Dream Big, Princess Movie Series Returns to AMC this Fall

Dream Big, Princess Movie Series Fall 2019

AMC Movie Theatres have once again partnered with Disney’s Dream Big, Princess program this Fall to bring four beloved Disney princess feature films to the big screen for audiences to enjoy.

Some of these haven’t been shown on the big screen in ages, meaning it might be a first-time viewing for young Disney fans.

While we are still months away from Walt Disney Animation whisking audiences back to the mythical land of Arendelle for the further adventures of Anna and Elsa in FROZEN II, this is a great way to get excited for the new film coming to theaters on November 22nd!

The schedule for the 2019 Dream Big, Princess program will be as follows.

Dream Big, Princess Movie Series AMC Movie Theatres Fall 2019
Walt Disney Animation Studios

The Little Mermaid: September 6–12

Purchase Advance Tickets

Soon to be made into a live-action feature starring Halle Bailey, THE LITTLE MERMAID follows a restless mermaid who dreams of one day living on the surface. To get there, Ariel trades her greatest gift — her beautiful singing voice — for a pair of legs. Come for the music, including brilliant songs like “Under the Sea,” which won a Best Original Song Oscar in 1989.

Dream Big, Princess Movie Series AMC Movie Theatres Fall 2019
Walt Disney Animation Studios

Beauty and the Beast: September 13–19

Purchase Advance Tickets

A tale as old as time … and one that always warrants a big-screen viewing. The 1991 animated version translates the classic romance for a contemporary audience, riding on the coattails of some incredible songs, such as “Be Our Guest” as well as the title track.

Dream Big, Princess Movie Series AMC Movie Theatres Fall 2019
Walt Disney Animation Studios

Tangled: September 20–26

Purchase Advance Tickets

Rapunzel may have let down her hair, but TANGLED did not let down animation audiences looking for a new winner from Walt Disney Animation. Mandy Moore plays the fiery Rapunzel, and she is no damsel in distress. But the true star of TANGLED is the animators who turned Rapunzel’s flowing blonde hair into its own character.

Dream Big, Princess Movie Series AMC Movie Theatres Fall 2019
Walt Disney Animation Studios

The Princess and the Frog: September 27–October 3

Purchase Advance Tickets

Relatively new compared to the other titles on this list, though PRINCESS has built up a steady fan base over the years, and we expect them to turn out to see this one on the big screen once again. FROG has a distinct New Orleans flavor to it, tapping into the music and cuisine of the Bayou. But it also has star power, with Anika Noni Rose, Keith David and Oprah Winfrey all lending their voices.

Each film in the series will get a one-week run in participating theatres.

It’s worth noting that this will be the animated version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST — the one that was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars— and that warrants a big-screen revisiting every chance we get.

Advance Purchase tickets for the Dream Big, Princess series at AMC Movie Theatre are available now using the links under each movie title (which, BTW, are NOT affiliate links), and if you are looking to visit the AMC at Disney Springs showings are at 2pm and 6pm at the AMC DINE-IN Disney Springs 24.

A Spoiler Free Look At Iron Man 3

424528_566010570097140_1831424046_n

As you know from my podcast the Disney Film Project Podcast, that I’m quite a geek when it comes to anything comic books, superheroes, Star Wars, etc. Just 5 short years ago, superhero movies, while popular, were considered by general audiences to be below the bar.  Sufficient in making money for studios, few great successes, and many outright failures.  Then in 2008 everything changed, because the bar was raised when the first Iron Man movie came out.  For many years, even before the movie project was announced, fans had asked for actor Robert Downey Jr. (RDJ) to take on the role of Tony Stark.  Fans saw his own addiction to narcotics and recovery as a strong bond between him and the character whose own past includes an addiction to alcohol.  The industry listened to the fans.  The actor was completely on board.  And the movie was a huge success.

Now, almost 5 years to the day, many people are going to be heading out to their local movie theater to go see the movie Iron Man 3.  It’s hard to think that this may be one of the last times that RDJ might be playing the character though there’s a good chance that he’ll renegotiate his contract as long as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) continues to be the blockbuster success that it has been.  Which would be good news for fans like myself, the thought of anyone else playing the role is almost painful.

The first Iron Man movie was about how Tony Stark becomes Iron Man, whereas the second one was about the price of having that power, and the mortality of the man inside the armor.  Iron Man 3 carries this theme that is very common in the Iron Man comic books forward quite a bit.  Now Tony Stark isn’t just a guy in a suit of high tech armor doing his own thing, he’s a hero the world over.  He’s a survivor of the “Battle of Manhattan” from The Avengers, he’s had his shawarma, and he’s at a loss of what to do next.

And he wanders through much of this movie in the same way many other victims of war do.  Wrought with regret and anxiety for what he experienced, and how it changes his future.  He can’t sleep, he’s angry, and he’s having anxiety attacks.  And this has been going on for some time.  The only real indication we have about how much time has passed is that at the end of The Avengers, Tony dons his Mark VII (7) armor.  In Iron Man 3 he’s wearing a prototype suit of armor dubbed Mark XLII (42) – making this as little as 6 weeks later.

I’ll be honest, I loved this movie, but as you can see from everything above, I’m a bit biased.  It has a feeling about it that is just the right way to go for what is essentially a downtime piece between Avengers movies more than it is the third part of a trilogy.  It missed the mark for me on exactly one point where I thought to myself that I don’t care how riddled with crazy Tony’s head is, at this point I want to see him do *this* and he didn’t.  But there is just an amazing amount of both heart and humor that will endear people to this character even more than he was before.

It paves the way for some of my MCU predictions like the now ever popular Coulson Lives in a way that is really going to prove more interesting than such a thing was ever depicted in comic books.  But we’re talking about a series of movies that made the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier believable – a movie moment that I’d wanted to see my entire life and literally made me cry tears of joy.  That said, this movie didn’t have a moment like that for me.  But that didn’t lessen it for me – as I said, it’s a downtime piece.  And I very much enjoyed seeing Tony be more than just a man outside the armor, yet still need the armor to be the whole set piece of the character.

Be forewarned, once you see this movie you will realize that you have been played.  I won’t say how or why, but know that this movie does something that I feel that no one could have foreseen or predicted from any of the advertising material (posters, trailers, etc.).  And it’s totally awesome on so many levels.  To the point where I feel it changes movie advertising quite a bit.

As has been the case with all of the previous MCU movies, it’s important for the viewer to stay past the credits for the “bonus scene”.  This one is cute and clever and is more like a “bookend” for the movie as a whole then an “extra moment”.  The end credits are simply amazing.  They will have you leaving Iron Man 3 and wanting to go watch old television shows like Magnum P.I., Charlies Angels, and the original Hawaii Five-0.

Overall every fan of Iron Man will definitely want to rush out to see this movie as planned.  Non-fans may not like it so much, mostly because they’ll be watching for it to be a typical action/adventure movie, which it clearly is not.  If you’re somewhere in between the two, then YMMV (your mileage may vary).

In addition to doing the web design and programming for the On the Go in MCO website, Todd Perlmutter is a host for the Disney Film Project Podcast.  You can join him and his fellow hosts for a Live Review of Iron Man 3 on Thursday, May 9, 2013.

Oz The Great and Powerful Review

I thought that I should begin my Oz the Great and Powerful review with some disclaimers:

  1. I love the original Wizard of Oz!
  2. I was super excited for a week straight when I found out I was going to an early viewing to see “Oz The Great and Powerful”, no lie.
  3. I’m not sure how appropriate this movie is for kids. I’m not a parent, but some of the things said were kind of grown-uppish and those dang monkeys are way scarier than before!
  4. While I’m going to do my best to not talk about any spoilers, this is the warning, just in case you feel as though there is a spoiler in the mix, but I don’t think there is.

Like I said, I am definitely apart of the group that LOVES Wizard of Oz. I grew up watching it and I couldn’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve seen it over the years.

As soon as I found out that a ‘new’ Oz movie was being made I freaked out and then promptly forgot about it because I didn’t want to watch any trailers before seeing the movie. I did, however, make sure that it wasn’t going to be a remake. And that it is not, thankfully.

But before we get to that, I feel I need to mention how great it was to see the Monsters University trailer on the big screen! Oh and we also saw the Iron Man 3 trailer.

oz-great-powerful-full

Oscar “Oz” Diggs is a magician in a small circus. He’s an egotistical ladies man who tries to impress pretty much any girl he meets. While part of me wanted to not like him, that just couldn’t happen.

Oz gets swept away from the circus he’s traveling with and makes it to the bright and beautiful Land of Oz where he meets an Oz local and he gets filled in on what the current status of Oz is.

After making his journey to Oz (have you lost count as to how many times I’ve said Oz yet?), he meets all three witches and we find out all three have very different personalities and all get along with Oz in very different ways – keep in mind, he’s being himself when it comes to how he talks to them.

After his trip through the Dark Forest, Oz realizes he has to work his magic…literally. And while you think Oz’s trickery can only get him so far, he truly is great and powerful.

There were some twist and turns that I honestly didn’t see coming. But getting introduced to some likable and even some unlikable (in a good way) characters makes for a great movie. When we meet the people of Oz I felt like I was back in my childhood home watching Wizard of Oz.

All in all, I loved this movie. I chuckled and laughed throughout the movie, one liners always tend to get me.

I loved that we get to see the beginning of Oz, the man and Oz, the land. There was even some little added tie-ins to Wizard of Oz –a lion shows up and scarecrows…does that mean I missed a tin man? Guess I need to see it again to be sure!

Oh and yes, there are a TON of computer-animated backgrounds, but that’s part of what kept me glued to the movie and feeling like I was actually in Land of Oz.

The 3D elements in this were great. Nothing overwhelming. Certain bits and pieces were perfect for 3D! This is the first movie in a while where I thought the 3D actually worked overall.

The cast was very well put together and I feel like everything worked amazingly. I will be seeing “Oz The Great and Powerful” again in theaters and it will be added into my “to watch over-and-over again” movie rotation as soon as it’s released on DVD.

Tinker Bell And The Secret Of The Wings ** Spoiler Free **

Tinker Bell and the Secret of the Wings

Tinker Bell and the Secret of the Wings

Being the proud father of a six year old little princess obsessed with all things Tinker Bell, I have seen the previous three Fairies movies more times that should be allowed by law.  However, Disney has done a fantastic job keeping this franchise alive and fresh much longer than most, and they definitely didn’t disappoint this time around.  Their ability to take a secondary character and transform her into a compelling central figure has been unmatched with this franchise. Kids, at least mine, can’t get enough of the misadventures of this spunky sprite and her band of fairy friends.

Disney’s fourth animated Fairies tale, Tinker Bell And The Secret Of The Wings, follows the continued adventures, and misadventures of Tinker Bell and the fairies of Pixie Hollow.  Once again Tink’s curiosity and knack for trouble takes her on a journey into a place forbidden for warm weather fairies to go.   The Winter Woods, a cold unforgiving side of Pixie Hollow, lies just beyond a stream at the border of the warm weather fairies domain.  While helping animal migrate to the Winter Woods, Tink’s curiosity drives her across the border into the cold where she experiences her wings glowing brightly in the cold and snowy air.  When she discovers the answers to the mystery of her miraculous glowing wings lies deep in the Winter Woods with the winter fairies, her adventure begins. But she will soon discover that both joy and danger await her on her journey.

Tinker Bell and The Secret of the Wings is a sweet, heartfelt story about love, determination, tolerance, and the importance of family. It manages to take a simple concept and story line  and deliver a great message while maintaining a high entertainment value.  My 6 year old daughter, who generally can’t sit through an entire movie, was captivated from start to finish. It flowed very nicely though the story, and there was very little down time, so it kept the attention of my little girl throughout.  It is a great movie for the whole family, and with a running time under 90 minutes, it is perfect for the younger kids as well. The dazzling animation will hook you, and the great story telling will keep you captivated to the very end.  Secret of the Wings was as good, if not better that all three previous films, and I would highly recommend it to any fans of family movies, not just the Disney fans out there.

Petes Dragon Celebrating 35 Years And Now Avaialble On Disney BluRay

Petes Dragon
Pete’s Dragon is Celebrating it’s 35th Anniversary on BluRay!

PETES DRAGON 35th Anniversary Edition BLU_RAY

Available for the First Time in High Definition with New Digital Restoration on October 16th, 2012 in a 2-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack

Petes Dragon is one of the first Disney movies that I saw as a child, and was one of my favorites.  I had not seen it since I was my daughter’s age, so it was great to be able to watch it with her like it was my first time.  The timeless story of lost and rediscovered love never gets old and makes for a great family movie.

This endearing story between Pete and his invisible dragon friend Elliott as they develop a special bond and share a magical friendship is a classic Walt Disney movie that is a must see.  With memorable cast of characters, Mickey Rooney, Helen Reddy, Sean Marshall, Red Buttons, and Jim Dale, and heartwarming songs including the 1977 Academy Award “Best Original Song” nominee, “Candle On The Water,” Pete’s Dragon 35th Anniversary is the perfect timeless classic every member of your family will love.

When Pete, an orphan, and his best friend Elliot, an invisible green dragon, wander into the seaside village of Passamaquody, the townspeople think he’s behind a slew of hilarious mishaps. But after a daring rescue, they change their tune and believe in Pete’s fire-breathing buddy.

While the transfer of the film to High Definition isn’t without its flaws, the movie still holds a lot of charm! And the Bonus Features on Petes Dragon are a lot of fun! We really enjoyed looking at Brazzle Dazzle Effects: Behind Disney’s Movie Magic and the Deleted Storyboard Sequence: “Terminus & Hoagy Hunt Elliott”.

If you ever had an invisible friend when you were younger or remember watching this movie when you were younger, you won’t want to miss the chance to relive this movie classic again!

The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under Available on Disney Blu-Ray

The Rescuers
The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under Available Now on Disney Blu-Ray!

To commemorate the 35th anniversary of an original classic, Disney proudly presents a special 2-movie collection featuring all-time family favorites, The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under, for the first time ever on Blu-ray! Join two of the world’s bravest mice – Bernard and Bianca – as they set out on two thrilling rescue missions full of comic adventure while soaring through the Devil’s Bayou and flying sky high in the Australian outback.

The Rescuers Is based on the children’s books by Margery Sharp, which are great reads, and are full of great adventures and lessons for the whole family.

In The Rescuers, Miss Bianca and Bernard travel to Louisiana to rescue Penny from the evil Madame Medusa.  While I really enjoyed the story of the The Rescuers the animation definitely has its moments yet in the end it just isn’t as great as other Disney Animated Classics. I also had a really hard time becoming invested in Madame Medusa as a villain. Zoe spent a lot of time laughing and enjoying The Rescuers, because it is filled with face paced action and tons of gags that she found hilarious.

Also included in this 35th Anniversary combo pack is The Rescuers Down Under, the sequel to the original movie. With the same general premise, except set in Australia, the movie tries really hard but never makes it up to the same level as The Rescuers The comedy is more slap-stick and the action is a little lack luster at times.

As with all other Disney Blu-Ray movies , The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under is chocked full of some great Bonus Features!!!

  • “Peoplitis” is a deleted song written for a scene that was never animated. Ron Clements introduces us to the scene (using storyboards) and song as sung by Louis Prima
  •  “The Three Blind Mouseketeers” is a 1936 Silly Symphony cartoon
  • Water Birds is the Oscar-winning 1952 short feature in the True-Life Adventure series detailing many different species of water fowl with the legendary nature photography Disney became known for. This is in 1080p and runs for 30 minutes.
  • “Someone’s Waiting for You” sing along song offers on-screen lyrics with clips from The Rescuers.
  • “The Making of The Rescuers Down Under is a vignette giving a few minutes of face time to producer Thomas Schumacher, directors Hendel Butoy and Mike Gabriel, several animators, and the film’s art director discussing the two year production period that included a research trip to Australia and trips to the San Diego Zoo to watch real animals in motion.

Walt Disney Pocahontas and Pocahontas II available on Blu-Ray!

Walt Disney Pocahontas and Pocahontas II is available on Blu-Ray on August 21, 2012.

Walt Disney Pocahontas and Pocahontas II: Journey into a New World available on Blu-Ray today!

Walt Disney Pocahontas and Pocahontas II: Journey into a New World action-packed animated musical adventure Pocahontas and Pocahontas II: Journey into a New World debut for the first time ever in vivid High Definition on August 21, 2012.

Combined also for the first time in a two-movie collection, the release allowed families and fans of all ages to own these timeless stories of hope, courage, and friendship on a Blu-Ray Combo pack which includes three discs of movies, music, extras, and more!

While I enjoy Walt Disney Pocahontas, I am not a huge fan of it’s sequel Pocahontas II: Journey into a New World, which felt very forced and choppy. The movies are absolutely beautiful! The hand drawn animation is just breath taking!

The two most enjoyable bonus features that I absolutely enjoyed were Drawing Inspiration: The Lost Story of Hiawatha and the “Little Hiawatha” Cartoon Short. Drawing Inspiration: The Lost Story of Hiawatha  is a fascinating behind-the-scenes featurette showing how Walt Disney and his team were once developing a full-length animated feature called “Hiawatha”, that ultimately influenced the development of Walt Disney Pocahontas. and the  “Little Hiawatha” Cartoon Short totally reminds me of Thanksgiving time when I was younger.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcGJDcPVZfs&feature=share&list=PL790E72ECB21BAB6C

The three disc Blu-Ray Combo Pack (1 Disc Blu-Ray and 2 Disc DVD), includes the movie plus…

  • Drawing Inspiration: The Lost Story of Hiawatha – During the 1940’s, Walt Disney and his team were developing a full-length animated feature called “Hiawatha”. During the early stages of development for Walt Disney “Pocahontas”, the directors found the “Hiawatha” storyboards and were amazed at what they saw. It directly influenced their development of “Pocahontas”. Now, for the first time ever, the full story of Walt Disney’s “Hiawatha” will be presented by “Pocahontas” co-director Eric Goldberg and animation historian Charles Solomon.
  • Deleted Song: “If I Never Knew You”  – Walt Disney Pocahontas co-director Eric Goldberg introduces this fully animated deleted song, now in HD.  Optional audio commentary with co-directors Eric Goldberg & Mike Gabriel and producer James Pentecost.
  • The Music of Pocahontas
  • “Little Hiawatha” Cartoon Short
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Walt Disney “Pocahontas” Audio Commentary – with co-directors Eric Goldberg & Mike Gabriel and producer James Pentecost.
  • Virtual Vault – A collection of past bonus features, offered via online streaming.

I hope that you enjoy the Walt Disney Pocahontas and Pocahontas II:Journey to a New World on Blu-Ray Combo Pack!

ABOUT THE MOVIE

From Walt Disney Animation Studios and Emmy®-winning director Rich Moore comes “Wreck-It Ralph,” a hilarious, arcade-game-hopping adventure. For decades, Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) has been overshadowed by Fix-It Felix, Jr. (voice of Jack McBrayer), the good-guy star of their game who always gets to save the day. Tired of playing the role of a bad guy, Ralph takes matters into his own massive hands and sets off on a journey across the arcade through multiple generations of video games to prove he’s got what it takes to be a hero.

On his quest, Ralph meets tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch) from the first-person action game Hero’s Duty, and feisty misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman) from the candy-coated cart racing game, Sugar Rush, who may just be his first real friend. But everything changes when a deadly enemy is unleashed, threatening the entire arcade and Vanellope herself. Ralph finally gets his chance to save the day—but can he do it in time? “Wreck-It Ralph” crashes onto the big screen on November 2, 2012, in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

Oz: The Great And Powerful Trailer Released

From Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures:

Oz: The Great and Powerful will be released March 8, 2013

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.
