Phineas And Ferb: Mission Marvel

The fate of the Tri-State area – and the world – hangs in the balance as Agent P and Danville’s most dynamic duo team up with four of Marvel’s greatest Super Heroes- Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Spider-Man – in one awesome full-length adventure.

After Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s latest “-inator” scheme accidentally removes the powers of some very well-known Marvel Super Heroes (Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, and Hulk), the heroes enter the world of Danville and team up with Phineas and Ferb to relocate their powers, defeat the Marvel Super Villains (Red Skull, MODOK, Whiplash and Venom) – who have also shown up to steal Doofenshmirtz’s power-draining technology – and save Danville from ultimate destruction!

Good Luck Charlie and The Incredibles

I’ve been watching the Disney Channel show Good Luck Charlie and thought the patriarch, Bob Duncan, reminded me a lot of Bob Parr, aka Mr. Incredible, from the Disney/Pixar movie the Incredibles. Both men have similar builds at the beginning being big and tall guys with similar blond haircuts. I believe their similarities go further than the physical if you’ll allow me to indulge.

Bob Parr of the Incredibles

In Good Luck Charlie, Bob Duncan is an exterminator who wears a uniform for his job. Mr. Incredible wears a uniform when he is in his superhero mode. Both have larger than average family sizes with three to five kids each. Even their family members have some common threads.

Each family has at least two boys and one girl. Good Luck Charlie focuses primarily on Teddy, the girl who is making the video diaries for her baby sister Charlie. I would say of the children in the Parr family, Violet seems to get the most attention. The two girls are the most likely in their respective families to behave in school, not get in as much trouble as their younger brothers, and aren’t the most confident around boys.

Speaking of trouble, in the Incredibles, Dash is a bit of a troublemaker as evidenced by his mom, Helen, getting called into the principal’s office after Dash tormented a teacher. Gabe Duncan of Good Luck Charlie is a first class expert in causing trouble in and out of school, to the point it seems his mom is in school almost as often as he is.

Their are some differences too, like Good Luck Charlie has an older brother, PJ, while the Incredibles other brother is a baby named Jack Jack. While their ages are obviously on opposite ends of the spectrum, I’d say these two boys are the most innocent and childlike in their respective families. The Duncan family also now has two other children, the aforementioned little girl Charlie and now another baby boy named Toby.

Back to the Bobs. Each of these two men are the breadwinners in their homes while their wives take on the role (eventually for Amy Duncan) of stay at home mom. Helen Parr is the most flexible 😉 as Elastigirl, but she and Amy do have some things in common. Often Amy and Helen are put in positions to rescue their husbands from the error of their ways. Progressing through Good Luck Charlie and the Incredibles, both Bobs go through amazing physical transformations. Bob Duncan even played a superhero, Captain Extermo, in a Halloween episode of season 3 of Good Luck Charlie. Although, if Edna Mode of the Incredibles was around, I’m sure she would have told him, “no capes!”

So what do you think? Have you seen both Good Luck Charlie and the Incredibles? Did you notice the likenesses between the Bobs and the Duncan and Parr families? Let me know.

Teen Beach Movie – A Blast From The Past

D23 Expo Teen Beach Movie
Teen Beach Movie

SPOILER ALERT – I will be spoiling parts of Teen Beach Movie during this review, so if you haven’t seen it yet, go now!

Teen Beach Movie is clearly not marketed towards me. I’m a couple decades removed from my teen years, but having said that, I loved this Disney Channel Original Movie! As I write this, I am watching it for the fourth time in the last eight days if that tells you anything. And I already own the soundtrack and have played it on repeat more than a few times. As one who loves classic films and the surf culture of the 1960s, I am not at all surprised I love this. I am just glad it didn’t disappoint as the movie premiere has been on my calendar for months.

The story of Teen Beach Movie is that of two teens, Mackenzie “Mack” (Maia Mitchell) and Brady (Ross Lynch), who love to surf. They are at the end of their summertime romance thanks to a promise Mack made to her aunt years ago when her mom passed away. Mack must now leave the beach where she has lived with her grandfather and his surfboard shop, as well as Brady to head “back east” to go to a prestigious prep school for the rest of high school. This sets up the initial conflict between Brady and Mack that will be carried throughout the rest of the movie when Mack breaks off their relationship since she is moving.

Teen Beach Movie is dedicated to Annette Funicello who passed away recently. This is a perfectly fitting tribute to the Disney Legend and star of such fun films like Beach Blanket Bingo from the early to mid 1960s. One of Brady’s favorite films, Wet Side Story, is reminiscent of a classic Frankie (Avalon) and Annette beach movie. It takes place in 1962 and is a fun musical that is centered around a conflict between the surfers and bikers and a love story that brings them together. Mack and Brady soon find themselves closer to the movie than they’d ever imagined.

On the day Mack is supposed to leave with her aunt to go to school, the waves are supposed to be epic, once in a lifetime 30-40ft ones that most surfers only dream of. Before her flight Mack decides to try to catch one last wave. Brady shows up to support Mack, despite the fact she broke up with him, knowing full well she wouldn’t leave without trying to take advantage of the historic surf conditions. While Mack is trying to catch a huge wave her grandfather and Brady notice a nasty storm approaching and red flags being waved by the lifeguards. Mack ignores the warnings and stays out to try to catch the big one. Brady charges after her on a jetski to try to save her, but she insists she doesn’t need saving, and he has now ruined her chance of catching the wave. They both go under the surf after she wipes out.

The next scene of Teen Beach Movie finds Mack and Brady in a sunny beach scene with calm surf. As they walk to the shore, Mack fist notices something is amiss. Singing teen surfers cause Mack to think they may have died and ended up in a musical. Soon after they realize they have somehow been transported into the world of Wet Side Story! Brady couldn’t be more thrilled and jumps right in to have fun in one of his favorite movies. Mack is more reluctant to simply embrace their time/space travel. This is done with quite a bit of humor as Brady knows all the words and choreography while Mack is definitely a fish out of water. I love Maia Mitchell’s comedic timing and performance throughout the Teen Beach Movie, but it is especially showcased here and during her performance later in Can’t Stop Singing.

I won’t go through the entire plot, but I will say when I watched it through a few times, that Teen Beach Movie was definitely inspired by some of my favorite films. The time travel elements are similar to those in Back to the Future along with things out of time disappearing. The obvious correlation is made between Wet Side Story and West Side Story. Substitute the Jets and the Sharks for the surfers and the biker gang called the Rodents. Much like West Side Story, the boy leader on one side of the feud falls for (or at least is supposed to) a girl on the other side who is the sister of the rival’s leader. Throw in some elements of Grease and Pleasantville, mix together with Beach Blanket Bingo and a little bit of a zany Scooby Doo plot, and you’ve got Teen Beach Movie.

To their credit, I think the kids acting in the movie do a fantastic job playing homage to the days of old. The costumes and sets of Teen Beach Movie are colorful and fun and everything summer should be. I love how the comedy is easily accessible to those of all ages. There isn’t anything in the movie that made me feel the least bit uncomfortable about watching it with a seven year old. The choreography feels much more advanced than that found in another one of my favorite Disney Channel Original Movies, High School Musical. I especially love the songs and already have the Teen Beach Movie soundtrack on my phone! They feel genuine and representative of the time in which the movie is supposed to be set. I am hard pressed to pick favorites, but I love Surf Crazy and Can’t Stop Singing … and Fallin For Ya and Like Me. Okay, I’ll stop.

Surf Crazy
Surf Crazy

Back to Teen Beach Movie … with Mack and Brady trapped in Wet Side Story in 1962, they must find a way to get back to the present. Mack is definitely more motivated to get back to the future and to keep her promise to her deceased mom by going to private school. Brady is fine staying put and just wants to enjoy the moment, but realizes how important it is to Mack and decides it is best to try to get back home. Hilarity ensues when Mack and Brady’s presence interferes with the love story between leads Tanner of the surfers and Lela of the bikers. While they try to get things back on track, the kids get to enjoy a few days in the movie world.

Part of what Mack struggles with most in the past is the role girls played in 1962 compared to what she is used to for gender roles in 2013. As she tries to question the paradigm that everyone else in the movie embraces as the status quo, she inadvertently helps Lela discover that there is more to life than just baking pies for the boys. There are definite feminist undertones to Teen Beach Movie and Mack’s character in particular, but it is to be expected with the culture shock of taking a teen from the 21st century and putting her in pre-feminist movement mid-century America. I think they handled it well and with comedy. In the end it turns out Mack learns as much from Lela as she teaches her new friend. Lela learns it is okay to surf like a boy and to know the mechanics of motorcycles. Mack discovers she won’t dishonor her mom’s memory by following her heart and staying at the beach with Brady instead of going to private school.

All in all Teen Beach Movie is a ton of fun, has great song and dance numbers, action, romance and most of all comedy. The lead characters of Mack and Lela are the most dynamic I think, but even some of the more two dimensional background characters are enjoyable. I cannot get enough of it! It is staying on my dvr for a while until I can get to the store to buy it on dvd. As I mentioned, the soundtrack is already available as well and debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200 chart and was the number 1 soundtrack and children’s album according to Marketwatch. As I write this, the soundtrack is currently the number 3 selling album on iTunes. USA Today reported that Teen Beach Movie had over 8.4 million viewers for its premiere here. You can bet I will be watching as the dance along edition airs too. I’ve already seen the regular version three times and the sing along edition. Teen Beach Movie is one that I can literally watch over and over again and it is right up there with High School Musical as one of my favorite DCOMs of all time.

Have you seen Teen Beach Movie yet? What did you think? Who were your favorite characters? What is your favorite song? Make sure you watch all the way to the end for some hilarious outtakes postcredits.

Happy Teen Beach Movie Day!

D23 Expo Teen Beach Movie

Happy Teen Beach Movie Day!!!

If your house is anything like mine, there is much rejoicing that this summer’s DCom Teen Beach Movie premieres tonight!

The television premiere of Teen Beach Movie, a Disney Channel Original Movie sponsored by Honda and Best Western International, is FRIDAY, JULY 19 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney Channel U.S. followed by telecasts on Disney Channels around the world. This contemporary surf-rock musical looks like a lot of fun, and stars Ross Lynch, Maia Mitchell, Garrett Clayton, Grace Phipps, John Deluca, Chrissie Fit, Barry Bostwick, Kevin Chamberlin and Steve Valentine Star.

httpv://youtu.be/GCtQH4Jg9uc

“Teen Beach Movie” introduces confident, resilient surfer McKenzie and her carefree boyfriend Brady, a fan of the retro surf musical movie, “Wet Side Story.”  On the morning of McKenzie’s planned departure for boarding school, she and Brady catch one last epic wave which mysteriously carries them right into “Wet Side Story,” circa 1962, where they meet Seacat, Giggles, Rascal and Cheechee, among others.   Amidst the spontaneous song and dance, there’s trouble in paradise — it’s bikers versus surfers for control of the local hangout but Mack and Brady unwittingly interfere with the movie’s star-crossed plot, one that would pair a surfer (the teen matinee idol Tanner) and a biker (Lela, the sister of Butchy, the biker gang’s leader).  Typical of the teen beach movie genre, a kooky subplot has mad scientists Les Camembert and Dr. Fusion scheming to alter weather patterns and take over the local hangout and then, the world.

Also, to celebrate Teen Beach Movie Typhoon Lagoon is hosting the Teen Beach Movie: Dance Party that is held several times a day and features a hip DJ spinning remixes of retro tunes, beach-y-themed games and some really rad “bikers” and “surfers” to party with guests as they dance away the dog days. Taking over part of Typhoon Lagoon’s main beach and wave pool area, guests can participate in relays on the sand, hula hoop spinning, water balloon and beach ball tossing, and the grooviest dance moves this side of Mt. Mayday. The Teen Beach Movie: Dance Party is going on until September 1, 2013 as part of Limited Time Magic!

Doc McStuffins: Friendship Is The Best Medicine Available Now on DVD

Doc McStuffins: Friendship Is The Best Medicine Available August 21, 2012 on DVD

“Doc McStuffins” is Zoe’s favorite shows on the Disney Channel, and when she watched “Doc McStuffins: Friendship Is The Best Medicine” it was like time stood still!

“Doc McStuffins” is an imaginative animated series about Doc McStuffins, a six-year-old girl who communicates with and heals stuffed animals and broken toys out of her backyard playhouse clinic.  Assisting Doc with the day-to-day operations at the clinic are her much-loved friends: Stuffy, an overly proud dragon; Lambie, her  cuddly best friend; Hallie, a jolly and caring  hippo nurse; Squeakers, an alarmist squeaky toy fish; and Chilly, a snowman who spends a lot of time getting check-ups at the clinic.  Whether it’s a case of loose stitching, low batteries or a blow-up toy who’s sprung a leak, Doc and her pals are always there to lend a helping hand, while imparting to young viewers the importance of taking care of oneself and others.  Each episode features two 11-minute stories and an original song and showcases the hallmarks of great Disney storytelling – fantasy and wish fulfillment.

“Doc McStuffins” is an animated television series that airs daily on both the Disney Junior programming block on Disney Channel and the new 24-hour Disney Junior channel.  It is cable’s #1 series among Kids 2-5, and 2012’s #1 preschool cable TV series in Total Viewers and Women 18-49

“Doc McStuffins: Friendship Is The Best Medicine” includes a DVD featuring five full length episodes, each consisting of two 11-minute stories, a Digital Copy of the episodes, and it also comes packaged with Doc’s special Big Book of Boo-Boos with fun activities plus character and boo-boo bandage stickers. The episodes are just the right length to keep her involved in the stories, but not too long to where she loses interest!

I love “Doc McStuffins”, because it has helped dealing with boo-boos and visits to the Doctor much easier for both of us! Not only does it make a lot of the things that happen at the Doctor’s office less scary, it makes her understand why staying healthy and having good hygiene is important.

The lovable characters in the series are voiced by Kiara Muhammad as Doc; Loretta Devine as Hallie; Lara Jill Miller as Lambie; Robbie Rist as Stuffy; Jess Harnell as Chilly; Jaden Betts as Donny McStuffins; Kim Brooks as Mom McStuffins; and Gary Anthony Williams as Dad McStuffins.  The series’ theme song is performed by the star of Disney Channel’s hit series “A.N.T. Farm” and Hollywood Records recording artist, China Anne McClain. Created and executive-produced by Humanitas Prize and Emmy® Award-winning Chris Nee (writer on “Little Bill” and producer of “Deadliest Catch: Crab Fishing in Alaska”) and directed by Emmy® Award-winning Norton Virgien (“Rugrats”), “Doc McStuffins” is a production of Academy Award® nominated Brown Bag Films (Best Animated Short Film “Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty” in 2010)  in association with Disney Channel. The Hollywood Health & Society division of the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center serves as the series’ health and medical consultants, advising on basic health issues that are relevant to young kids and families.

We all really enjoyed “Doc McStuffins: Friendship Is The Best Medicine”, and having the Digital Copy is such a great bonus!!! I can only hope that you all enjoy it as much as we all did…and have since the disc hasn’t left the DVD player yet!!!

Win A Copy Of “Let It Shine: Extended Edition” On DVD Today!!!

Let It Shine Comes to DVD August 7, 2012

The Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) “Let It Shine: Extended Edition” featuring an exclusive extended music scene arrives as a 1-Disc DVD (DVD + Digital Copy on the same disc) Today, August 7, 2012. Set in the world of hip-hop, rap and gospel music, the uplifting and energetic modern day story inspired by Cyrano de Bergerac is driven by its original and catchy soundtrack and stars Tyler James Williams, Coco Jones, Trevor Jackson, Brandon Mychal Smith, Nicole Sullivan, Dawnn Lewis, Alex Desert, and Courtney B. Vance.

Let It Shine is full of great messages about how important family and friends can be and how having self-confidence can help you achieve your dreams,  and most importantly it is also full of fun music that Zoe had a blast dancing around the room to during the movie! Also, the soundtrack of 12 original songs for Let It Shine is great! I was really pleasantly surprised by how much we all enjoyed this DCOM!!!

Celebrating family and friendship, the story unfolds in Atlanta, Georgia, as Cyrus DeBarge (Tyler James Williams) and his best friend Kris McDuffy (Trevor Jackson) reunite with their childhood friend, teenage singing sensation Roxanne “Roxie” Andrews (Coco Jones), whose music label is sponsoring a songwriting contest at a teen club. Cyrus, who writes music under the name “Truth,” crafts a heartfelt and contest-winning rhyme about Roxie but to his dismay, his work is mistakenly attributed to Kris. Lacking the confidence to step forward, Cyrus stands by while Kris not only takes credit for the lyrics, but ultimately begins to win Roxie’s heart too. Now, it’s up to the true poet to overcome self-doubt, seize the opportunity to reveal his authentic self, and pursue his dreams. At the same time, Cyrus must convince his preacher father (Courtney B. Vance) that hip-hop music can convey a positive message.

I do have to say that there is some mild name-calling and confrontation between kids and your expected kids rebelling against adults, but it was nothing that was too over the top or anything you wouldn’t expect from a DCOM. But it’s how the characters handle adversity in Let It Shine that makes it such an enjoyable movie!

Available only on the “Let It Shine: Extended Edition” DVD is the exclusive extended scene featuring Cyrus in his first-ever rap battle of the rhymes against his nemesis, Bling, to establish which performer is the more talented verse master. The truth is in the music!

“Let It Shine” is directed by two-time DGA award winner Paul Hoen (“Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam,” “JONAS”), written by Eric Daniel and Don D. Scott (“Barbershop,” “Barbershop 2: Back in Business”) and choreographed by Danny Teeson (“American Idol”) and associate Brandon Shaw (“So You Think You Can Dance,” NAACP Image Awards). A production of G WaveProductions, LLC., the movie was shot on location in Atlanta and Marietta, Georgia.

If you have a child that is into music, they will thoroughly enjoy Let It Shine! And I will warn you now, that you will enjoy it and find yourself hearing the music at times during your day and it will bring a smile to your face!!!

Crank It Up! Radio Rebel Is Available on DVD June 19th!

Radio Rebel starring Debby Ryan (“Jessie”, 16 Wishes) premiered on The Disney Channel as cable’s #1 scripted telecast in its time period in total viewers (4.3 MM); it was also the #1 telecast of the night for kids 2-14.

Here is a short synopsis of the movie…

To everyone in her home town, Tara Adams (Debby Ryan) is just an ordinary high school junior, except for one thing … she has a secret identity. Truth is, she’s actually Radio Rebel, the most popular DJ in Seattle! In person, Tara is a nondescript, socially under-the-radar, teenager; but get her behind the mic and she becomes Radio Rebel, the coolest personality on the air! This unique status is desperately in need at the moment as her school is in the midst of a clique-crisis. Radio Rebel gives voice to all kids, popular and unpopular alike, and she publicly questions the status quo, which does not sit well with the principal who is determined to uncover Radio Rebel’s true identity. On top of all that mean girl Stacy (Merritt Patterson, “Kyle XY”) is intent on coming between Tara must decide between keeping her alter ego a secret, or being true to herself: a choice with major repercussions.

Zoe was in love with this movie from the start!!! It was a lot of fun to watch her really get into the friendships, get angry at Principal Moreno, and be really excited during the dance at the end.

Radio Rebel is based on the book Shrinking Violet, by Danielle Joseph, was adapted into a movie, certain elements were altered, which included the character Teresa being renamed Tara and also her radio personality was originally Sweet T.

Bonus materials include Debby Ryan’s music video “We Got The Beat”, deleted scenes, Blooper Reel, and five new featurettes (Who is Radio Rebel?, From Prom to MORP, Rockin’ Out with Radio Rebel, On the Set with Debby Ryan, and Red Carpet Rebel). The bonus features are a lot of fun, and Zoe asked me to play the “We Got The Beat” a million times! LOL!

Radio Rebel is a super cute movie that was really enjoyable and a lot of fun!!!

Jake and The Never Land Pirates First Music Soundtrack and DVD

You may notice that Daddy has been taking some time off from the movie reviews (silly work), so it’s Mommy’s turn again to have some movie time with Princess Zoe!

Now that you know why you are suffering with my review…Let’s get to the fun stuff!!!

A new soundtrack and DVD inspired by Disney Junior’s #1 series Jake and the Never Land Pirates, are planned to set sail this September with Walt Disney Records’ album release of eighteen hook-filled songs from the series and The Walt Disney Studios Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Yo Ho, Mateys Away! DVD release featuring seven episodes from the series

Zoe is a HUGE fan of the show, and she was STOKED when the DVD/Soundtrack came in the mail!!!

If you haven’t seen the show, you are definitely missing something! Jake, Izzy (armed with pixie dust), Cubby, and their parrot Skully set sail in their ship, Bucky, in search of treasures and adventures. However, Captain Hook and the every faithful Mr. Smee are always around causing trouble for the foursome. The episodes are filled with lessons about friendship, problem solving, and tons of fun pirate rock. I really think that Sharky and Bones, of the Never Land Pirate Band, are her favorites! When the songs come on at the end of each episode, she is up and off of the couch in .08 seconds!

The DVD bonus features were fun, and Zoe really got a kick out of the Pirate Party with Pirate-oke, where she got to sing along with her favorite pirate band, and Yo, Ho, You Want To Be A Pirate?, where Jake taught her how to talk like a REAL pirate!

The 7-track CD sampler and pirate eye patch were a total bonus!!! I don’t think that the CD is coming out of the car anytime soon!!!

Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Yo Ho, Mateys Away! is a new favorite in our house!!!

Jake and the Never Land Pirates is cable’s #1 series among Boys 2-5 and is on track to be Disney Channel’s #1 preschool series ever. It is the most co-viewed series among all Disney Junior and Nickelodeon series, with 47% of Moms watching with their preschooler. A music-filled interactive treasure hunt, the series introduces a crew of kid pirates – leader Jake and pals Izzy and Cubby – and follows their Never Land adventures as they work to outwit two infamous characters, the one and only Captain Hook and Smee, from Disney’s classic “Peter Pan.” Every episode features the animated Sharky and Bones characters as they pop up throughout to perform original pirate ditties, and each episode concludes with a live action music video featuring The Never Land Pirate Band.

Written and performed by Loren Hoskins and Kevin Hendrickson, a.k.a. Sharky and Bones of The Never Land Pirate Band, the album features 18 swashbuckling tracks sure to thrill any young pirate. Also included are downloadable activities and games to plan the perfect pirate party, a Sing-Along version of the show’s theme song and a bonus track from a future episode. The deluxe edition includes a pirate bandana. The album arrives at stores and online retailers September 20.

The album features a variety of songs that kids and parents can enjoy together. Songs include the kooky, comical “Hot Lava,” “Aw Coconuts,” “Pirate Password,” and the arrrghhh-rated “Talk Like a Pirate.” Some songs refer to popular characters in the show, such as “What’s Cookin’ Smee,” “Captain Hook (Is A Cranky Crook),” “Tick Tock Croc” and “Bucky’s Shanty.” Others capture the island spirit of Never Land, such as “Castaway on Pirate Island,” “Shipwreck Shuffle” and “Never Sky,” as well as the “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” theme song. All songs can be heard in episodes of the show.

Portland, Oregon-based Hoskins and Hendrickson have been creating pirate rock music for kids of all ages for more than a decade. The duo produced four previous children’s albums and even led their own pirate band. The pirate rockers also provide the musical score for “Jake and the Never Land Pirates.”

The Jake and the Never Land Pirates soundtrack will be available wherever music is sold on September 20. For more information on Walt Disney Records’ releases, please visit www.Disney.com/music , become a fan at www.Facebook.com/disneymusic and follow at www.Twitter.com/disneymusic .
