Flashback Friday: My First 5K Race

RaceA little over five years ago, I completed my first 5K race. To some this may not have been a big deal, but to me it was huge. I had just had major knee surgery two years before and really had to train and work hard to be able to complete the race in close to the “required” 16 minute per mile pace.

Why do I bring this up now, you ask? It was a Halloween themed race, the inaugural Mickey’s Halloween 5K, and to my knowledge, the only 5K to go through the Magic Kingdom. Plus, we are on the verge of back to back runDisney race weekends starting next week.  This was also one of the most fun races I’ve ever done out of my almost twenty races to date.

So, I thought I’d share some of my pictures and memories from the race since it is almost Halloween. It started at the Transportation and Ticket Center, then the race course went on World Drive under the water bridge and up to the Contemporary. The course took a left along the bus loop and into the Magic Kingdom.

Stepping onto Main Street for the first time as a part of a race was magical to say the least. Cast members greeted us and cheered as we approached the castle. There were even a good amount of characters like Chip, Dale, and Goofy  dressed up in Halloween costumes meeting guests along the course. There were also villains like Jafar, the Queen of Hearts, as well as Tweedles Dee and Dum, Buzz, and Woody.

I loved running down Main Street, through Adventureland, Frontierland, Liberty Square, the Hub, and out through Tomorrowland. My second favorite part of the race aside from running through the park was seeing the Haunted Mansion grave diggers posing with runners pretending to be dead in front of a grave on the ground complete with headstone. One of my biggest race regrets was not stopping for this photo op. Luckily, I was able to do it a few years later during another 5K.

I don’t know how many others of you got to experience this 5K through the Magic Kingdom, but it was definitely my favorite 5K here. Happy Halloween!

Halloween Party Ideas On The Go:

Gigi’s Cupcakes

Disclosure: I was given a Ghost Pull-Apart Cake for review purposes, however all opinions are my own.

Now while I absolutely pride myself on my baking skills, sometimes you have to give it up for the professionals and when we need to get cupcakes favorite place to go is Gigi’s Cupcakes.

Daily Gigi’s Cupcakes offers several types of delicious, gourmet cupcakes in two sizes, but during Halloween they make some truly wonderful cupcake creations!

Gigi's Cupcakes Halloween

For my gathering, I tried the Ghost Pull-Apart Cake and it was awesome! The cake was made of 24 cupcakes, and I got to choose three cupcake flavors (I chose white, strawberry, and pumpkin) and an icing (I chose my favorite frosting…Cream Cheese).

What I enjoyed most about the Ghost Pull-Apart Cake was that it was really convenient for my littlest guests to grab a cupcake, and I didn’t have to have an extra serving utensil to clean at the end of the party.

If you want to grab a super quick Halloween treat for your family or as a hostess gift for a party, you can pick up a Halloween Boo Box with a dozen mini Gigi’s Cupcakes that feature your favorite Gigi’s Cupcake specially decorated for Halloween.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens … And I have Some Thoughts #TheForceAwakens

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Poster

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters in less than two months, and last night we got to finally see the third full-length trailer.

httpv://youtu.be/sGbxmsDFVnE

If you can’t stop watching the Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I’m right there with you!

First and foremost, Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer is gorgeous! However the thing that struck me the most was not just how amazing the John Williams score was, but how the seconds of the silence tripled the trailer’s impact for me.

“The Force…it’s calling you…just let it in”

While we are all stoked, I wanted to share a few thoughts that I have from watching (and re-watchting) the Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer.

I’ve also included screenshots with the time in the trailer so you can join me in my joy, bouts of screaming, tissue grabbing, or any of the other crazy emotion I had while watching!

1. Rey is someone

Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer - Rey

“I’m no one.”

If you look in the databank on the official Star Wars site, Rey has the following description…

Rey is a resilient survivor, a scavenger toughened by a lifetime of dealing with the cutthroats of the harsh desert world of Jakku.

That’s. It.

Now you and I both know that’s not ‘it’, and these trailers are doing a great job at giving us a peek at what she could be all about.

2. Han Solo’s Role

Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer - Han Solo

“It’s true…all of it.”

It seems as if Han Solo’s role takes a more paternal twist as he is there for Rey and Finn to help recall the times of old so that they can learn from them.

3. #WhereIsLuke

Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer - Where is Luke

ONE SECOND? YOU’RE ONLY GOING TO GIVE ME ONE SECOND AGAIN?

Sorry…I’m still not okay with this…

4. Kylo Ren’s Darth Vader Worship

Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer - Kylo Ren Darth Vader

“I will finish…what you started.”

Kylo Ren having the remains of Darth Vader’s helmet on display really seals his creepy, completionist role in my mind.

I seriously can’t wait to hate Kylo Ren!

5. THE EMBRACE

Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer - Han and Leia embrace

Yes, yes I gasped and cried…and then I yelled…

WHY IS LEIA SAD?

DOES SHE STILL LOVE HAN? DOES HE STILL LOVE HER?

WHERE IS LUKE? (Please see my outrage in #3)

6. Finn’s Lightsaber

Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer - Finn Lightsaber

“I was raised to do one thing…but I’ve got nothing to fight for.”

We all, by now, know that isn’t true.

Finn has a lot to fight for, but this time we get to see him wield his lightsaber against Kylo Ren.

All. The. Goosebumps.

7. Nostalgia

Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer - Nostalgia

The Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer is full of nostalgia and moments where you feel like you may have seen this all before, but it is done in such a wonderful way that you can’t help but want more!

So what do you think? What was your biggest takeaway from the latest Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer?

Man the next 58 days are going to be painful…maybe I’ll just watch the trailer one more time…

Plancha, open to the public daily 11am – 6pm, is an all-day dining restaurant featuring a Cuban-American Cuisine, Signature Cocktails, and wide variety of Cigars.

The Plancha dining room is intimate and filled with a laid-back elegance, that would be a perfect way to cap off an afternoon of golf or lunch with friends.

Chef Pedro Sanchez and his team have created a vibrant, fresh, and authentic menu that brings a taste of Cuba to Orlando.

At Plancha, Sanchez combines his experience, love for food and natural cooking ability with recipes that he learned from his grandmother, who is originally from Cuba. “I grew up in Puerto Rico but we had Cuban restaurants on every street. Puerto Rican food and Cuban food are very similar, but Cuban food uses different spices,” he says.  Dishes like the black bean soup and the mojo chicken, favourites on the menu at Plancha, are recipes that he learned from his mother. “My goal is to cook from the heart and serve dishes guests can make at home, but presented in an upscale and innovative way.”

We started with a few beverages from the full-service bar that offers signature cocktails, beer, and wine.
