel, and collectibles.

Marketplace Co Op

While this area of the Marketplace Co Op is definitely the least ‘Disney’ of the areas I have to say that it is one of my absolute favorites!

Marketplace Co Op World Cup

The area has an old world gentleman’s sporting club feel, and is filled with vintage apparel that is absolutely reasonably priced!

Marketplace Co Op

I was kind of bummed that they didn’t have an runDisney Merchandise here, since Team Mickey was the place to get those items!

However, my biggest complaint about The Trophy Room is that there was no love for my Alma Mater Virginia Tech…Go Hokies!!!

Beautifully Disney: A beauty destination for woman featuring make-up, fragrance, and beauty accessories.

Marketplace Co Op Beautifully Disney

The Beautifully Disney area at the Marketplace Co Op is definitely the smallest area of the six, but it packs quite a punch with all that they have to offer!

Marketplace Co Op Aulani

Inside this area you will find the entire Beautifully Disney line, spa items that are exclusive to Aulani, H2O products, and fragrances galore.

Marketplace Co Op Pop of Minnie

There are also certified makeup artists that are happy to give you a complimentary mini-makeover using the Beautifully Disney products! Talk about a great break from the parks!

Marketplace Co Op Make Over Area

Marketplace Co Op Make over

Right now, they have an extremely limited promotion where for every $60 you spend you can receive a shirt with the Beautifully Disney logo. There are only 300 of these shirts, so they will go quickly.

Marketplace Co Op Beautifully Disney Shirt

One little tid bit of fun! While I was getting my mini-makeover this morning we got a peek at the new Beautifully Disney Makeup Mirror coming to the stores in December. The details are amazing and it’s a great size for home and travel. I have a feeling that I am going to be buying a lot of these as gifts for the holidays!

Marketplace Co Op Mirror

Centerpiece: Home product for Guests that want a splash of Disney in their room furnishings, textiles, and everyday ware.

Marketplace Co Op Centerpiece

Centerpiece at the Marketplace Co Op is going to cause a lot of issues in my house, because there wasn’t one thing that I didn’t want to buy!!!!

Marketplace Co Op Orange Bird

You had me rom the 20,000 Leagues Mug, the Orange Bird wall of amazingness, the Mr. Toad small tray, and the Tiki Room Cloth Napkins!

Marketplace Co Op 20,000 Leagues Mug

I’m just going to give you pictures so we can mourn the loss of our money together!!!

Marketplace Co Op Tiki Room Napkins

Marketplace Co Op Tiki

Marketplace Co Op Chalk

Marketplace Co Op Mr Toad

Zoey and Pickles: A girls’ destination containing the latest trends and glamour for the up and coming fashionista.

Marketplace Co Op Zoey and Pickles

So my Zoe will not know that Zoey and Pickles exists, because she will want everything in this store!!!

Marketplace Co Op Pascal Shirt

Full of great clothes, accessories, and shoes in an assortment of styles Zoey and Pickles is sure to have something that your girl can’t live without.

Marketplace Co Op Shoes

The displays are fun and colorful, and even the stools are just the right size for them to sit and try on shoes!

This is a much needed area for girls who have maybe outgrown the Princesses, but are still a little young to venture next door to TrenD!

Cherry Tree Lane: Accessories for the sophisticated woman with a passion for scarves, shoes, bags and jewelry.

Marketplace Co Op Cherry Tree Lane

Cherry Tree Lane…you are also going to get me in a lot of trouble!!!

Marketplace Co Op Mary Poppins

The design of Cherry Tree Lane has a lot of nods to Mary Poppins and is home to a great line of merchandise inspired by the movie

Marketplace Co Op Vera Bradley

This is also going to be where you will find new Disney Dooney and Bourke and Disney Vera Bradley purses launching in the future.

Full of fun accessories, purses to die for, and a great atmosphere Cherry Tree Lane is awesome!

A lot of the merchandise featured at the Marketplace Co Op is currently available on DisneyShopping.com, however we are hearing that the pieces are selling out quickly, so my best piece of advice is to call Walt Disney World Merchandise Guest Services at 877-560-6477 (toll Free) with a detailed description of what you are looking for if you can’t wait for your ‘Must Have’ items!

Marketplace Co Op Shopping Bag

I really love the idea of the Marketplace Co Op, because it is a way to get out of the hustle and bustle that can be shopping at Walt Disney World for more of a boutique and unique shopping experience. I also can’t wait to see how these spaces evolve as Disney Springs is built!!!

We posted more photos on our Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook accounts if you want even more great pics from this morning at the Marketplace Co Op!

A Look at Bay Lake Tower At Disney’s Contemporary Resort With Kelly

Bay Lake Tower
Photo: Disney

This week Kelly takes us along as she looks at Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort in the Walt Disney World Resort.

When I was a child I was mystified by Disney’s Contemporary Resort. All I kept thinking was that a building that had a monorail going through it seemed to be way too technologically advanced to be real, and that I could spend all day riding the monorail through the resort.

Bay Lake Tower

When I became a Disney Vacation Club member they were in the process of building Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, and I couldn’t wait to see the expansion on the Contemporary.

Bay Lake Tower
View of Bay Lake from Bay Lake Tower
Photo: Betsy Bates

I was able to do a walkthrough of a mock room at Saratoga Springs, and I loved the design aesthetic that had been chosen for this resort as soon as I walked through the door. It made me think of the exit ramp at Space Mountain and what I pictured the advertised resorts on “Mars” or “Saturn” may look like. While it was certainly close to what I envisioned, it ended up being so much more.

Bay Lake Tower Room

Once the opening date was set I booked a room and since that first visit, I have been back a few times. While Bay Lake Tower is a fairly small Disney Vacation Club Property with just over 400 rooms, the building is huge and filled with beautiful and fun Disney touches and artwork.

I find that I don’t stay at Bay Lake Tower very often, because I tend to stay away from the Magic Kingdom resort area and I prefer more on-site amenities in my resort.

Bay Lake Tower
Bay Lake Tower Pool Area from the Resort.
Photo: Betsy Bates

I recommend this resort for people who are going to spend the majority of their time at the Magic Kingdom (or Epcot as it is accessible by monorail through the TTC). This resort is also fantastic for those who can’t live without Wishes, the nighttime firework display at the Magic Kingdom. The soundtrack for the show plays in all Bay Lake Tower resort rooms as well as up on the top floor in the Top Of The World Lounge. It’s a fantastic way to end those magical days.

My three tips for enjoying Bay Lake Tower:

Bay Lake Tower
Photo: Betsy Bates
Bay Lake Tower
Photo: Betsy Bates

Tip 1: Have an early dinner at the Wave restaurant in the Contemporary Resort before heading to Top Of The World for appetizers and drinks afterwards. My recommendations: Bay Lake Sunset (vanilla vodka, coconut rum, pineapple juice, and grenadine) with an order of soft pretzels with dips to share as you watch the fireworks from the lounge

Bay Lake Tower
Photo: Betsy Bates

Tip 2: When booking, request a room near the causeway. As there are limited amenities in Bay Lake Tower itself, it’s nice to be able to walk quickly over to the Contemporary for quick snacks and sundries

Tip 3: Try to plan an evening while staying here to just relax in the room. Community Hall has board games you can rent for free as a dvc member, so grab a game and relax and enjoy the ambiance of your room.

Have you stayed at Bay Lake Tower? What are some of your favorite tips for staying at this Disney Vacation Club Resort?

Million Dollar Arm: A Baseball Fan’s View

million dollar armThe crack of the bat, the sweet aroma of freshly mowed grass, the crisp baselines. These are just a few of the things that make me absolutely love our nation’s pastime, baseball. When I heard Disney was going to be releasing another baseball movie, Million Dollar Arm, but this one with Jon Hamm, I was more than a little excited. The combination of my favorite sport and one of my favorites actors set my sights on this May release. From the first time I saw the previews, I was hooked.

For those who aren’t familiar with the story, Million Dollar Arm tells the story of sports agent J.B. Bernstein and his quest to find a baseball player from the untapped market in India. With the help of an investor to back the contest, J.B. (played by Jon Hamm) travels to India to ideally find cricket players to become the next pitchers in Major League Baseball. The movie is one that explores the idea of family, what is most important in life, and do the ends justify the means. While that may sound rather heavy for a Disney film about baseball, Million Dollar Arm addresses them all in a humorous, but poignant manner.

I like the way in which J.B. bonds with the two boys he brings over from India, Rinku and Dinesh, and their translator and wannabe coach, Amit. After a few mishaps due to cultural differences, J.B. ends up taking them in. The game of baseball is the vehicle through which the story develops of the boys and their relationship with J.B. As Dinesh and Rinku have never played baseball before, don’t speak English when they arrive in America, and come from a very different lifestyle in India, you can imagine that it is not an easy journey for these young men.

Million Dollar Arm is a welcome addition to the canon of baseball films in my collection. I like the correlations to other sports related movies like Jerry Maguire, Rudy, Hoosiers, Remember the Titans and The Rookie. It isn’t so much about the destination with this movie, as most know, or at least can predict what happens, but it is more about the journey. Even my mom, who isn’t the biggest baseball fan loved this film. It is heartfelt, funny, and has a good amount of baseball references. In the end, the journey is as much J.B.’s as it is that of the boys he brought to this country. Million Dollar Arm hits all the right notes for an enjoyable family film for the baseball fan.

Have you seen Million Dollar Arm yet? Where does it fit in your ranking of baseball films? This one falls in the upper half for me. It isn’t quite up there with The Pride of the Yankees, Bull Durham, The Sandlot, Field of Dreams or A League of Their Own. I like it much better than the already likable The Rookie, one of Disney’s other forays into the baseball world. Check out this film if you’re a fan of baseball, Jon Hamm or Bollywood.
