Epcot Food and Wine Festival 2012 – Snack And Sip On This, Skip That

Epcot Food and Wine Festival 2012 – Snack And Sip On This, Skip That

Epcot Food and Wine Festival

Every year at Food and Wine festival at Epcot there are a few booths that are either the same as previous years or things that are always available in the parks. While these items are yummy, they can be skipped if you are a on a time crunch while sipping and strolling around the park. I figured I would let you in on a few of these items!

Canada:

Cheddar Cheese Soup: I know people go BANANAS for this soup and it is a top seller but this is both something you can get at Food and Wine, to go service AND table service at Le Cellier any time of the year. The line is ALWAYS super long and usually a bit of a wait.

My Advice: Skip This

Ice Wine: I am a HUGE FAN of Ice Wine. I had it for the first time many years ago at Food and Wine Festival. I make this a priority stop every year! The grapes for Ice Wine are only picked once a year, within a few hours from a special harvest of frozen to the vine grapes! It is a sweet dessert wine that is always such a treat no matter when you drink it!!!

My Advice: Sip on This

Greece:

Assorted Dannon Oikos Greek Yogurt Cups: I feel silly putting this on the list but I have to let you know! Seriously, head to Publix and pick your own flavors and enjoy them for breakfast! I am a huge Greek Yogurt fan but, who needs to wait in line and bay 3.00 for yogurt… lol. I would sing a different song if they had fresh made Greek Yogurt however.

My Advice: Skip This

Italy

Ravioli di Formaggio All’emiliana (Baked Cheese Ravioli) : This is always a top seller and there is always a long line to sample this. After Food and Wine 2 years ago, Epcot set up an Italy booth just on the outside of the country where you could purchase this dish year round since it was such a popular and huge hit. This portion for Food and Wine is a bit smaller then the regular season portion so it isn’t really worth the bang for your buck!

My Advice: Skip This

Morocco

Kefta Pocket: This is an item that they do sell in Tangerine Cafe but this is a smaller portion at a much smaller price without the sides. The Seasoned beef is always flavorful and it is put in a Pita Pocket! One of my favorite choices for lunch so this is the perfect size if you want to try something new!

My Advice: Snack on This

Poland

Kielbasa & Potato Pirogi with Caramelized Onions: My husband and I are HUGE Pirogi fans.. we eat them at least twice a month. I am convinced that the Pirogi that they serve are the same ones we buy at Walmart. They tend to be over boiled and very floppy, served with a small slice of boiled kielbasa, a mickey head squirt of sour cream and a few floppy onions on top. Save your self the time, make them at home!

My Advice: Skip This

Singapore

Singapore Sling: This is a concoction of Gin, Fresh Pineapple Juice, Cherry Juice and Soda Water. If you are ready for a strong and sweet beverage then grab this! Our recommendation is to ask for a cup of ice and pour your beverage over the ice to cut down on the strength.

My Advice: Sip On This

These are just some of my notes. Please feel free to sip and snack and skip what you want. I am lucky enough to get to go to Food and Wine multiple times each year so I can be a bit picky when ti comes to what I want to spend my money on each year. Please Keep on the look out for some of our Favorites and some of our Not so Favorites in the coming weeks! Make sure you follow us around on Twitter to see what new Favorites we may have!!!

Beth went to the preview of the Epcot Food and Wine Festival yesterday, and here are some of the pictures that she tweeted!

And now here are some Quick Bites to keep in mind as you are going around the Epcot Food and Wine Festival! Now these Quick Bites are extremely honest, and we have also included links to our friends over at The Disney Food Blog since they have AMAZING coverage of the Epcot Food and Wine Festival for a different perspective and beautiful pictures!

Argentina

* Beef Empanada – I tried this last year, but didn’t like it.  It was the only thing that I actually threw out.
* Grilled Beef Skewer with Chimichurri Sauce and Boniato Purée – I loved this.  It was one of my favorite   things at the festival.

Australia

* Shrimp on the Barbie with Pepper Berry Citrus Glaze – This is always good, but I’m not sure it is worth the cost.  I would love to try to make it at home.
*Grilled Lamb Chop with Mint Pesto and Potato Crunchies – Yum!  I don’t recall the potato crunchies in previous years, but I can’t wait to try them.

Belgium

* Steamed Mussels in Hoegaarden Beer Broth and Baguette – This is a festival favorite.  I’ve always enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
* Belgian Waffle with Berry Compote and Whipped Cream – So good! People wait in the long lines for this dish alone!
* Guylian Belgian Chocolate Seashell Truffles – Last year this was only 2 truffles per package.  It wasn’t an expensive item and the prices were probably on par with high-end chocolate like Godiva, but I don’t think I’d spend my money on it.
* Hoegaarden – My personal favorite beer in Belgium (though not my favorite of all Belgian beers).
* Leffe Brune – This is a new one beer this year.
* Godiva Chocolate Liqueur Iced Coffee – Always delicious, but a very small serving.

Brewer’s Collection

* Altenmünster Oktoberfest – This is also available in the Germany marketplace and in the WS pavillion.
* Altenmünster Dunkel – This beer was so popular last year that it sold out with more than 2 weeks left in the festival.

Canada
* Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup – This is always a top seller, but I personally don’t care for it.
* Chicken Chipotle Sausage with Sweet Corn Polenta and “Minus 8″ Onion Jam – I loved this last year.  Officially, it doesn’t have a pairing, but I would recommend Niege (apple ice wine) with it.

** Neige Bubble – This actually won’t be at the festival because of a tornado at the orchard.**

Caribbean Islands

* Ropa Vieja with Cilantro Rice – A good dish to try.  I actually preferred it to the one served at Columbia Restaurant in Celebration

Cheese

* Cheese Fondue with Sourdough Bread – I love cheese, but I didn’t really like this one last year.
* Trio of Artisan Cheeses: Beecher’s Flagship Reserve Cheddar, La Bonne Vie Goat Brie and Rogue River Creamery Echo Mountain Blue Cheese – These are new cheeses in this selection this year.

*Sterling Vintner’s Collection Meritage – this was only okay.  I don’t think I’d spend the money on it.

Desserts & Champagne
* Moët & Chandon Ice Impérial – served on the rocks

Florida

* Florida Orange Grove Hurricane Class 5, Florida White Sangria – If you like sweeter wines, this is a must try!

France

*  Créme Brûlée au Chocolat au Lait – I always have to have this once!

Germany

* Apple Strudel with Karamel-Vanilla Sauce – this was delicious.  Ask for extra caramel!

* Selbach-Oster Estate Spätlese
* JH Selbach Riesling QbA Red Label – this was good, but I prefer the spatlese

Greece

* Griddled Greek Cheese with Pistachios and Honey – delicious!  I can’t wait to have it again!

Hawaii

* Kalua Pork Slider with Sweet and Sour Dole Pineapple Chutney and Spicy Mayonnaise – This was delicious! It is a top seller!

Hops & Barley

* Linda Bean’s® Perfect Maine Lobster Roll® – being a native New Englander, I was skeptical about this dish, but it turns about be delicious.  Save your snack credits for this!
* Pumpkin Mousse with Craisins and Orange Sauce – the spices on this were delicious.  Just like pumpkin pudding.

* Angry Orchard Cider – OMG. This is delicious. I must have more of it!

Ireland

* Lobster and Seafood Fisherman’s Pie
* Kerrygold® Cheese Selection: Aged-Irish Cheddar, Dubliner and Cashel Blue with Apple Chutney and Brown Bread
* Warm Chocolate Lava Cake with Bailey’s Ganache

* All three foods are delicious. I think the cheese plate is one of the best values of the festival.

* Bunratty Potcheene Chilled Irish Coffee – new this year, and I am excited to try it with the lava cake.

Italy

* Ravioli di Formaggio All’emiliana (Baked Cheese Ravioli, Creamy Beef Bolognese, Parmesan, Mozzarella) – popular, but I don’t really like it.
* Cannoli al Cioccolato (Chocolate-Covered Cannoli filled with Ricotta, Chocolate, Candied Fruit) – drooling just thinking about this!

Mexico

* Crispy Shrimp Taco with Chipotle Lime Mayo and Cabbage Served on a Flour Tortilla – I loved this last year!

Morocco

* Kefta Pocket (Ground Seasoned Beef in a Pita Pocket) – Good and a great size if you would like to try it without paying full price in Tangerine Cafe.

New Zealand

* Seared Sea Scallop with Kumara Red Curry Puree and Apple Radish Salad – Delicious!  A good sized scallop for the price.

* Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc – This wine really didn’t stick out to me. You may want to skip it…

Poland,
* Kielbasa & Potato Pierogie with Caramelized Onions and Sour Cream – meh.  Go buy Mrs. T’s and Hillshire Farms and make it at home.

Scandinavia

* Rice Pudding with Driscoll’s® Only The Finest Berries™ – good, but I prefer the rice cream inside Kringla Bakery

Singapore

* Beef Rendang with Jasmine Rice – delicious and spicy

* Singapore Sling – get a cup of ice from a counter service location before you order this.  It is very strong!  Pour it over the ice.

South Africa

* Seared Filet of Beef with Smashed Sweet Potatoes and Braai Sauce – this was delicious! I may try it without the sauce next time.

South Korea
* Bohae Black Raspberry Wine-Bokbunjajoo – if this is the same wine as last year, I’d say skip it.  It tasted like cough medicine.

Terra

** Note that the wines served in Terra are not vegan**

* Paul Dolan Pinot Nior – This is delicious!

Sesame Street Live “Elmo Makes Music” Coming To The Bob Carr!

Sesame Street Live “Elmo Makes Music” Coming To The Bob Carr! And your chance to win a Family 4 Pack of Tickets!

Music has always played a large role in our home and in Zoe’s development over the years. We always have some sort of music playing in our house whether its singing the ABCs, watching her favorite Sesame Street friends singing about numbers and feelings, or even having songs we would love to dance around the house to instead of ‘working’.  And you always hear the statistics about how children who participate in music and the arts tend to be more well-rounded and have higher GPAs, so I thought fostering a love of music early in her life was, and still is, important.

And when I heard that Sesame Street Live “Elmo Makes Music” was coming to the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre in Orlando on Tuesday, October 9th, and Wednesday, October 10th, I knew that this would be a great opportunity to catch a wonderful production and reinforce her love of music.

Sesame Street Live Coming to the Bob Carr October 9 & 10
Sesame Street Live Coming to the Bob Carr October 9 & 10

Sesame Street Live is a larger-than-life, musical touring stage production featuring Big Bird, Elmo, Cookie Monster, Bert and Ernie…and more.  Each performance is 90 minutes of singing, dancing and audience participation, including a 15-minute intermission.  The perfect length for very young children, and are a great introduction to watching the arts!

Elmo, The Count, Cookie Monster, Big Bird, Bert & Ernie and all their funny and furry friends are taking to the stage to share the magical world of music with children. When Jenny, the new Sesame Street music teacher, moves into town, her instruments get lost. Jenny’s new Sesame Street friends quickly come to her rescue, and they all discover “instruments” that they never knew existed…rubber duckies, trash can lids and even their own laps! The characters teach children, and themselves, that everyone has the ability to make beautiful music, whether they realize it or not. Don’t miss this opportunity to count along with The Count, visit Elmo’s World and do the Crumb-A-Rumba with Rosita and Cookie Monster at Sesame Street Live “Elmo Makes Music.”

TrenD Report – September 26, 2012

TrenD Report – September 26, 2012

So let’s call a spade a spade…I have been totally slacking on my TrenD Reports, but it’s time to fix that and get back to window shopping! It has been awhile, so let’s get this TrenD Report started!!!

It is a beautiful day. and I decided to head down to the Downtown Disney Marketplace in Evie the Equinox that @ChevyFlorida has provided me with for the week!

When I arrived at the Downtown Disney Marketplace, I was excited to see that it had some special decorations for the Fall up all over the place! I love how they decorate this area for the fall. Sure it’s over 80 outside, but I will take any “Fall” I can get down here in Orlando!

After walking around for a bit, it was time to head into TrenD!

There are a lot of great new Disney pieces in here, which is a welcome change from all the outside clothing lines that have filled the store lately! I found all sorts of great bags, accessories, shirts, and scarves!

I even spied some great new mugs and cup lining the shelves of TrenD.

And since it is so close to Halloween, I thought it might be fun to focus on all the fun Villians merchandise that they have in TrenD now. I am so glad to find that there is more Villian merchandise for my TrenD Report this month, and even happier to know that there is more Villain’s merchandise coming our way soon!

Also, I found that the Nightmare Before Christmas Harveys bags have finally made their way over to make the TrenD report!

I found that they were out of the Maleficent Villain’s Hobo, so I decided to head over to World of Disney where I found it and a few more new pieces to share with you on the TrenD Report.

I hope that you enjoyed this look at some fun new merchandise!

What other shopping or collections would you like to see us feature here on the blog?

Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance Review

Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance Review

Hello Gamers!

Disney Interactive Studios and Square Enix have released another game in their highly successful Kingdom Hearts series. This one is for the Nintendo 3DS and titled “Dream Drop Distance”. The title is a play on the 3D aspect of the game as well as a “Dream Drop” component that was added to this installment not in previous ones.

kingdom hearts dream drop distance review
Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance – Available for the Nintendo 3DS

First off, allow me to tell you a bit about myself. I always find it is important to know something about a reviewer while reading a review so that you know where they are coming from. I know that when I know a little bit about a reviewer, it helps me make a more informed decision about whether or not I agree or disagree with their opinions.

have loved video games since I was a child. I think I’ve went through every system from Colecovision and intellivision (showing my age) to the current PS3 etc. I have already put a pre-order in for the upcoming new Nintendo Wii U. Now, at 40 years of age, I still love video games, but it takes a lot more to keep me interested and engaged. I definitely prefer a game where I don’t have to sift through a Bible sized book of instructions in order to play. I really love the Nintendo 3DS and feel it is the perfect platform when you’re ON THE GO in MCO or otherwise. It’s like a small alternate universe you can fit in your pocket. I love keeping the 3D slider on Maximum 3D although it’s a bit of a challenge keeping your eyes in the “sweet spot” when battling Ursula and other Villains!

So, now, let’s get to Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance! Only for the Nintendo 3DS.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6bIOFaLYd0

You needn’t have played other Kingdom Hearts games in the series to enjoy this title. It helps, but is not needed. Kingdom Hearts is basically a union of Final Fantasy and Disney. On its own, I don’t really like Final Fantasy. When married with Disney, I think it’s magical. It gives the fight between good and evil a real sense of wonder and validates Mickey Mouse as a relevant Hero.

I’d love to give you some of the back story about Kingdom Hearts, but even though I have played and completed every single one, I can’t. I have no idea what the story is. As a true matter of fact, I don’t even think the writers who explain the story even understand it themselves. It’s a convoluted mess that makes me laugh every time I read it. If you get a moment, and it interests you, check out the Wikipedia entry of the storyline and try to make sense of it. It will blow your mind LOL.

kingdom hearts dream drop distance review
Some of the characters in Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance

You play one of two characters in this game, Sora and Riku. The game features seven playable Disney Worlds, including La Cité des Cloches from The Hunchback of Notre Dame; The Grid from Tron: Legacy; Prankster’s Paradise from Pinocchio; Country of the Musketeers from Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers; and Symphony of Sorcery from Fantasia. The two other playable worlds are Traverse Town and The World That Never Was. You alternate between playing as Sora and playing as Riku when a timer runs out and you go into a Dream Drop. It’s fun but also a little gimmicky. It’s really a way of making the game longer without adding more worlds. Meaning, you play the world as Sora and then the same world as Riku with few variations. It can be frustrating when you are just about to kill a boss and you are “dropped” and switched to the other character (shakes fist at sky) J.

Unlike most Disney games, you actually fight in Kingdom Hearts. No blood of course, but using your KeyBlade you bash enemies around in satisfying style. You need to kill the boss of each world as both Sora and Riku in order to save the worlds from evil. Familiar Disney characters and villains are always popping up making it a Disney fans delight. The voice work on the characters is top notch and appears to be the original actors whenever possible.

kingdom hearts dream drop distance review
It is time to protect the Princess!

This installment of the series adds a special “flying” move technique called FLOWMOTION that really makes gliding and pummeling enemies a lot of fun, especially in 3D.

The pet component is totally cool. Remember those virtual reality pets that you needed to take care of on little key chain games back some years ago? This Kingdom Hearts game contains mini games like that.
You can create and “adopt” pets they call spirits that fight alongside Sora and Riku and help you in the game. They are needed to defeat many enemies. You need to nurture these spirit pets to make them more powerful. You get to feed them and pet them using the touch screen. The more attention you give them, the more they level up and become an asset to your game play. Of course, I love the Big Blue Panda Mickey looking one.

Children pick up this game and get into it almost immediately while those of us over 25 will likely need to read the instructions a few times to figure out what is going on. Once you do, it is a marvelous fun romp through Disney fantasy realms where you can escape reality and believe you are saving beloved Disney characters and enchanted places.

Something fun to note – Sora can sometimes be spotted in the Magic Kingdom during Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. I only saw him once but bascially freaked out when I did. He was the most amazingly designed park character I have ever seen – holding his keyblade weapon and all. Try and catch him the next time you are at the MNSSHP event! The first person to tweet me a NEW picture of Sora from this year’s event gets a prize!

Also – A new Kingdom Hearts game is in the works for all the major current and upcoming new consoles within the next year. If you get a chance to play this Nintendo 3DS installment, you’ll be seasoned enough to take on the next big screen Kingdom Hearts when it is released!

Now go forth and save the Disney Worlds!

3. Are you going to dress up for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party? If so, what will your costume be? If not, of all the costumes you have seen what was your favorite?
Cheryl – One year we saw Wizard of Oz characters
Megan – I have a few costumes that I have in mind.  Of course, buying a new pair of Halloween ears to wear is always acceptable.
Shalon – Not sure yet would like to but need to think if something different to do
Shelley – This year I went as a fancy Minnie Mouse, since she is my favorite character.
Aurora – I am still working on a costume. I was a Sailor Girl the past two years. This year I am undecided so far.
Beth – Normally I just wear a personalized Mickey Halloween shirt, but this year I’m thinking of one of the princess tutu’s (from the kids dept) and a tank top.  Or my Tower of Terror 10 miler costume which is still a secret.
Betsy – I don’t think I’m going to dress up this year since I’m going early and it is still likely to be hot and humid. In the past I’ve gone as a pirate or just worn a Halloween themed tshirt.

Star Wars Celebration VI – The Clone Wars Panel

Star Wars Celebration VI was full of great panels, and our first one of the convention was The Clone Wars Panel. The scheduled panelists were Supervising Director Dave Filoni and Visual Special Effects Supervisor Joel Aron. After Star Wars Weekends at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, I was very excited for this panel.  Arriving early we managed to find seats near the front of the hall. While waiting, Todd made friends with the hosts of a Star Wars Podcast.

Dave Filoni and Joel Aron
Onderon Fighters
Onderon Dragons

Dave and Joel dove right in showing us drawings of Onderon, a planet that is well known by fans of the Dark Empire Series of Star Wars books. They discussed tribal influences, and how with this season the Jedi will begin to shift their goals from saving the universe to teaching the universe to save itself. They then showed us a clip of a battle on Onderon.

Map of Anakin’s Room
Anakin’s Room

Discussion turned to the Jedi and their possessions. Reminding us that while most Jedi are trained from birth, Anakin had a life before the order, and as such his bedroom had more to offer than other rooms. Showing us some designs for a new set for his bedroom we learned some of what they planned would be in there. They finally showed us a clip of Anakin and Obi Wan talking in Anakin’s bedroom about his relationship with Padmé.  In the scene was a nod to the movies in the form of a pod-racing poster featuring Sebulba and Ben Quadinaros in his room.

Comet Storm
Republic Commando

The next part concentrated on droids, and Dave commented about how children could go interact with droids in the Expo Hall and how you should spend some time watching them do this if you had a chance. The next clip shown was of droids on a ship being led by R2-D2 on some sort of unknown mission, and we got to see them get caught in a field of comets. We then shifted to drawings of a Republic Hover Commando. We learned from Dave that he used one of the first painted hockey goalie masks as a reference for the Commando’s mask. They then showed a clip of the Republic Commando in action as he provided backup for the droids.

Bad Guys
Black Sun
Bo Katan

Next we got to see a series of scenes and images including Darth Maul and Savage Opress working with Pre Vizsla, Leader of the Death Watch.  Some images were presented of members of the Black Sun, a criminal syndicate from Star Wars novels.  The big crowd pleasing scene was when we got to see the Bo Katan lead a team to rescue Obi Wan. After she takes out his captors, Bo Katan does this hair flip at the end of the scene that was both intricate and made it seem like her fight was effortless. Dave brought up a convention guest who was dressed like Bo Katan to demonstrate how popular she had become and why we were getting to see more of her.

George Lucas

After a few more scenes, the lights came back on, and sitting on stage was George Lucas.  It was unexpected and unscheduled.  George discussed that he and the writers had to figure out how to bring Darth Maul back, and why he was in the Clone Wars television series among other things. Then they showed us the Clone Wars season 5 trailer.  Both of which you can see in the following video (The trailer is at 5:24 and runs until 8:50).

The Clone Wars Panel was definitely a highlight of our time at Star Wars Celebration VI!
